- Art21 proudly presents an artist segment, featuring David Goldblatt, from the "Johannesburg" episode in the ninth season of the "Art in the Twenty-First Century" series.
Considered the dean of South African photography, David Goldblatt’s near-six-decade-long career chronicled and critiqued the country’s tumultuous modern history. Interspersed with scenes of Goldblatt touring the sites of past and current photographs, this segment surveys the artist’s extensive body of work; his earliest projects captured the desperate lives of African gold miners and critically probed white Afrikaner privilege and his more recent series examined the country’s changing politics through the evolution of its architectural structures. Goldblatt’s work is a testament to the power of photography as a means of social criticism. This segment was filmed and edited in the months prior to Goldblatt’s passing in June 2018.

To me, David Goldblatt is the greatest photographer of all time. I can't think of another artists who could depict both sides of a social situation like him.

Excellent video. Goldblatt was a thoughtful, sensitive, intelligent, caring, real photographer. He was not one of today’s so-called “street photographers” who simply use the term street photography as an excuse and justification for lack of thoughtfulness, competence, and excellence.
I thank to Amara web, I get to know this strong soul from the Amara volunteering project. The more I listen anda watch this video to translate it subtitle into Indonesia, the more it hit me right in ma heart, about his consistence and struggle in photography. This video is beautifully touching me.

Probably that he grew up during apartheid, and even now, some 30 years after the system was abolished, there are massive differences in quality of life
