E102-4 - Ramon De Jesus Ejects Three as Marcus Semien, Mike Maddux & Bruce Bochy Argue Check Swing

- 1B Umpire Ramon De Jesus ejected Rangers 2B Marcus Semien, pitching coach Mike Maddux, and manager Bruce Bochy for arguing a check swing strike call during the inning break following the strikeout. Report: www.closecallsports.com/2023/...
The Rangers broadcast thought the umpire got the call right and that Semien did strike at Angels pitcher Chris Devenski's 3-2 changeup, while the Angels broadcast thought the umpire got the call wrong and the national broadcast was entirely unsure. There was also a strike one call earlier in the Semien at-bat that could have been balled but no one seemed to remember it.

I love De Jesus’ face when he sees Maddux running out like “wtf are you doing out here?” 😂😂
Came here to post this! 🤣👌
I had to go back and look. LMFAO That was hilarious!!
Nice catch. For the lazy, it's around 1:58
Ramon treated Maddux like he was "Rangers Captain", the palomino-style horse dressed in the team's uniform! He could barely get a word out before he was 'adios-ed'.
Mike maddux was going to be ejected anyways. A pitching coach can’t argue balls and strikes. That was a quick hook.
104 ejections and we’re already in the middle of June!
thank you Lindsay keep up the good work
when I need videos on ejections
I’m in the right place
I don't have a lot of time to keep up with baseball this summer, but I've definitely kept up with all these ejections!
Seems like it'd be easier to keep up with baseball than the ejections, lol,
Maddox looks like he's wearing one of those cartoon hat + glasses + moustache props 😁
He got it from the Bobby Valentine online store
Finally, the ump got his money's worth! A football throw kinda toss
Great stuff!
Short quick video with good commentary. That was great
Your channel is a blessing and a curse. A blessing because I have a much better grasp on the rules of MLB, but a curse because it’s so frustrating that coaches and announcers alike have no idea what the rules actually say
Imagine being an umpire 😂
As an umpire myself, we have said this for years. Everybody thinks they know the rules. They don't.
@@deanb024 and they argue when they think you got it wrong. Lol
The problem with this I think is the myth of breaking the wrists/the zone etc. I'd say if you're talking about "striking at the ball" he nearly hit the ball with how close his bat was to it (the first base angle makes it look even closer to hitting the ball than it was). Most check swings aren't that close to touching the ball. This had to be called a strike.
You're right, he aimed for and struck at the ball almost all the way to it passing by him, is absolutely a reasonable strike call. That's most of what matters in some of these types of calls.
I concur, that was too much of an attempt to hit the ball. But I don't mind leeway on a checked swing call if a ball comes up and in at a batter that thinks about swinging and then earnestly tries get out of the way.
I don't understand why mlb doesn't just change the rule so that if the bat crossed the plate its a swing. That seems to be what everyone refers to as "went" anyway and also seems to be what umpires are looking at.
@Starpotatoes someone suggested adding the word fully, so if any attempt is checked by pulling back, it's a checked swing
@@arley2246 Ick. As others have pointed out, he very nearly made contact. Deciding not to swing when the ball is exactly where it would be if you had chosen to fully swing seems a little silly. And what constitutes a full swing in any case? I'd rather it be like, "If in the opinion of the umpire, the bat reached a point where it was at an 80° angle from the batter..." or something. Then the base ump would have a compass and go down and, using a complex system of lasers, mark the location of the head of the bat, then verify via satellite.
I would call that a strike every time as he essentially swung through the pitch.
It's amazing how many ejectees are "the nicest guys who never get upset"
Imagine if they ejected the angry mean guys too 😂
I can maybe understand it if it was Marcus' first ejection, but this is his second. He argued a replay review a few years back.
@@priceright8963 Yes, but this was only his second one. Semian has been in the majors since 2013 with his first ejection coming in 2019. I'd say he qualifies for "nice guy" status.
Thankfully we have the Aaron Boones of the world to balance out those "nice guys who never get upset" ejections.
