- Raphael Saadiq is one of the great R&B writers and producers of the last 30 years. He started out fronting and playing bass in the group Tony! Toni! Toné! with his brother D’Wayne Wiggins on guitar. The Tony’s had an amazing four album run from ‘88 through 1996 with hit singles like "It Never Rains (In Southern California)," "Feels Good," "Anniversary," and "If I Had No Loot."
Raphael’s also released five solo albums starting with 2002’s Instant Vintage. His most recent album, Jimmy Lee, is a collection of very personal songs about the real traumas he and his family experienced growing up in Oakland, CA.
Raphael’s also done some amazing work behind the board. He’s produced and written for the likes of D’Angelo, TLC, Mary J. Blige, Solange, Earth Wind and Fire and just recently he worked on a handful of songs on Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter. He’s also earned an Academy Award nomination for his work as a film composer.
This week Justin Richmond talks with Raphael Saadiq from his studio in Los Angeles about some of the incredible work he’s done recently. Raphael breaks down his collaboration with D’Angelo on the classic track “Lady,” and how Sly Stone bassist Larry Graham influenced a generation of musicians coming up in the Bay Area.

ABOUT BROKEN RECORD
For generations of music lovers, the liner notes on albums were a central part of the way music was heard. You bought an album and it came with an accompanying narrative: a digression, an aside, a backstory-maybe even an invented history. We intuitively understood that great music required not just listening but conversation between the artist and the audience and the audience and the rest of the world.
Broken Record is a podcast that restarts those conversations-in a world without liner notes-for a new audience of music lovers.
Broken Record is hosted by Justin Richmond with interviews by producer Rick Rubin, writer Malcolm Gladwell, and former New York Times editor Bruce Headlam.

Sorry for the lack of research but my impulsivity has gotten the best of me. I have been of fan of podcast/interview type vibes for 10+ years, anywho (whooo whooo whooo, sorry) this interviewer!!!!!!!! If he had a podcast where he just interviews people he like I watch every episode, his genuine reaction and nature to questions were just innate and REAL. His knowledge, his letting space for the questions to breathe, his research, his respect for Mr. Saadiq and his expansive discovery (both recorded AND live?!?!?!? ) normally not a commenter but I had to mention it let it be a testament to your impeccable prowess within the genre my friend.
I really enjoyed him. He understands music and musicians. He asked the right questions.
He’s been around and has interviewed plenty of legendary people! Check em out!
Yes he dope.
He's impeccable. I critique a lot of host and interviewers and he has to have one of the best etiquettes.
I truly agree, I seen about three good interviews/conversations where I can vibe that Ray was comfortable and opening up. One is the Mad Hatta interview from Houston, TX, this one Sway interview it was about an hour & Half, and this one with Justin. I want to start a podcast I would talk to guest about their music, movies, and etc and know their work and do full research to ask better questions.
Lucy Pearl still my favorite modern soul recording...
I think that people should give Saadiq more respect.
I agree, though he doesn't need "it" (outside validation, accolades, or whatever we call it these days) when he has people like you and I sharing and loving his music. Most importantly, you can see that he loves himself and that's the greatest gift that we can have independently. Many don't even know the magic that comes from just taking the breeze in or looking at the Moon. There's more to Life than politics and G wagons, though we already know that. Keep shining. You're right though Saadiq is a legend, inspiration, artist, and a prime example of what it means to be a Human Being here on Earth.
Those who matter know how amazing he is . I doubt if he desires that Taylor Swift type of fame . He might but I don't get that energy from him . Those who are unaware of him are seriously missing out on many levels . 😎🎭✌️
@@pendulumdistinction2494YOU really touch me with him being a Good Human being.
