I agree. But also they are probably used to it by now. Also it's Ariel's band. They are not famous and so they got paid and they are just doing their job. But if they step out of line, they out of the band.
So crazy cuz I grew up with Ariel and went to grade school with him. He was always such a nice, cool guy. I only found out he was doing music and was "famous" like a few months ago. Not many people know this but he's an incredible artist. He used to draw these incredible cartoons back in the day.
background to this: ariel pink was upset for a number of things, mainly how coachella was accommodating him and his entourage i think. he tried ending the set early but when he tried leaving off stage he was confronted and told he had to keep playing. His ex-gf, geneva jacuzzi, also berated him to continue. When he went back up to the stage he refused to sing any of the songs.
This audience is not aware of what they are listening too, they were just there. Ariel Pink did a great job - he hired an awesome band. They played the song great and did their part as they should have. I like this version of the song
they are amazing anyway!!! i've seen them in barcelona and they were incredible!! nightime... and everybody was into it, half of the pretty huge crowed knew the lyrics ... we were singing .. we had a great great time ... and so did they! thank you guys!!!
i think it was cool to let the band get shine even if that wasnt the intention at least the rest of the band got to look like they wrote a song without the lead singer which is fortifying.
I thought it sounded cool. If anyone, it only made Ariel look bad. You could almost pass it off as "performance art" if Ariel wanted to lie and pretend it was purposeful.
I took a writing class with this cat once many years back and we have mutual creative acquaintances who in form or another have elevated from the masses. Good on him for doing his thing. Sorry the brutha had a bad day though.
What a memory! I remember he was arguing with the sound guy from the beginning. He sang like one song then quit until the end. 2011 was also the peak Kanye performance as well as Caifanes from Mexico. What a great year!
You got that right! PERFECT opportunity....to sing Fright Night, whenever YOU want to...From: Ariel (Die hard fans should be thanking him for this!) lol.
I love this video. He is obviously high or exhausted. He is not even being egotistical. He's bobbing his head, trying. He just can't get past whatever is distressing. The band looks ridiculous only because its such an authentic human moment.
annenyctheoriginal I think all the members other than the drummer still play with him though. Theyr'e all there for the KEXP session he did a couple months ago anyway.
hey Ariel, if you're reading this, watching this makes me love you more. Only as a human though, because I'm married to my own funny Cancer guy. No one could compete with Geneva anyway. It's so obvious that she's the only one for you it practically leaks off of you in your interviews. I'm sure she feels the same, just too proud to admit it. It's sad though, sometimes love doesn't turn out the way you want it to. Me and Eric hate each other most of the time. We scream obscenities and threaten and belittle. I guess because we haven't been able to learn to love each other in a regular boring way. Anyway, thanks for reminding me why he's so special. Only love could tear you up like that. Neil Young thinks so too, hey!
'Pink’s draughtsman skills got him into Cal Arts, but he soon switched his focus to music. Fellow student and early Haunted Graffiti member Tim Koh recalls often seeing him at a record store he worked at in 1996: “He always wore these red clogs and a sweatshirt with no shirt underneath-he just looked like a weird guy.” -Andy Beta/Pitchfork
@1111dolldolldoll1111 Yeah, I'm aware that the name, Haunted Graffiti is his and he had it long before this current band, as well as getting more exposure. I found out about Ariel about 5 years ago and I admire his DIY home recording roots.
2:56 Hipster kids. This is why you never go to music festivals. You will always find the same kind of people who only go to see Ariel because he's one of the smaller artists, and only the "cool fans" go there. Go to scheduled venues where you can only expect fans to be there.
Not my cup of tea to be honest...but I'm happy to see that he's so successful and has such a loyal following. Weird for me to see that he's so "quirky" now because I remember him as being such a "normal" guy.
I like to think this was the very moment Ariel realized he officially jumped the shark. You see Ariel had built his entire career, his aesthetic if you will, after making fun of (while also paying tribute to) the shitty synth pop of the 70's and 80's. His whole gimmick was to playfully mock what was once considered to be bland, commercial, and not particular sonically impressive music. He was having a laugh, ironically playing the music of his childhood most condemned, but slowly becoming more acceptable as a format. Cut to 2010, after years of being a lo-fi hero, endlessly committing to non-releases and various bootleg sounding albums that were even too underground and obscure for the over saturated indie-verse, 'Round and Round' hits, sounding like a lost Todd Rundgren relic. All of a sudden, a mainstream audience and the indie blogosphere embraced Ariel, and soon his sound became commercial, the very thing he once playfully mocked. Therefore Ariel become obsolete, he became the very thing he rallied against. His music became obsolete, no longer having the same meaning if popular to a whole new generation who never would have been into lo-fi beforehand. The people he's playing for in this audience are not in on the joke, they were just there for a festival. In my mind, this was the moment Ariel realized his music was never going to be the same. He still might be playing the same stuff, but once popularity hit, it completely defeated the purpose of the lo-fi aesthetic. That's at least my take anyway. Then again, he could have just been really high ;)
+RockofAgez I thought it was this: "Upset with the levels onstage, Ariel Pink seemed furious and refused to sing. The band battled on, playing a number of tracks, but the American singer stuck resolutely to his stance."
Ariel Pink has been soundtracking my life for quite a while now.
It's like in Guitar Hero when your controller battery dies

His band is class man...to keep rocking on without him, without flashing dirty looks or awkward laughs; shows really good integrity on their part.
@Topher as was I - just excellent!
Or they are just used to his weirdness lol
Shut up
For real. Totally class "A" professionals.
Ariel Pink's music sounded better without him. Lol.

Lol I'd leave if bo one would be the sponsor, but five gum? Who cares really.