DeJesus made a number of bad calls when he was behind the plate Monday. The majority of them seemed to be tilted in the Angels favor. I would love to see his scorecard from that game.
Scorecard is up. It wasn't great, but it says +0.37 runs in Texas's favor
The AHL final is currently Hershey 3-1 over Coachella Valley
Not often an umpire records a triple play.
#UmpShow
CCS I got to say you are amazing. For sure you need to hire someone to help you with those videos. 250 ejections this season coming
You’re right, Lin. Hockey season is never done 😂
I was honestly kind of shocked when i first saw one of your breakdowns of a check swing call, that there isn't a clear description of what qualifies a "failed" check swing. With the way the rules are, they should probably just lean towards them being strikes if it's close.
Or just make the judgement call like we've always done....
Nice crowd. Ramon did not disappoint.
#UmpShow
That is absolutely a swing. He was right on top of the ball when he decided to hold it.
Insert Trevor Bauer "Sword" gif here.
Bro the bat never went past the plate blind
@@unfiltered_69420 Bro, it doesn't have to. There's no objective criteria for a swing, bro. Did he try to hit the ball and change his mind too late? That's the question you have to answer.
@@XXelpollodiabloXX "yes"
Not everyday you see a pitching coach come out and get himself run while defending a hitter lol
even less often when the manager has not been ejected
@@geoffroi-le-Hook Have you seen Bochy try and run? He's an almost 70-year-old guy who caught for 19 years. It's going to take him a while to get out there.
Semien looked at the replay and STILL was wrong about his check swing. Definitely went.
The Texas Rangers Broadcast was correct; it was close but looking at the replay he did go around.
Would love to see a thorough evaluation of each team’s broadcast’s grasp of the rules. Seems like some crews are chronically misinformed.
Love this series, CCS. Thanks as always for a great breakdown.
As an Angels fan, their announcers have always sucked (with Rex Hudler maybe being the lone exception).
I think all announcers should have to have to read and know the rule book as good as the umpires. It’s sad how many of them make themselves sound stupid because they don’t know the rules of the game.
This is why I'd love to see broadcast teams have a former pro umpire (not necessarily an MLB one, just one who knows the rules in and out) as an analyst. The insight that someone like that could offer would benefit the fans as well as the announcers.
"Hey, Bart! Can you tell us why this or that was called or not called?"
"Hey, Bart! What is the manager yelling about down there? What kind of things might be be saying if they were translated to PG?"
"Hey, Bart! If you're on the line and your partner points at you for help, what criteria are you using to decide that he did swing?"
@@linfordglick7671 they know the rules, they are giving their opinions and thoughts on how the rules are being implemented, that doesnt make them stupid, you could watch the game on mute if it bothers you that much
@@Seanster_94 what a 62 IQ thought.
I have that as a swing - and I for sure have that close enough that you don't argue it. I wouldn't argue with someone who says it's not a swing. And surely you don't get tossed over it.
He went… plain and simple
Great ejection mexhanic, maybe should have more follow through.
First pitch in vid said px = -8.3 was a definitive ball. Thought that was edge of zone. So actually a strike, or at least MOE.
Uh oh a triple ejection…time to mark that on the bingo card
Simien clearly struck at the ball, it's that simple.
I guess that means the hitting coach took over as manager for the remainder of this game.
Lmao this dude had four ejections this series🤣🤣
#UmpShow
Has anyone done a calculation to see if ejections are up after rule changes? It seems like every other MLB post is about an ejection.
I feel like Semien was looking at the first base umpire with the 'look' gesture. Something like, "watch the play, watch the swing, what are you looking at" type gesture.
When was the last triple ejection by a single umpire?
When its close, call a strike. No sure where the quote came from: 'Strikes make out, outs make innings, 9 innings makes a game.'
“We get paid for outs.”
