I think the liberal "Reckoning" serves the same function as terror did in "The War on Terror." It's a vague thing that you can't pin down, so you can't ever say it's finished. So if we can't really fix things like inequality or health and education disparities until everyone has "owned their own racism," then we never have to fix these things at all. Instead of concrete goals, our politics will be focused on an unmeasurable changing of hearts
I don't see why it must be an either or situation, it's fully reasonable to address current issues, and also to seek the redress of past indignities. History is not a vacuum. The causes of today's problems are firmly rooted in that past.
Taking down racist confederate statues is not historical nihilism. The history of those men is still in old fashioned books, e-books, film documentaries and movies.
No, "historical nihilism" here is meant as the opposite of "historical materialism", eg, tearing down a statue and saying, "Aren't you satisfied now?? Why do you keep bitching and moaning about changing concrete material conditions?! Breaking up the big banks or passing Medicare for All won't end racism!"
It seems to be that the sort of Whig history you're talking about here is pretty integral to Liberalism, and that its decline in popularity amongst those who we generally call liberals is a sign that the less extreme right, those who are overtly blood and soil types, is moving, or has moved to, to some sort of new ideological formation within Capitalism.
Yeah this is the current trend and there's gotta be more expansive or specific ways to address the limits of this discourse. How tho? Try harder to communicate economic inequality / injustice? Trash the billionaire space race (which is admittedly fun to do) or what?
Seriously, it fascinates me what liberals imagine the future to be, because in my mind the future has been effectively foreclosed, and I think we all share this to some degree (my god how could you not -- well that is indeed the question lol). Like I'm sorry but if the "future" is just... _this_ ...but over time necessarily, as all autonomy has been abdicated to market forces, _worse_ ...why is that preferable even in a narrow selfish sense...?? Like what are we doing here gd ittttttttt lol... I feel like there's a mode of perpetual reaction that one can easily get sucked into. Don Young Agreed. Those statues aren't about "history."
