Honestly, I don't see why a GM would publicly say he's open for business when the team is winning games, even if the play they're winning with looks bad. If there are a few problem guys, maybe you quietly shop those guys around. If you don't know who the problem guys are, maybe you call the coach in for a meeting to see if he's got a better read on it. But saying you're open for business is basically telling your team that you don't believe in them, and the only way that inspires guys to do better is out of spite.
As a lifelong rangers fan, I cannot think of another time when we've hit a wall this hard. From ECF contender level hockey to barely functional in ~15 games. Ouch...

Jets fan here so take my opinion with a grain of salt I feel like everyone is just slightly overreacting to the rangers. Sure this is a rough patch, but even the best teams will hit one every now and then. Just last year they made it to the conference final with pretty close to the same roster. They’ll get over their hump here and get back into a playoff spot. They just need to figure out what’s hindering them and work on it.

The gm destroyed the team morale and now the locker room and culture is probably broken. They had a hot start to the season and then this drama happened.
@ I’m not a NYR fan but they started 12-4-1. They have just gone 3-11 so there was a clear flip in records. I disagree that a few wins explain the 12 wins which is more than their losses.
@DeadPixel27 they did and didn't. They technically tried to speed it up by getting Trouba and signing Panarin. That's honestly where they shot themselves in the proverbial foot.
Yes, this is a superb analysis. Defense is horrendous...the team is disjointed. It is on players and coaches alike but mainly coaches for not correcting it or punishing repeat offenders (93)
This is the result of two things: 1) Sky-high expectations for a roster that’s very good, but not elite among its NHL peers. 2) A front office that’s trying too hard to leave its mark.
Great video, @hockeypsychology. You nailed it. And yes, they sure are broken. This is ALL on the players. Not the coaching staff. The players. And the players need to grow the hell up. If you want to stop playing because Chris Drury told the other 31 general managers he is willing to trade almost anyone on the team, that's only going to make you look bad, not him. They got the 2 previous coaches fired. The players claim they haven't quit on Peter Laviolette. Maybe they support him, but they still play with ZERO heart and no urgency to win whatsoever. After that loss in Nashville last night, it looks very bleak the Rangers will turn it around with a much tougher schedule ahead. Only ONE win all season against a current playoff team... ONE. That was November 19th in Toronto. The time is now. Move on from this core group that quit on the organization and start a full rebuild.
Surprised no one in the comments im seeing is blaming Peter Laviolette, he is probably the problem in the locker room. As a caps fan we are starting to hear that he is the reason Kuzy wanted out of Washington. Glad we got rid of him when we did so he didnt ruin anyone else and it has taken Carbery over a season to get us to where we are now.

Interesting analysis. Never agreed with strictly a zone defence. We were taught to play zone on D until the rush gained the blue line and depending on the play transition to one on one to the net. I guess you call that hybrid? New term to this old fossil. Hockey is a fluid game and the F3 has to be smart, on the pinch he has to cover for the D. Not be in no man's land which seemed to be the case in may of the examples you chose to show. Also pinching is always dangerous and should not be used unless it is 100% or you are behind and pushing the play. Habs fan but really liked watching Rangers last year, they were exciting. Fast paced.
Great Video. I have no idea on what went wrong. I've never seen anything like this. Is it the moving of Goodrow & Others, that are doing better with their new teams?
Can they figure it out and be competitive again like last year’s Oilers? Part of why they were so bad at the start of last season was also a switch from man-on-man to hybrid, but they figured it out and have been much better defensively ever since.
yes because when old men retire teams should be gifted the cup. This doesn't make anything worse. Ove the course of his career they were both fantastic and terrible.

When everyone gives their absolute all, all the pieces fall into place and you even got some luck on your side, yet you are still eliminated in the conference finals, what other conclusions can you draw, but that you just simply don't have what it takes to go all the way? I think it's just that simple. They proved to themselves that it's all just a futile effort unless there are major changes in the team composition.
Major concern has been that the players have chosen to point fingers to DRURY rather than their play. I don’t like my boss, so I am going to quit giving the effort necessary can never be rewarded. Players need to go from the core of experienced players that allowed this to happen. That was not Trouba, he was still giving the effort. But, paying top dollar for a third pairing defenseman, is not doable and DRURY made the right move to get out from under that contract. Coaching has been good and the decision to move to a hybrid model of zone play shows they are engaged and working to adapt to the changing NHL. It’s not DRURY, not the coaches, it wasn’t Trouba - it’s the core of Zibanejad and Kreider).