Ump is going to have a dead arm in a few more tosses
Simply atrocious first strike call. Pitch was closer to the opposite box than the plate
It's amazing how many of these people who get ejected are described as "rarely getting upset"... 🤣
With the rule definition there is no such thing as a check swing then, you move the bat then it a strike eh?? It is a judgement call left up to the umpire problem is one umpire calls it a strike the next umpire says no swing that leads to chaos
He fouled off multiple pitches, so while it may have altered the pitch sequence from the pitcher the situatio would have been the same
The moral of this story is that even the nicest guys are sometimes a pain in the rump! And in this particular case, a pain for the ump.
Ramon's ode to Angel.
Mike maddux has two smoke show daughters, that’s for sure. He’s just being a good dad, and coach for his players lol.
Apparently this might have been a blow up caused by several games of calls like the first one, or at least that's what the Rangers broadcast would have you believe.
Wtf was the Angels broadcast watching?
Hat trick. He was ejecting everyone!
#UmpShow
To address Mr. Semien’s argument that it was a ball, he is partially correct. The call of the pitch, based on location, was indeed called a ball. However due to Mr. Semien’s attempt to strike at, and miss, a legally pitched ball the call changes to strike three.
I would like to hear Mr. Semien’s argument for why that should not be a swing, because unfortunately player’s intention does not factor into the rule, and the video evidence appears to support U1.
You can say "the video evidence supports the call" every time the bat moves forward any amount.
Still crazy that there’s not a rule that makes it easy to know what makes it a swing. Varies umpire to umpire.
If you were in charge of the rule book, how would you write a Black&White rule on swing-no-swing?
@@teebob21 a definitive line the bat must cross or a definitive movement/motion in the batters swing.
@@briank2502 So, in order to improve the game, you want to change the rule for a charged strike to a line? What happens if the bat passes that line when they are not trying to hit the pitch? Would it still be a strike anyway, and the player just has to deal with it?
@@teebob21 why would the bat cross that line if they’re not trying to strike at a pitch?
3 DQ’s for getting the call right? Who would’ve thunk it lol
What in the world is the pitching coach doing running out there. He should have been ejected the second he left the dugout.
Maybe Bochy was on the shitter?
Maddux is only a coach. Coaches are to be seen and not heard. Who knows what the player said, but I bet he mentioned video or used a colorful adjective. Bochy should have got out there much faster.
He went. Get the players and managers under control.
As much as a ball as that one was, any motion was a swing in my book. #FuckCheckSwings
He went. He tried to hit it. He was trying to foul it off. Strike three.
Move on, ladies.
Go back to dugout and look at the tablet Marcus before you get tossed and you'll see it was close enough to be called a strike. On that note, the umpire looked like he had a tad bit of a napoleon complex as well...lol.
Looks like the right call
no
@@colepriceguitar1153 Absolutely the right call.

Hat trick
Umpires have gotten soft over the years
While that call was correct, the earlier call was terrible. These Umps need more training.
De Jesus should not be an umpire. He thinks his ego is bigger than the game. That man is a disgrace to Americas past time. Thinks he’s special because he’s the first mlb ump from the DR
How did I see this on Fox News before this channel?!
Boy trying to get a uav
Just because you CAN eject someone doesn’t make it the right move. No one goes to a game to watch an ump, Semien was calm, not showing him up and not stopping play. Literal definition of thin skin umpiring.
maddox looks like he’s wearing novelty mustache / grouch marx glasses.
Marcus Semien's "look" gesture immediately after the call. Isn't that also considered an ejectable act?
I wonder if umpires should have a mandatory game off after an ejection like when police officers have a mandatory time off for firing their weapon. I would want them to be still paid for the games missed but think a mandatory time off for review would help.
Second and third umpires shouldn’t have joined and put hands on the player, coach, and manager. The argument was civil there was no need to break it up and besides it was during inning break so it’s not a time problem. If umpires don’t want to be touched then they shouldn’t do it themselves. Period.
One of these days an umpire is going to put his hands on a player and the player is going to beat the shit out of them.
And it can’t happen soon enough.
@@richardbobby4992 That will end the player's career.
Two arguing against one umpire? The other umpires definitely were right to intervene.
@@richardbobby4992 Fortunately most players are more civilized than you are.
