Don’t do that recoil spring trick on an Occam Defense rifle or a Century VSKA as they both use pot metal for the action spring guides. The metal will peen on the end of the recoil spring guide, and it will have trouble fitting in the rear trunnion. A proper made AK (like this Aresenal or a IMI Galil) will work fine with this trick. Do it all the time on Galil rifles.
Yeah, I have a Yugo AK from Century. I was rather stupid about AKs, I thought that like the AR they were all mil-spec, that an AK was an AK was an AK. They were all the same. Boy did I learn a lesson when I couldn't take it apart and the seller had to give me a class. I bought some parts and learned from a gunsmith that I had some parts there were useless on my Yugo. I learned and learned fast. Still love what I call my steampunk Russian.
@@mikethompson2650 Everyone’s got to start somewhere, luckily those Yugo kit builds are often decent! And yea all the different variations can be annoying for ordering parts.
BTW, for those like me that have a tight latch on the gas tube lock, you can use the bolt carrier itself as a "extender" to unlatch. There is a slot in the side of the bolt carrier that makes a perfect fit for the gas tube lock latch. This grabs the latch perfectly and the side of the bolt carrier means you can easily unlock the latch. You don't need to hit the latch.
I'm from Russia and we were doing this in the school, 40 min lesson once in a week and we were competing with classmates. In order to get "A" grade you had to do disassembly and assembly in 25 seconds, my personal best was around 19 seconds.
I saw a video from Russia of such a class. I have to say that the AK they had must have had loose fitting/worn out parts. I have a Yugo AK from Century and the gas tube is beyond too tight. I have to use pliers to get a good grip. But still the kids are very fast.
@@mikethompson2650 yeah, it's very loose so you can disassemble it easily, except for the cleaning rod that might be rather tricky to get out sometimes.

0:36 I feel like a sign at every range or gun store with these very simple words, would probably help prevent a few accidents. Good on you Larry! (Remove the source of ammunition, THEN check the chamber.) Too many people forget step one. It should already be on safety. ;p
Necessary Safety Precautions as taught to me: 1. Keeping your finger away from the trigger, pick up the firearm and point it in a safe direction. 2. Check safety and apply it, if not already applied. 3. Remove the magazine. 4. Move the working parts to the rear and lock the action of the firearm open. 5. Inspect the chamber at the rear, front and then down into the well from the top. It should be clear at all three points. 6. If clear, release the bolt/allow the working parts to move forward, cocking the firearm. 7. Pointing in a safe direction, remove the safety, aim and pull the trigger to release the action. 8. Re-apply the safety. The firearm is now proved clear to YOU and only you. If someone saw you do all this, then you could now hand off the firearm to them, if they agree that the firearm is clear. If someone turns up, and didn’t see you do it, they need to see you do it all over again to be sure of receiving a cleared firearm.

Great video on the AK field stripping Larry! I love the M4 and the AK. I have always looked at it the same way you do Larry. The AK should have been the general GI weapon in the mainstream military and the M4 platform should have been used for more speciality career fields "spec ops" because there are more small parts that you can lose and a little bit more maintenance with the rifle.
