Prozelten Castle - Henneburg (Stadtprozelten)

Due to renovation the castle is still closed
I will vist the castle againo once it is reopened.
The vaest ruins of Prozelten Castle (Henneburg) are situated on the southern
edge of the Spessart mountain range on a sandstone foothill of Kühlberg mountain. A 70 metre deep valley cut between Stadtprozelten and Henneburg protects the castle‘s
west flank. The castle is protected towards the north by a
moat, the Kühlberg descends steeply towards the Main river to the south-east. Henneburg is one of the largest castle ruins in Bavaria: the Schenken von Klingenberg family built
the Burg Prozelten as a border fortification around 1200. It
was the residence of the Teutonic Order for almost 200 years
and last served as the official residence of the noble Mainz
Amtskeller officials. It was deserted in the 16th century and
fell into disrepair over time. The castle grounds are broken
down into the upper castle, consisting of a fortification and
main castle, as well as the outdoor grounds with moat and
rampart and the defensive wall on the Main river side. The
fortifications surrounding the upper castle, several castle
gates, seven wall towers or their remains, both Great Hall
ruins, the large and small keep and the roughly 150 metre long underground wall-walk accessible through exits in
the wall towers, which links the south-west gateway to the
northern part of the castle remain intact

Went there the first time back in 1979, visited it off and on till 1982, then when we came back to Germany in 1998 I took my son and his friends there in 2001 just before Halloween and it was great.

The renovation of the castle is finished. You can go inside again.

Leider nein. Laut Plan sollte die Burg im letzten Jahr fertig werden und diesen Sommer die Gatronomie öffnen aber was läuft schon nach Plan.

Seit 5 Juni ist sie wieder begehbar ,Wehrgang und Bergfried sollen auch demnächst wieder frei zugänglich sein
