Restoration of a Military Watch - British Army G10 - Fail!

  • In this restoration of a Military Watch not everything goes to plan! This British Army quartz watch by CWC came to me with a dead movement and glass so scratched that it looks frosted. In the video I restore that watch and have a cunning plan to make it look super special once it is working but then things start to go wrong.
    In this video I also explain the numbering system that is printed on the back of all british military watches.
    I do not do much talking in this video leaving, for the most part, the action on screen to tell the story.

    Superb, entertaining and instructive. So pleased to see my Royal Navy G10 also have a walk-on part in the film! As for the strap, Silvermans sell a canvas NATO where the eyelets are stitched not riveted. They say it is a snug fit but that it will fit although I haven’t bought one yet. I assume the stitch reinforcement is just a little more forgiving than metal eyelets.

    Wow Richard! What a beautiful field watch! I think the camo kaki NATO strap it came in was also beautiful. I was worried about the second hand position, until you blow it in the right place ;-)
    ETA quartz movements are precise and it is a pleasure to see the second hand stopping for a second right over the second/minute mark. One question: this watch dial has no date window, so you've taken off the date wheel and the related setting wheel, I guess this movement has also a "quick set" date with the crown in first position, how do you handle the "ghost" date position of the crown, it will be possible to also fix it in order to let the crown "jump over" it in some way? Thank you for sharing this beautiful video, I'm slowly opening my mind about quar(t)z watches, this one is gorgeous! Sorry for my poor English, I hope you'll understand my question.

    Being a Pulsar collector I am trying to get at a decent non "pull my pants down" priced Pulsar G10 and the RAF chrono issue for my collection as I do have a standard "civilian" version of the Pulsar G10 and have civilian themes of Pulsar's dancing hands models V601 and V691 but the civvy versions just have standard casebacks. I remember the war of ego's at Woolwich where the RSM hated quartz and expected one to have a damned good automatic and the adjutant who hated mechanicals and expected one to have a bally good quartz and none of this soppy NATO straps either, you bought from the barracks store a brown or black leather cuff strap which had a pop down hood to cover the head and offer no shine.

    Hello, a very informative video. I previously thought tension ring, armoured, acrylic crystals needed a press to remove/replace but your crystal lifter worked very well - even though the Bergeon No 4266 is advertised as suitable for crystals without tension ring. How did you judge that it was appropriate to used the lifter rather than the press? Is it the fact that it is acrylic rather than glass? I would like to do the identical job on my CWC G10 so need to understand which tool to buy. Many thanks.

      Hi Brian you are wise to ask as there was some pressing done off camera. In fact the press is maybe more helpful than the grab.. I would invest in a press and then buy a few different sizes of crystal as they are quite cheap. Then press home the largest that you can. Hope this helps. Richard

Mangled, could be an idear for a video explaining what's involved in getting a bracelet to fit the lugholes and case properly.

    I’ve had two of these watches, for what you have to pay to acquire one there are much better choices. The crystal scratches easily, with little to no water resistance.

    Excellent video Richard! I have my father's "fatboy" version G10 that has a faulty movement. What replacement movement do you recommend for this one as I understand that the 955.112 doesn't work for due to the stem height? The original 536.121 movement is impossible to get hold of. Your recommendation would be much appreciated!! I have liked all your videos!! 🤣

    Hi Richard. You’ve inspired to restore one myself. Just one quick question, why don’t you use a press to put on the crystal? Thanks in regard

    • @richardperrettwatchmaker
      @richardperrettwatchmaker  Год назад +1

      Hi benc80906 ... this 'crystal' in these watches is actually acrylic and designed to flex. This flex is utilised by the 'crystal' grab to shrink the diameter of the arcylic and slot it into place before releasing it where it gribs the case due to the outward pressure exerted by the springy acrylic. A crystal press would push onto a piece of acrylic too large to go into the case and quite quickly break it. Hope this explains. Richard

    A bit disappointed by not seeing a mechanical movement.
    Regarding the strap is it possible to remove both pins from the lugs and place back once the Nato strap has been positioned to its ideal place? This way avoiding bottle neck when it comes to metal rings!
