- In a lawsuit filed Thursday against Seattle University, four former and current students say the school was deceptive, promising a degree that none of the students ever received.
The students were enrolled in a doctorate program but believed they’d be able to attain a master in nursing.
“Being a graduate student was always my goal,” said Shelby Stephens, a former Seattle University graduate student. “It was years and years of preparation; I did undergrad at UC Santa Cruz to end up going to this graduate school.”
The university was the plan for Stephens, where she could get a Master of Science in Nursing. It would allow her more clout and pay.
“Seattle U is a reputable institution; I chose it for that reason,” said Stephens.
Stephens now says the university isn’t reputable and didn’t live up to its promises. She enrolled in 2019 and spent an entire year working to get her degree. With a diploma in hand, her goal was to get a nursing job in California. Then she got a phone call, “And was told by the California Board of Registered Nursing that I didn’t have a degree on my transcript.”
Unbeknownst to Stephens and her fellow students, there was a serious controversy behind the scenes over the university's advanced nursing program. The state of Washington was sending letters to the university warning that their Master is Nursing program has not been approved by the nursing commission.
“I was just desperate, when you’re in that state, you’re like well I don’t have a job, I don’t have a degree and I don’t have any way of making money,” said Stephens.

This has been brewing for a while. I hope all of the defrauded students get their money back for the worthless program they paid for. This is criminal.
Good for her!! 70,000 for a masters degree??!! This is why people are struggling to stay afloat with the weight of all their student loans!
Wow. This was actually one of the schools I was considering applying to, glad I didn’t end up going there
Me too-wow.
@@whome8444 S.U. and their nursing program has had a stellar reputation for a long time. This is really surprising and disappointing to hear.
Yeah.. sadly my mom forced me to apply to SU
UW should step up, review the now defunct program, determine what it is lacking to meet the MSM requirements and offer these students the opportunity for free to complete their MSM, and then bill Seattle University for costs incurred. A judge should facilitate this process.
They should get over a million honestly… the schools charging all these people so much so that they can go on and make lives for themselves… and now these people are stuck and traumatized badly. Seattle U should be charged a LOT for this
Oh yeah, Seattle U knows better. How do you let your program be out of compliance jeopardizing the rest of your nursing program which is tops hands down. Somebody dropped the ball.
I went to their info sessions for this program and the DNP program info sessions. Very expensive. They did not mention once their program's were not accredited. Glad I didn't go.
Wow, I could really relate to her. I know someone in nursing who went through a Master's Program. She chose the University of Washington though. I don't know much about Seattle U, but for this to happen in Seattle hurts.
So ... S.U. does not have an accredited M.S.N. program, and did not when the plaintiff enrolled, even they advertised the program. When did they inform the plaintiff? It seems like she should get more than just a consolation-prize Bachelor's in nursing for completing what they advertised. It is unclear if she already had an undergrad degree. Why does she not qualify at least for an R.N.? It is not fitting with the reputation of the school to screw up like this.
she did get her RN and her BSN but not an MSN. She already had a Bachelor's to get into the MSN program.
They showed a picture of her graduating with her undergrad from a UC school. Doesn't seem like they told her until after she was done and applying for jobs.
The complaint and public records are all posted on the law firms blog-stritmatter
(Won’t let me post a link)
It’s appalling what they did to these students.
Wow! Typical for Seattle.
Charge the students $70,000.00....then wash their hands of the issue.
The State contacts the "U" advising them of their mistake. The "U" corrects the issue and sounds like they then washed their hands of the issue. Yah I don't think these students just had $70,000.00 laying around for the "U" to keep. These students were counting on these Master Degrees. They worked hard for it. Poof! Sorry we made a mistake.....that mistake is going to cost the "U" some payback money RIGHT?
Or are there criminal activities taking place and the money is gone. I hope these students win their lawsuit. When they do they should register at UCLA for their Master Degrees.
Seattle is just getting out of control and now it's effecting students who were promised a Masters Degree. SMH!
paying for the student's loans doesn't improve anything unless the government regulate the universities charging outrages fees to obtain a degree

My school lost their accreditation in my program halfway through my time there. Several students left the university due to license requirements in their state. This taught me that you must always stay on top of accreditation policies in your state, your intended state, and university.
on the bright side, she still gets to handle bodily fluids of every color 12-14 hrs a day for the rest of her life, so... hey, you gotta love what you do, right?
nah, i would sue for my 70k, lost wages in perpetuity that the masters would have given me throughout my career, and pain and suffering for sacrificing my prime birthing years so i can't have healthy children before paying off all that debt.
Seattle U is like 13th and 14th grade of high school. Garbage.
How is it possible?
God...70,000 and only a BSN!!!! In Maryland, you can get a DNP and beyond for that kind of coin...those poor people...
Sounds like misused funds
No way did she just use clout in this interview 🤦♂️
COOOOOOLLLLLD BLOOOOOOFED.
Way too vague about the miscommunication. King5 likes to stir up strife. Not saying SU is blameless but the issue is about a masters degree as the students are getting their doctorate. The school is accredited which many watching the video would think is not.
People with a Bachelors in Nursing make very good money! I am sorry you were slighted! A cautionary tale.
This makes me glad I left
Crazy thing I actually go here 😂 anyways idk what to say bout did shit right here 🤷🏾♂️
Woooooooo America yeah! 🙄
More clout? Cringe, this is the news not TikTok.
can you explain to me what is a clout in this situation? I don't get it loool
@@iRul3TheSky1995 clout is just a slang term for attention/admiration.
@@robertb9480 Is the news media the one being clout or the students?
Masters in Nursing does carry more clout in Healthcare. They earn significantly more money. Just like having a BSN pays more than LPN or RN. More states are requiring a minimum of BSN.
@@abbylynn8872 That sounds right, but I was just commenting on the fact that a news channel is using trendy slang terms (clout in this case) and how it feels out of place.
People equating university education with employment or the guarantee of a job should Not be in college to begin with.
Did she check their accreditation before she accepted their offer? If licensing is an issue, I suppose you should check that, too. (This applies to teaching and many other careers, as well as nursing.)
Right, dumb consumers shouldn't be able to spoil scamming people for the rest of us/s
Blame the victim lol
A college can accept tuition and NOT be accredited?
EEK
Got brainwashed for 70k.
What does she mean she has no way of making money doesn’t she have a nursing degree, last time I checked you have to hold a nursing license before you get a masters in in nursing
Ask her opinion on debt forgiveness
Omg, you’re so dumb.
Republicans will protest any justice for these students.
It's the students job to double check.
It wasn't a backstreet school in the middle of the desert.
You think any student needed to check at State level? Really?
