I bought a cordless portable power washer…it washes siding, cars, etc. i loaded it up with Dawn and hot water and powered the wasp nest at 11 p.m.. It LOOKED annihilated, but there are still wasps (plural) there a day or two later. Since they are so highly proprietary…I ask… Where does a wasp go at night?
Hey, did you start putting them up in the spring? And where did you put them? I have a small attic apartment and I wouldn't know where to place it next year (there is a real one this year somewhere more far from me but there still alte many wasps in front of my window and some found a way into my apartment :(
I put one in my shed 2 years ago. No hornets, wasps or bees in there. You need to Wrinkle up the bags good first. If you can, paint the bag grey. Mine wasn't painted and I placed it attached to a solid rafter inside my shed using Zip ties or tie-wire. No string.
I have wasps and hornets of different species nest right next to each other. I have been nests and bird houses next to each other. They all coexist. The paper bag is kind of like the penny in a Ziploc bag. People think it works, but it doesn't
It won’t work if it looks like a paper bag. You need to scrunch up the bag to get it wrinkly. Put a couple handfuls of rocks or gravel. Fill with packing peanuts, air pillows, bubble wrap - whatever you have to keep a full round shape in the middle. The gravel will keep it from blowing so it looks realistic to a hornet’s nest.
I put a couple around my house and hung one right above my back door. Have had issues with carpenter bees for years, they eat my pergola. Since I hung the bags up I hardly see them. If a wasp does come by they don’t stay. I think it’s even helped with flies. I have a horse who lives behind me so flies have been an issue. I crinkled mine up stuffed with plastic and nailed them up against the house. I do believe they work pretty good.
I've got carpenter bees, wasps, and hornets all nesting in the same chicken coop. On my house I have 2 species of hornets building nests 3 feet apart in another spot the carpenter bees hang out. Maybe my stinging insects just get along.
@@FastGardeningMichigan I’d be getting rid of those bad girls. The bags seem to be working. I see the carpenter bees but not so much and the wasp don’t hang around. Plus I seem to have less flies trying to get in my house.
I was very skeptical but put one up about a month ago. It took a couple of days, but now I am seeing no carpenter bees. Maybe you could make it where it doesn't swing and look more realistic.
I'm still skeptical. The fact is these bees are super abundant in April/may and can drill many many holes in a day it only takes them a cpl minutes actually. Anyway, the adults die off by July leaving the next generation to hibernate and start the cycle over. I suspect by the time ppl get around to putting up a bag and wait a cpl days or a week the bees are simply done doing what they were doing and moved on or died. I have seen way way too many of these household and garden remedies simply not work yet ppl convince themselves they do various ways. Given how bees see different and use site different and given a wasp nest doesn't sway and flutter in the Breeze and generally has wasps around it I'd say the carpenter bees are not this easily fooled sorry
@@FastGardeningMichigan has to be fastened so it doesn't move. Same thing happened to me has it on a string more bees came soon as I fastened it then it worked alot better. Only worked on wasps for me
If the goal is to keep bees away, you are right..they will continue to fly around they are still trying to scope stuff out. However, if you want to make sure they don't build a nest, they do work. I would suggest NOT letting the bags sway/dangle in the wind, though. I have a brown plastic bag hanging inside the roof of my (somewhat open) garage (i.e. minimal wind). Not only have we not seen a wasp nest in years in the garage itself, but not even on the detached house (100ft away).
I have so many different types of bees, wasps, and hornets that they live in harmony. Paper wasps made a nest by the bag and so did some other type. I have yellow jackets and carpenter bees with nests less than 10 feet apart now
What a shame it didn't work for you. I put one up 5 years ago in a location that without fail wasp build nest every year for 15 years but since then I have had zero nest built. Usually a wasp will swing bye and do a big ol' NOPE and fly away. I've only seen two even think it might be a good place to build a home.
Your paper bag tied up with a string, looks just like a paper bag tied up with a string! The concept works. I know because a hornet started to build a nest and I destroyed the hornet before it was finished. However I have not seen a carpenter bee sense then. ( I did not remove the nest)
Someone said to boil orange peels and I threw in Italian spices. ( not a cook) lol that held me until I get the bags up. Thank you so much finally a summer we wont be running from bees. Lol
It's worked for me - I've used purchased decoys (more on the blue grey side) and a brown paper bag, which I crushed into the nest shape (for a little texture) and hung it up so it didn't move - it kept wasps and hornets off the balcony most of the summer - did nothing for paper wasps but they don't sting ? IDK
Someone below commented that they can't already have established nests for it to work. It is a deterrent to them building a nest there. Makes sense. If they are already established, they will still be around.
I disagree with any sort of dummy "nest". We forget that these creatures communicate with pheromones, not sight. Same reason a little bit of smoke allows us to tear apart a honeybee nest without attack. I was going to recreate this video using a real best but they're so expensive. I figured the results would be the same. Doesn't work. Those that say it works go into the experiment wanting it to work so they manufacture the results in their head
You did not make the bag look anything like a REAL hornet's nest! Need to fold in the top as best you can, and make it look more like a hole where hornets can enter / leave. Also, you need some sort of weight (e.g. - maybe small rocks) in the bottom of the bag, to help keep it from swinging in the wind (or maybe attach it to the house so it doesn't swing around). You also need to scrunch the bag-up more, so it truly looks more like a hornet's nest. Hornet's nests are quite irregular looking. My friend has used the bag trick for years, and no longer has a carpenter bee issue. He puts a bag under the back porch, and on the front porch! Good luck, and thanks for the video!
I hope to recreate this in the future with a real nest. I am a firm believer this doesn't work. They communicate by pheromones, not sight. I watch various stinging insects interact and nest near each other without issue. Could a real best work? Maybe. A paper bag, no matter what you do, I do not believe so. There are still some that believe a penny in a bag full of water will repel flies.
Yes, they do work. But you have to put them up to look like a natural nest like in the corner of the soffits/wall of the house. May I suggest some carpenter bee traps. Can find plenty of videos on RUclips for those...
They communicate by scent so a floating paper bag or a hornet nest with no occupants looks the same to them. Unless you are hiring hornets to patrol the paper bag it isn't keeping any others away
I had a balcony and it’s the playground of carpenter bees, yellow jackets, regular bees, and so on…not sure what else can work. But the bag thing doesn't work for me as well!
Ugh, I think you are supposed to shape the bag and wrinkle it up so that it looks like a wasp nest. You are also supposed to shape and trim the top so that it looks round and finished. Also, put some stones in the bag so that it is weighted a bit. This guy did nothing but hang a paper bag on a string and he did nothing to even attempt to make it look like a wasp nest. Bad experiment. This guy gets an F and an F- for effort.
I am sure their giant insect brains would notice a rounder shape and rocks in it. If there arent any hornets in it its just paper. A google search shows that studies on the effectiveness of this method prove it false, similar to a clear bag with pennies in it to keep away flies.
