He sang this song to my sister Michelle in November 1995, after he helped me lift her onto the stage (she's disabled) at the former O'Keefe Centre (now known as the Sony Centre). He sat right beside her on the floor with his arm around her and when he was finished he gave her a big kiss on the lips!!!! What a guy!!!! I'll never forget that. He's so sweet!!!! :o)
he is a genius.. and I must say, that pianist has a great artistic intuition that allows Mandy to express himself without tripping over. Professionalism on a level beyond most.
yes that and the fact that they rehearsed exacty how it would be performed multiple times. Nobody just spontaneously shows up with a piano player and starts singing. It was well rehearsed and orchestrated down to every note.
This is the first time I have heard a guy sing "Children will Listen" It's very sweet Mandy looks like he means every word I love renditions like this: thanks for posting!
I've never seen anything more masculine than when he gently hits those high notes. Mandy is easily one of the sexiest men to have ever walked the planet.
To hear the vulnerability and passion from this man is something to behold. He sang this with love and worry from a loving father. He made me cry that way he sings to you. It's so tender like a hug from your dad. Beautiful. Wishes are children that gets me bc they are a blessing just like parents. Amen. ❤️
Amen! Mandy, My eldest daughter treated me to one of your Michigan concerts...in Lansing. It was long after you announced you were choosing your East coast family over the commute to LA & a TV show.
Easily my favorite rendition of this song! I think some of the other artists who've sung it have technically stronger voices, but this song is a plea for future generations. It is almost like a prayer. You can really see how much this song resonates with Patinkin, which is why it's my favorite version.
I had the incredible great fortune of LIstening to a ONE MAN CONCERT OF THIS AMAZING ARTIST YEARS AGO WHEN HE CAME TO THE ASHRAM I WAS VISITING TO SING FOR OYR TEACHER AND ALL OF US. I SAT RIGHT IN FRONT AT HIS FEET. EVERY SONG WAS A MASTER CLASS. HIS VOICE IS VERY GENTLE IN THIS VIDEO, BUT HE CAN SING ANYTHING AND HIS VOICE IS VERY STRONG. AT LEAST IT CERTAINLY WAS THEN. AN INCREDIBLE VOCALIST AND PERFORMER. IT WAS AN ECSTATIC MUSICAL EXPERIENCE. ILL NEVER FORGET IT., OR THE GOOD FORTUNE I HAD TO SIT RIGHT IN FRONT. NAMASTE!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤
Mandy shows total restraint and taste in his dynamics. So beautifully done here. Will never forget his work in "Sunday in the Park with George." Electric.
I saw Mandy in concert last thursday. It was so amazing. He started singing Children and Art from Sunday, and I just died. If you ever get a chance to see him live, TAKE IT!
Nobody sings this with more love and passion as Mandy. This song is a Sondheim masterpiece. This one along with Crosby Stills and Nash's "Teacher your children well" has me whaling in tears each time I listen to them due to the wonderful instructions for wholesome parenting .A thing which was quite foreign to me throughout my childhood. Yet the tears are always cleansing for me.
I had the privilege of meeting Mandy Patinkin in the 90s when he did a concert in Kansas City. I was amazed. The amount of energy that he had. His beautiful expression. His wonderful voice. I told my brother let's go see if you'll sign autographs or anything like that. Which famous people you really shouldn't do that. But I was like I've got to meet Mandy Patinkin. As a singer myself I was so enamored by his talent. So when it came my turn to talk to Mandy I blathered. He said what kind of music do you say? Well I sing just about anything. Opera. Musical theater. Jazz. I got all befuddled. I told them all the shows in the movies that I enjoyed him in. Then he gave me a big hug! I will never forget that concert. Never. I will never forget meeting Mandy Patinkin. I will never forget that hug! Never!
There is nothing wrong with approaching a "famous" person after a performance at a theater for an autograph. What in the world are you talking about. I would also add that in spite of his talent he isn't someone that most people would identify so classifying him as famous is a bit of a stretch.
I've never quite understood the need to knock a performer someone else loves; it's like telling someone "I hear you saying how much you love your husband, but meh - I don't really see it, personally". Marry who you wish, and live your life.