They didn’t need to intervene that quickly. And when umpires do intervene there is no reason to put hands on any members of team.
The Angel's broadcasters are phenomenal and imo give their best thoughts about the questionable calls
You can tell she's an Angels hater
How would that not be a strike? He absolutely had the bat in a place where it could hit the ball, and was striking at the ball before trying to pull back. You'd be able to get a bunch of free bunts and other type of stuff it was about making a full swing. My own view, if you swing past the point of home plate strike, and if the angle of the bat goes clearly past that angle, strike.
Problem is it's not called the same at all by umps.
@@vw8886 Because there is no easily judged metric to determine a check swing
@@rickhaavisto9023 Did the player attempt to strike at and hit the pitch? If yes, strike.
It's very very very simple.
@@teebob21 So no objective criteria leads to umpire’s discretion. Which is my point.
@@rickhaavisto9023 Fine. Let's say you have a good point. You either have a problem with the rule of striking at the pitch or not.
If you have a problem with the current rule, what is your proposal to improve it and make it easier for fans and TV watchers to officiate?
"Forget Paris" (1995) with Billy Crystal as a crazed referee moment there. Maybe fans should call this umpire "Mickey Gordon."
at this point I feel like just existing is ejectable
At this point, perhaps if players and coaches kept their mouths shut and played ball, there would be nearly zero ejections.
Lol why does the ump practice perfect form when ejecting someone? As if he needs to use those muscles often 😂😂😂
Ramon De Jesus is one of the nicest guys. Rarely do you see him get upset. BOOM! right back at ya broadcasters who always defend the players & coaches poor behavior (did you see the stop sign?) and don't know the mlb rule. YOU did this, Not the umpire. Hilarious.
Suspend the pitching coach. You have no business on the field in that scenario.
Suspend de Jesus for putting on an #UmpShow.
So Umps can just eject anyone they want? Whats to stop them from ejecting the whole lineup? 🤔🤷🏽♂
What will stop a lot of ejections is idiot managers and players arguing correct calls.

Bochy.. well I don't know how much rope he was given.. but it's still a well after the fact argument.. and frankly... I agree with the call.. but Lindsay is very right that it is really subjective. I've seen guys call something that barely gets off the shoulder and guys no call an near full swing and everything imaginable in between.. ..
That ump is awful……
Instead of hockey, they could have used a football reference and called it a field goal of ejections ;)
Looks like the technology of being able to look at it’s with an iPad didn’t help the situation . Get rid of all this technology bs and get back to the “ pure” game as it was meant to be. But as you know , $$ matters these days; not the beauty of the game as it once was.
DeJesus is a power tripper.
He thought he was the show.
He got the call right.
Umpires putting on a show. These clowns are almost done with technology passing them and they can’t stand it.
How would technology have called that check swing?
It's a crappy rule plain and simple. Ramon DePanties-in-a-wad has to make a flip the coin type call. Semien has a right to be upset cause he should have been on first base already.
Bs, he clearly went on the swing.
No one should be surprised when one of these incompetent umpires gets punched in the face for ruining these games.
It can’t happen soon enough.
Ramon is just like Carapazza. Love nothing more than being the Center of attention and puffing out their chests by tossing players.
All of those ejections were totally justified. Idiot players and coaches earned their ejections arguing a correct call by the umpires.
It's almost like you think umpires are REQUIRED to take abuse. The worst part about the player and coaches arguing is that it wasn't even in the immediate action after the strike call. Therefore they had INTENT to create the altercation.
Weak from the umpire. No reason to eject Maddux that quickly or Bochy. Just eject the whole team so the game can be over and the fans can cheer how great you are. Pathetic.
Maddux has no business arguing with the umpire, that is the managers job. He should be ejected as soon as he walks leaves the dugout.
@@alanhess9306 Where is the rule that says a pitching coach should be ejected the moment he walks out of the dugout?
@@roymauler It is the job of the manager to talk to umpires. Assistant coaches have no such authority and will be ejected immediately. The coaches coach players, the manager manages the team and interacts with the umpires.
