So bust down watches or “iced out watches,” however it is that you like to call it had been very popular for the last twenty years, or maybe better yet, maybe like 15.
However, there's been a history throughout this trend and I'm gonna go over first of how it started and where we are at right now.
So in the beginning, there was only thirty six millimeter Presidentials iced out.
These go back all the way to No Limit with Master P all the way to Birdman and the whole Cast Money Squad. That's what really started off with the bustdown watches.
So after the 36 millimeter Presis, the next phase was when people wanted the watches bigger. It went to a complete different opposite from the small 36 to these large case 48 mm Breitling Super Avengers and Franck Mullers.
Even then they have aftermarket bands, back then for those Super Avengers to make them as rocky as possible.
I'm not gonna lie, they looked pretty good in those rap videos back them. I mean, it wasn't my favorite watch in any way, shape or form, but that's when the real flooding of the watches occurred.
After that, the next trend right after that was stainless steel 42-millimeter Offshores. That's when they really started to break out and say, “Wow, wait a minute!” Now they're starting to ice out really fine watches, you know?
It was a little bit ballsy and brave at that moment to get a stainless steel AP 42, drill holes in it and ice it out.
Now, these trends go through a wave and they go getting bigger and bigger till the top of the wave, right after that, they said, “Hey,” Presidentials 41 millimeters, those are the next ones that started getting drilled out and all iced out.
Let's not forget the Yacht-Masters with their size also became a very popular watch to ice out in that time.
So now comes the part when things really started to get crazy. From there, the iced out phase started moving into the 41-millimeter AP, both chrono, non-chrono, both steel and golds.
And that's when I really started to worry and I said, “What are they gonna do next? They're gonna start busting down Pateks?”
Sure enough! Patek Nautiluses, everywhere started to get bust down. That's when it really started to get crazy in my opinion, and I think at the end it's still gonna be the height of this whole trend.
Wasn't long after that till someone finally did a Richard Mille in rose gold and then followed by one in titanium.
Now, one thing I wanna point out too is that this is what I call the “First Stage” of this whole trend because all of these watches were iced out with the traditional fashion where all the diamonds are in rows, all in rows, then comes into the flower.
Now you hear this all the time, whether they call it flower or honeycomb or whatever name they want to put it. Pretty much what happens is these diamond setters then start using a new style of setting, which is pretty much pave, where what happens is there's less metal, more diamonds.
Everything is more close together. Instead of being these rows where it used to be before, with more like symmetrical rows, they started flooding the area, with as many diamonds as possible. This Patek that I have here actually has that flower honeycomb structure.

Resell value goes down meaning if u brought a ap or rolex for example if the watch cost around 20k for example and they stop making that model in a year or two and u try re sell it to watch sellers that will increase in value around 50k to even 70k because its no longer in production but however if u iced it out drilled holes In it and paid like 5k to 10k on top basically u won't be able to get much money out of it or even 20k that u originally brought it for because they toke out the original piece parts and the only worth is the diamonds that's on it so it basically 10k so practically u bent over and fu'cked like majority of the rappers

I saw on IceBlingers some of cheap ones (i mean iced watches). And that's what can I say - if you're a teen, or uh maybe a "cool dad" it's great. I like how it shines. But to suit or something more elegant... no. Please ;)
I never got the whole iced out thing. It's like drowning amazing food in mayo, ketchup, mustard, or ranch dressing. You are no longer seeing or enjoying the essence of what you are buying in the first place...and then you are paying a crazy amount of money on top to have that pleasure taken from you. Lose-lose situation. Just wear an iced out piece of jewelry, like a necklace, a bracelet, or a ring if you feel the need for ice...but mixing watches with diamonds never made sense to me.
They're not for everyone 🤷♂️

Just because they can... Just because they ice their watch doesn’t necessarily make them less either... everyone has a different taste.
I prefer plain Jane's and the reason is because I'm around a bunch of guys that are high class guys and they all have plain Jane rolexs and the only time they will wear a diamond rolex is if rolex themselves made the rolex like that with the rolex and even they don't go too overboard with the diamond settings. Plus as a black guy people tend to profile and judge you if you have a bust down high end watch fully loaded with diamonds so I don't so bust down high end watches, I only have one rolex day date ll 41mm Arabic wave black dial which was used and I purchased it from a authorized rolex dealer for a very cheap affordable price and I get so many compliments from everyone at my job because 41mm's are discontinued and were replaced with the 40mm. That's the only rolex I own and don't plan on buying any more. But I do love those patek philippe watches along with harry Winston watches as well. When I finish paying my car off I'm going buy a patek philippe.

My two cents Eric is that diamonds and rare watches will always be admired for it's aesthetic and statements, but like with everything else (myspace and facebook) people will continue to move forward and shift towards something that appeals to them... their attention is valuable, and only genuine creativity will never let a trend die. Catch me in couple years, learning how to use Cad 3d for jewelry and I have a lot of ideas for watches and jewelry

Remember the Hublot Big Bang Impact and the Classic Fusion Aerofusion high jewellery? These were some amazing set patterns, maybe.. maybe someone will remembers them and starts using them to AP's for example. Though the cost would be sky high compared to rounds and simple baguettes, because they will have to be individually cut to fit everything else.

We are the Culture, watch makers started fully icing out there watches to keep up with the Culture (US).
Its been close to 30 years and iced out watches is like rap, its not a trend and it's aint going no where. The watch my change but the ice will always be there.
Rolex, Jacob, brietiling, hublots, gshock, FM, Patek, AP, RM and now Cartier
I ain't gonna lie I wear a gshock every day at work and on special occasions I wear my iced out watch. Family get togethers. Other times I don't like wearing it I dont want to get robbed or look like a show off around people

Iced out watches look nice and are good to wear but if you put the diamonds onto the watch such as a patek your killing the value its done
Everyone has their own taste, but I personally like them with a touch of ice. Just keep in mind that they do loose their value once iced out.. With that being said I only iced out the bezel on my Datejust Rolex just in case if I sell, I can always put the original back on..

The thing about iced out watches is that it's an eye catcher. Rolex, AP and Cartier are very nice, classic watches but they don't garner the same amount of attention as a iced out watch. Iced out watches and plain Janes are in two different categories. Nice casual classic look, plain Jane. Stand out, edginess and eye catcher, iced out. I have a classic Movado 800 series and the only time people recognize it are people who are watch guys. I also have a Joe Rodeo 16ct victory watch that shines out the gym, causing any and just about everybody to compliment and ask questions. It ultimately comes down to what you prefer. A lot of attention or classic casual look.

I thought ICED out watches looked cool when I was younger...but now I'd rather have a quality Plane Jane watch with a good movement. Some companies make poor quality watches then ice them out and people buy it for the bling factor. With the high end luxury watches if the factory doesn't add the diamonds then the watch loses resell value.

I'm a watch enthusiast. But at the end of the day, young black culture determines what's hot, what's in, what's cool, etc. and last i checked they haven't ran outta creative ideas. For those that prefer a plain jane or leaving a watch original, it's not for you to determine. These companies follow trends and fashion and hiphop culture drives that along with most other things....
