  • Getting started rebuilding my CNC router but it is turning into a total new build now. Salvaging some of the old parts and most of the electronics but decided to make it larger and heavier duty. The frame is done and ran into problems with the linear guides I purchased that has put everything on hold for now. Not going to put any links until I get the problem straightened out and get to test them.

Looks like a good project. I see your wearing the same slippers I do. They are so comfortable when I’m in the house working on projects
    Thanks for sharing

Just for information mitsumi and item24 give you option to mill atleast 2 surfaces of the extrusion when you order it from them. But you got a very straight extrusion doesn't need a milled surface.

Thanks. I was surprised how flat it was. Finally got the longer ones and they are very flat also. Thanks for watching.

Thanks. Sounds like they are sending out a replacement next week that will take 5 to 7 days to arrive. Thanks for watching.

Hi, the trouble now is that they don’t have any quality control they just ship it out and if you complain then that is your quality control, it you don’t complain then they have saved to cost of having things tested.

You should buy a sheet of 3/4" pvc and make your own vacuum table top... Very nice when it comes to holding parts down

Too bad about the rail. Manufacturing defects are seemingly magnetically attracted to you some how.
I can't wait to see the water-cooled spindle motor in action.

I have never had so many problems with purchased parts before. I am a little nervous about how long it will take to get a replacement. It will definitely be a while before the spindle is fired up. Going to try and use the gantry cavities for cooling the spindle. Over 30 pounds of aluminum should make a great heatsink. Thanks for watching.

Hello Ed! Did you buy your 80/20 extrusions directly from 80/20 or from a secondary source? These extrusions are getting mighty expensive. I priced some 1.5" square (1502) rails and I was quoted $0.47/". - outch! If I may ask, how much did you have to pay for your big rails? Thanks for sharing and keep up your great work!

I purchased them directly from 8020 and yes they were expensive. It was almost $400 for the 3 of them shipped. I ordered the gantry first then had to sell some stuff on Craigslist to place the second order 🤑. I figured they were the best option to a successful build without large accurate machines to make something. Thanks for watching.

    Hello Ed
Glad to see this project underway.
I'm about to start something similar myself and it's nice to have someone go ahead and groom the trail.
I hope you don't mind my asking, is your electronics knowledge etc. self taught or have you had training in a previous career?
I am very impressed with all your skills.

Thanks. Building your own is the most affordable way to get a larger machine if you have the time. Back when I first got laid off I decided to build my CNC plasma table and that was my learning tool. I had many problems and wound up totally replacing all my original electronics to get a good working machine but learned a lot and my biggest lesson was that all electrical parts run on smoke. Let the smoke out and it's going to cost you. l was a mechanical design engineer and always had electrical engineers to take care of the electronics and software of the machinery I developed so I just handed them off block diagrams but that was it. Thanks for watching.

These companies do sample inspections. Maybe, 10 out of 100 get inspected. That rail must have missed the last pass or two. In the aircraft industry, we've experienced that a lot.

I would think a half mm would be easy to catch in a precision part. I am thinking they make different products and somehow mixed up parts when shipped. I haven't had the best luck with purchased items lately. Thanks for watching.

Were those non branded chinese rails?

Yes they are from Amazon. Replacement is on the way for the oversized rail. All the rest feel really nice. The true test will be how they handle the load. Thanks for watching.
