No. The oil protects the wick, and the wick pulls more oil up from the jar as it burns. As long as you tip it upside down to allow the wick to soak for a second (as demonstrated in the video) it will burn for as long as the wick has contact with the oil in the jar.
If the wick burn so fast, you did something wrong, oil has high viscosity, so you need good fiber material like a pure cotton rope and don't try do oil rise so much above it's level, so one inch gonna hight above oil level gonna work well, how much higher is, more thicker has to be the wick, what does unpractical doing a high oil lamp, it has to be large to store the fuel on a low hight, and it gonna work well.
In India, millions everyday make these religious and ceremonial lamps called diyas. Same concept and the fuel used is either mustard oil or ghee (butter oil). You don't even need an enclosed jar as long as there is a way to hold one end of the wick outside of the fuel you are using
I once had to make a similar type of lamp during winter time and I've noticed that it produces black fumes which irritates the nose. When i woke up the next day and when i cleared my nose my mucus was thick black

I didn't see it lol, my story was from 15 years ago and anything in oil/grease will work even the wick you have multiple choices but has to be natural fibers and twist it so it's tighter to have the right amount of mixture oxygen and fuel to last longer, if you come across bees and think you can get the wax it's simpler as you just need fuel in the middle and the wax slow down the burning process plus you can collect calories with bees and larvas ans honey of course, I'm just giving people alternatives that could help take it or leave it and I'm translating coz English not my language so maybe weird.

@@joshua2400 Cool Anyways here’s the Recipe for brownies:
1/2 cup butter
2 eggs
1 cup sugar
1/3 cup cocoa powder
2 teaspoon vanilla extract
EXTRA TIP: IF U DONT HAVE MUCH OIL ADD JUST ENOUGH WATER THST RAISES THE OIL TILL IT TOUCHES THE WICK
Won't the wick just wick up water instead of oil?
Works great, just be aware of the fumes.
We used them one year for a couple of weeks.
Walls had a little bit of Black soote on them.
if you add a little bit of salt to the oil it will reduce the fumes
plus it is the only thing that kind of oil is good for.
Fact!💪

If you put the lamp inside a larger jar, .it makes it safer

Simple and excellent!
Should put some dried lavender in the oil, make your own scented burning oil.
How to prevent black smoke? I use cotton wick + sun flower oil.
Wick burns up too fast
Olive oil
That’s great! About how long would that last being lit? JW
Several hours.. shorter the wick, longer the burn time

It's a lot better to pour water in, pour some oil in so it sits on top. Pop a wick in there, light it and you have an actual glass Gerber lamp.
Used to make torches this way with rag
I have about 500 of those jars in my garage. I put tea candles in them
Does that put off heat?
@@doeeyeddevil4896 I mean I have them saved and ready for if the power goes out or something and I need to make light without power
I made it exactly as in the video and used a cotton wick, but the experiment did not work. The wick went out after burning after one hour.
This is amazing!
The Gerber laugh was perfect
Cute lil molotovs.
Can you use vegetable oil for the kerosene lamps?
Gonna try it with old cloths since I don't have cotton rope 👍
How long do they last?
Several hours
That's also good to throw
good to know since I don't use vegetable oil while cooking. didn't want to discard it
I have seen others with water on the bottom (with oil)is that just to stop the glass from overheating?
how long does a lamp like this last?
until you run out of oil, wick or it gets broken.
@@SW-ii5gg thanks your your response I appreciate it.
Several hours depending how big your jar is and how short the wick is at the top
@@WoodsboundOutdoors thanks my friend
I keep my old oil for exactly that purpose for the smell u can put lemon fragrance in
Good idea
Do they smell like the oils for purchase?
How long will a full jar burn?
Do you only fill jar half full?
Only if you want it to burn out quicker ..
That's so lit..... aight I'm outty
Thirsts briliant and old school
Finally, cheap candles for Hanukkah
Can you use any rope or does it have to becotton rope
You don't wanna use nylon or plastic rope because they melt, and give off toxic smoke.

So I tired candle wax and a cottons balls you can swap them from spill proof candle to fire starter with how you position it
Don't waste your time unless you want to constantly pull out more and more wick as it burns up to nothing.
The baby laugh was the icing on the cake. Hopefully nobody will be smart enough to add babies into the .....
Olive oil is a good cleaner oil
How long will it burn?
Wat Oil Do U Use?
Vegetable oil. Olive oil works too
I saw a Survivalist Couple use two tubs of Crisco to make a 1,000 hour grease candle. Yoinks!
Now would the glass explode or no ?
Lard is better. Veg oil will always burn out quick
And, there goes the cabin.
Peanut butter works just as good.
I'm watching this at 3am and the baby laugh was creepy
I can find cotton rope anywhere..not kidding
Good them like 👍🏻
Well by god
Doesn't vegetable oil get rancid
Good way to use up rancid oil, unless it stinks while burning.
List every oil that i can use
👍🙏🔥
This doesn't work. The string burns up to the cap and it's an ember. That's it
Intoxication
But does it smell like French fries?🍟

If a fiberglass wick is used it will be just like the burning bush in the Bible the wick will burn but not be consumed.
Another video I watched said the fiberglass wicks don't pull up oils well enough, they need liquid paraffin to work.