You get what you give. Go ask dawn from Vogue his former group mate for Lucy pearl project
Agreed. He’s brilliant. We ALL have listened to music he has composed with AWE. Just the MIND of an anointed musician who is blessed to be imbued with a song(s) that touch(es) and soothes your brain indelibly is ever FASCINATING. And to hear that one of his biggest and original influences were and are the Hawkins music!! Man!! Walter’s and Edwin’s songs, the chords are so complicatedly yet simplicately brilliant that they LIVE FOREVER! Sigh. Signed, a FAN♥️
Argue with ya mother but Raphael Saddiq is the closet thing to Prince he’s in the same lane no comparison just there style and love for music
Also Stokley Wms. of MC band, that Minneapolis sound🎙🎼🎭
Stumbled across a clip on Twitter and ran to find the full interview! Great interview! Your enthusiasm and respect for Raphael and his craft was very entertaining to watch!! I’ll definitely be watching more.
Hes kinda soft spoken. Has aged well
Yes. Hard to believe he's 58. He does have a humble, and mild spirit.
this is the perfect interview!!!!! I mean Raphael is a true legend and such a down to earth dude. but this was the perfect exchange, really natural and a joy to hear. PROPS!
Y'all seriously should do a part two of this! I did not want this conversation to end!
At the Orpheum Theater in Memphis!! My wife and I were on the front row!!
We jammed my brother! Let's do it again in 2025! Your drummer was very unique! I play drums and I have never seen a drummer playing drums like that! Thanks for taking the phones too!!
Brian
Memphis, TN
pianist here. dope that he's taking piano lessons.
I think that’s dope too. He can probably play the basics with 7ths, diminished and augs, but seems like he’s digging deeper.
Make that CeeLo Green colabo happen bro..
🙏
Great interview. Mr. Saadiq was very open. The interviewer did an excellent job.
Yeah, that hidden track with Larry Graham, I remember that so well. I had to tell my musical friends about it because they did not realize it was there. I myself must have been doing errands or something and for got to end whatever format I was using at that time when I first heard it and then bam, I was like, "what is this?" "hold up, is that who I think it is? the one and only?" Man, if that had been put out in a previous time period where that music was so much more appreciated....!!!
The reason why Rapheal & D'Angelo have so much in common musically is because they both come from similar Black Church Cultures💯 You can go to any Black Church & hear this universal Black Sound💯
Raphael mentioned the multi talented Don Was...who also is a great bass player.
We have a multi-part series coming next month with Don Was as co-host. Stay tuned!
@@BrokenRecordPodcast... looking forward to it! 😄
I need to do my homework on the Hawkins Family! ASAP! And Grand Central Station!
Enjoy! open.spotify.com/playlist/6HT4LzavbFkMo3a7LXtoJQ?si=42ad1ecc48434366
Do not pass go on BOTH. For Hawkins, listen to ‘What is This,’ (live) and ‘My Gratitude,’ and ‘I’m Going Away,” and Tramaine Hawkins ‘ Medley’ from her live album first, my personal favs. In terms of Graham Central, of course, ‘The Jam,’ and ‘I Can’t Stand the Rain.’ I know: who asked me, LOL!
My favorite Tony Toni Tone song is Born Not to Know from 1988 WHO? Album
Been listening to Raphael all last week at work - Ray Ray, The Way I See It and Stone Rollin'. Really love 'I want you back' w/ Teedra Moses. Then 'Cranes in the Sky' popped on randomly. Just...I appreciate this man so much.
So have I! "Rifle Love" was on repeat ALL last week! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Man, great interview. Thanks for sharing. 🙏🏼🙏🏼
I'm just now realizing Raphael Saadiq Cut The Dreads off once again, He looks good with the low fade though.
Wondering when Raphael Saddiq and Toni,Tony,Tone are gonna get their flowers from the industry…It’s WAY overdue…For real though
That was dope… ✌🏾💚
I’m a writer, and people like Saadiq really inspire me to study my craft. This man is a gem forreal!
100%
Gratitude
This is an absolute gift for reasons beyond the obvious. Thank you for an incredible journey to what it means to be a human being and follow our natural instincts for the sake of just being ourselves. Evolution at its finest. Keep shining!
