Thanks to the questions by viewers, I have learned a bit more about breakout rooms. First, Blackboard has temporarily disabled the timer function to deal with the excess load from all the schools going online. Hopefully, it will be back soon. Second, I found out you upload all the files you want to share, then share them with the breakout groups either individually or all of them. So, you can have a screen with a problem or discussion questions for each group, or different files for each group. All you have to do is click on the three little dots next to the file name once it is uploaded (You do have to create the breakout groups first though) I might make a little video about that later on.
Hi Sharon, great video! I'm curious what you used to create this video? I'd like to be able to record something similar for my students. I like how you are captured in the video circle while taking us through your screen.
Hi Carly! I’m glad you like the video! I don’t recall the name of that particular program because they changed the way it worked and I couldn’t use it any more. I’m using screencast-o-matic now which does the same but with a square instead of a circle.
Thanks very much for this video. Fabulous names ! it took me a few moments to click ! Sorry to ask an elementary question, but how do you get your picture in the circle in the corner ? - I think that's a really nice delivery mode. thanks
Hi Rosemary! That was actually from the screen capture program I was using at that time. Since then they have changed the program and I can’t use it anymore.
Hi Sharon. Thanks for the amazing video. I do have a question. Can you have something posted in the breakout rooms? Could I use a different question in each breakout room? Phyllis
Hi Phyllis! Yes you can! You have two options. If you want everyone to see the same thing, you can upload a file in the main room, and next to the file name, click on the three dots. You'll see an option to share it with groups. Alternately, if you want each room to have something different, You can upload several different files and choose to share it each one with a different group. You can also just go into each group and share the file then go to the next group and so on.
Can you do this prior to everyone joining the group or do you have to do this once everyone is already in the main session? I'd prefer to set these groups up beforehand.
I did a little test with my Virtual Office. I created the breakout rooms/groups and and left my office. When I came back in, they were still there. Of course you won't be able to assign students to those rooms until they come into the session, so you would have to move them from them main room to the break out rooms. You would save a bit of time if you went in and created the rooms and shared any content that should be in those rooms beforehand, but actual movement of students to the rooms would be about the same. Just think of what it's like in the traditional classroom when you tell the students to get together in groups...it takes a minute to get everyone settled in before they go to work, not to mention getting latecomers into their place. Let me know how it goes!
Hi Sharon thanks for the video. Do you know if I could invite a student or another person into the virtual session if they are not registered within the module? Our virtual learning environment in brightspace and we structure it around modules.
Hi Saoirse! Yes, you can send the guest link to anyone regardless of if they are registered in the course/module or not. You can find the guest link in the settings for the session you created or you can click on the three little dots next to the title and get it there . I hope I answered your question, if not, feel free to write again.
Hi! Thank you for this video! Quick question ...if I am sharing my screen with a problem set in the main room, can students still see that screen when we go into Breakout rooms?
Hi Sarah! Originally I sent a reply that you can't, but YOU CAN! Set up the break out rooms first, then upload the file in the share file option. Once the file is uploaded, click on the three dots next to it and it will offer you the option to share with groups.
No, I don't think so. When you create a group using the group function, a videoconferencing room is created for the group to work in, but it is not the same as breakout rooms. The breakout rooms are kind of a room within a room. That's an interesting idea though!
Hi Rowena! There is a timer....aaaaand there's not. Blackboard has disabled this function to help deal with the unexpected load from so many schools going online. You can read about other functions they gave disabled here: blackboard.secure.force.com/apex/publickbarticleview?id=kAA1O000000Kz2B&homepage=true
@@craigmachado6408 Hi Craig! Yes you can! When you select the breakout room option, at the very top you can choose from a drop down menu to randomly assign students and how many rooms you want. Then Collaborate will create the rooms and assign the students. I hope I answered your question!

Thank you. I was stumped on sharing files to groups; now I know to do so after opening groups.
You are welcome, John! Let me know if I can help with anything else.
Thank you. Very helpful. Far more useful than Blackboard Inc's videos.
