  • In this video I critique some of my oil painting interiors. Topics include improvements I would make if I could have a do over and elements that I love about them. I hope this oil painting critique #4 video will help you examine your own paintings in a productive and growth oriented manner. It's important, as an artist, to do this in a thoughtful way occasionally to gauge your improvement in painting.

Thanks for sharing your paintings and thoughts. I’ve been painting some interiors and found your video. Very sweet tribute to your father-in-law. My condolences on his passing.

Hi Annmarie - Thank you for taking a look at my videos. Interiors are one of my favorite subjects.....the narrative you can achieve. Good luck with your painting journey.

I think your interior paintings are among my favourites Bruce. I love how you have conveyed detail without actually painting in an excruciatingly detailed way. I really like the painting of your friend's studio with the red chair. My first thought when I saw it was van Gogh's painting of his bedroom. As an aside, every so often I find a picture on the internet that I really like and paint it just for fun. It turns out that one of these is your "Slow Drift" motel room painting. Don't worry, I don't sell the paintings I copy and when I find out the name of the artist I give him or her credit. Love your videos. Thank you.

Thanks so much. Great insight on the painting reminding you of Van Gogh's room....never thought of that, but I see it. I, too, like the suggestive quality of these and the fact that extreme detail is absent. Take care.

These interior paintings are great. You have very successfully created a sense of narrative. I found hearing your critique interesting and agree it is an essential part of the process for an artist who wants to grow. Thanks also for the reminder to take multiple exposures of a scene - it’s something I used to do but it had kind of slipped my mind. Amanda

I have always enjoyed the ability to control the narrative in my still lifes and interiors. It's possible to achieve with plein air work, but I think it might be harder in the decision making process of rearrangement of elements, etc. I tend to use my plein air paintings for more of a emotional response to the subject. They all have their qualities to enjoy.

Hi, you are very talented and amazing pieces! I am new to oil painting, and I had a question for you if you can please help me. I like gamblin mediums because of the dry time. I usually do a base layer with just gamsol and the pigment, and then i start to add more and more galkyd with each layer. Maybe some solvent free gel, and then I also wanted to incorporate cold wax in the uppermost layer for a thick impasto effect. Does that sound okay? I am confused because of the fat over lean rule and dont know if I can put the cold wax on the uppermost layers because of the zero fat content. I dont want my paintings to crack in the future :)

Hi - Welcome to oil painting! You'll love it. About your concerns....what I would do is still mix a bit of the galkyd with the paint AND cold wax in the last layers you describe, to insure any bonding issues you are concerned with. Not too much galkyd as I think it will dilute the cold wax, thus making the whole point of using cold wax pointless (won't get that nice impasto). Experimentation is key.... For ratio I would try 1 pt Galkyd to 4 pt cold wax (with the paint)....see how it affects the cold wax consistency. Hope it helps.

@@habowskistudio2724 thank you for your response, I reached out to Gamblin; and they recommended a 50/50 mixture of Galked Gel and Cold wax mixed into the paint. I will try your recommendation though because i really do want a very thick impasto effect. So i will do a base layer with gamsol/paint, then a few more layers with more galkyd added each time, then a layer with galkyd gel only, and then the layer you recommended with the cold wax. Does that sound like too many mediums to you? Thank you so much for the help!

Sorry for late reply...not getting YT notifs on gmail. It sounds reasonable. Gamblin makes good product.