I was in the front section for the Memphis show! Amazing atmosphere and positive energy! Really wish the group would sell the video!
This was a good interview because it went so many directionx
I'm gettng the feeling that Justin enjoyed this interview a lot! Fantastic stories and background.
I bet he did
RSQ is a legend indefinitely for him to act so humble you wouldn’t know 👏
One of my favs! Awesome convo!
I really enjoyed that, thank you so much. Raphael always has so many stories.
Love Saadiq. But seeing him up close here is amazing. He’s more beautiful than I imagined. Love when artist keep themselves in good spirits and condition. Excellent!
I’m still waiting for the songs with Chaka Khan to come out.
Def jam Vendetta
Great game
A TRUE LEGEND for real! Raphael Saadiq is way too slept on in the industry. HIs musical imagination is way outside the box. Much love.
❤❤❤
I loved every part of that. As a musician I relate to Raphael so much. Decades of playing keys and I recently moved to guitar. It made me smile when he said he’s taking lessons, especially because he’s in his 50’s. I’m inspired. That’s the reason I’m on this app so much. INSPIRATION.
Unexpected, but great upload.
Props to the interviewer he really knows his stuff. I’ve been a fan of music and Raphael/Toni’s music have been part of the soundtrack to my life and it drives me crazy when I hear these artists being interviewed by radio people who don’t know their music history. So great interview and I can’t say enough about Saddiq all the times I went to the record stores buying his music group/solo stuff so big fan of this interview 👍🏽
I know right, I've been loving music since I was in the womb (according to my mom), I grew up on so many music my dad played, the started watching music videos around age 3 or 4. Then I started buying CD at 13 in 1995. I know my music. With the radio interviewes as you call them I yelling at the TV when they forget the songs he wrote or the lyrics to Tony Toni Tone song. I'm so glad I did hear any mention of "Deja" I'm like just watch Higher Learning movie and you will know who Deja is. This guy Justin was dope I want to see more conversations from him with others.
I was at the Memphis show of their tour (and L.A.), and Ray is correct. The vibe was SPECTACULAR!!!
I'm glad Ray included Nile Rogers, Bernard Edwards, and Tony Thompson in the tight rhythm section conversation.
Loved this casual conversation
This is a golden nugget. Fire emoji
This was a great interview. One in a million, right? 😊
There's not enough musicians creating music these days. Lots of keyboard producers and social media singers. Hearing him speak about still studying music and hus craft. But dude been dope. The great just get better.
Toni Toni Tone in the 90’s🔥I loved the directing on “Good Man” video also.. Chad Coleman and YaYa Decosta acting was amazing! Am I trippin or does Raphael and Affion Crockett look alike??
Great interview!! I hope Ray follows through with the vinyl idea.
Big Up Carlton and Familyman Barrett Raphael is absolutely right but you have to add Sly & Robbie to the short list of legendary drum and bass duos
I remember one time he had this small skinny scrawny white kid who looked more like a rock-emo kid but he straight KILLt on bass! Who was that kid?
Dream request for RS to do a song or production for: Maxwell, Lauryn Hill, Lenny Krazits, a remake of Paul Pena’s Goona Move or A Bit Of All Right or Power Of Your Love
By Rudy Ray Moore and a collab with RS and Terence Blanchard.
Yes I would love to see him work with Lauren as well, Lenny Kravitz, Willow Smith, Van Hunt, Shafiq Husayn, and The Internet.
These kinds of people are being put into a corner never to be heard from again. It is so sad how music is.Sadly, the only way for them to be recognized is by giving someone their thoughts and Dreams to get some attention. Or when they pass away. That when they realize how good OR GREAT BRILLIANT they really were. TRUE STORY.
The music game has changed. Artists are not multi-talented. They are not in the corner. They are producing for others, writing songs and working on their own craft.
That should be artists are multi-talented.
It would be a real blessing to music if Raphael & Jane Handcock would make real music together again 🙏🏿
I did a duet with Bernard on an app named Smule
we did I'm coming out he was gracious LOL
Lady is my favorite song 🎵 ❤. Thank Raphael ❤️
That’s true about reading music! I’m learning music through Duolingo 😂. It’s pretty cool.
Great interview hearing one of my producer/songwriter inspirations open up about his life and experiences.. classic!
C'mon both these guys are definitely dilla influenced and both are influenced heavily by Prince. B real!
That’s the best place to have your 1st Mango 🇹🇹
Enjoyed this conversation and stories/insights. ❤
He's talking about Keysawn Johnson😂
Great interview!
He referenced Mark King. 💪
This was a great interview!
Raphael is a beast true legend
One of the best.
I’m still looking for a performance he did with the TTT on Arsenio Hall show and he played bass on What ever you Want
My guy right here. If you ever see this Raphael, I went to Houston on Oct 29th, 2023, for the concert, and i loved the whole video stage and venue setup. Well worth the druve from San Antonio Tx. Also, I loved you performed "Couldnt Keep It To Myself" early in the set. That song should've been way bigger than I perceived. I can also tell you were feeling that jam also. Sons of Soul best TTT project personally.
Whoa, crazy good interview. Yes, bring on the vinyl. Curious about the Grateful Dead-like music too. Didn’t know this was gonna be such a good interview - Lots of things to look up and circle back to. Kept hitting pause/rewind.
True legend!!!
Awesome interview
Town Bidnizz!
Justin Richmond looking like Franco Harris reincarnated! 😮
-con : All the people’s songs Who you have had the opportunity to produce, talk about full circle ….you Did this Bro 💙🐐since #76 #KeepGoin
So far this is an amazing conversation. Justin did an amazing job and I love that he wasn't asking Ray the same repetive questions others have asked him. If I could have a conversation with Ray I definitely would bring up topics like Justin did especially talking about one of my favorite albums Stone Rollin and The Way I See It. I would have asked Ray about working on Black Men United song from Jason Lyrics Soundtrack, I just want to know how that came to be. I want to tour Raphael studio, when i lived in California, i went to Los Angeles looked up Blakesee studios and found the location. I froze i wanted to get out and go take a tour of his studio.
THERE YOU ARE!! What’s up homeboy Raphael you might not remember me, & you wasn’t at that free concert at Arroyo Park years ago with Dwayne, but at that free concert I’m the one who flashed that old black & white pic of the old band from the hood to Dwayne😂haha, the pic had Michael W. holding drumsticks, & Terrance & Dwayne & them was in it!! I’m so lol because that got Dwayne’s attention! “Ask of You”!!! Peace to you bro Raphael!☮️
I love it when real musician talk about real musicians lol, it's always respect.
Yo Raphael, where's that new Tony,Toni,Tone album you was talking about earlier this year at🤷🏿♂️???
Raphael Saadiq's deep passion for music and playing bass is what makes him one of the most, if not the most celebrated and successful musician/producer of his time.
Can’t believe that was his first time playing the Paramount Theater in Oakland . So grateful I got to experience them there. It was beautiful.
Whats the name of the song with Larry Graham? 🧐
Put on "The Answer" from the Stone Rollin' album and then wait until about 5:50 and you'll hear it. Beautiful track hidden on the record!
@@BrokenRecordPodcast so sick. Thanks 🙏🏽

I love Raphael Saadiq! So many precious Oakland memories got me smiling over here: House of Music, 94th and Cherry St (forgot Larry Grahm lived over there too), Funk on the Green, the Hawkins Family/Joel the bass player, band class at Elmhurst Middle school. So happy for your evolution all you success!
His Live at The House of Blues double CD is one of my favorites . I'm a little biased with my choice because I was in the building that night . Toni Tony Tone reunited that night on stage . Is still and will be one of my favorite most cherished experiences I've had on my time on earth . CALIFORNIA LOVE 😎🎭✌️
❤Raphael Saadiq ❤
he is starting to look like dwayne