The difference in their function is irrelevant to the fact that any compulsion to refute someone else's positive feelings about them serves no positive purpose that I can see. Your love for a entertainer or spouse that I don't care for shouldn't impact my life; if it does, I have serious boundary issues.
Such lovely assembly of meaninful words "Careful the things you say, children will listen"......"Careful before you say...listen to me"....."Careful the tale you tell, that is the spell....children will listen" How I love Stephen Sondheim, what a great rendition by Mandy
I weep each time I hear this song! I cringe at what I see in public at times. The things people say.. can stick for life. *Much LOVE* to Mandy Patinkin 💕
I just saw him sing this on Monday, paired with “You‘ve Got to be Carefully Taught” and you could hear the whole audience tearing up. This man is a net good for the world.
Sometimes we hear something that is so beautiful we fail to listen to the message. The words in this tune are totally true. You can't fool your children into thinking your behaviors are acceptable because you are the parent. If you are living a lie, so will your children attempt to follow your choices. In the end, your children will suffer the consequences and you will have to witness it in your old age. I know of what I speak. I was that parent, many years ago.
What? The song has nothing to do with fooling your children into believing anything whatsoever. It is merely saying that Children learn more about right and wrong from watching you and the choices you make rather then what you attempt to teach them. It sounds like you are doing quite a bit of overidentifying and I'm sorry for whatever experience you had but that is not what the essence of the song is about.
I'm a poor gohim...but I adore Mandy Patinkin....His sepharadite look,his eyes(that have no equal in the world,believe me!)..his voice......Then,and now,I love him inmensely!!
Mandy is a wonderful performer and person. He had a cornea transplant and educated the public about organ donation. I saw him in concert and loved the show. He sings about peace and love with humor and heartbreak. His acting is powerful. We're lucky to have Mandy Patinkin.
I saw this genius in concert in London a couple of nights ago. He sang 'Children and Art', 'Being Alive', 'Sorry-Grateful', 'Someone Is Waiting' and a few other Sondheim numbers; as well as loads of other stuff. I was blown away. There's no point in anyone else even trying. I just sat and cried all the way through. This video brings that all back. WOW
What I love about Sondheim is that yes his songs are extremely difficult, but when performed by excellent singers like Raul Esparza, Bernadette Peters, and Mandy Patinkin they become more than a singer singing a song, but something truly special. A well articulated soliloquoy that enchants your soul. It takes more than good singing to perfect Sondheim's work, it takes grace and an awareness of what you're singing about. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
Sondheim’s work transcends the individual experience of life and, instead allows us to find common ground within all our personal stories. Never has there been a performer so skilled, aware and respectful to deliver that gargantuan idea of Sondheim’s work in a single voice, in every single performance. Mandy Patinkin. Mandy. Patinkin.
Ya'll are all so crazy - Mandy is magnificent no matter what/how he sings - he shows such passion and electricity in his songs - he gives me goose bumps whenever I hear him, whatever the song - saw him once in person and there is non other like him - ya'll are just know it all whatevers that critize him without closing your eyes and really listening to him
My sisters and I had the incredible fortune of meeting him in Toronto in November of 1995. They're both on disability pensions so we couldn't afford to see him in concert but we wanted to meet him at the stage door. It was a very cold night and the security guard allowed everyone into a rehearsal room for a meet and greet. When our turn came my sister Michelle got out of her wheelchair and gave him a big hug. He then asked what we thought of his show ... cont'd in Part 2 ...
just a suggestion. If you want to tell a story tell it. This isn't the place to write continuing novellas. Nobody wants to dig through comments looking for other parts to your story.
I didn't even know he could sing until two seconds ago! I LOVED him on CM - they so have to bring him back. This just makes me love him more - he has such amazing talent!
Dear Abigail, et al, Be sure to hear (thank you RUclips and uploaders!) Mandy as "Che" in the original Evita (especially "High Flying Adored"), Mandy in Sunday in the Park with George, and Mandy singing "Younger than Springtime" from South Pacific, and every performance of Mandy's. The man only produces perfection.
I would have to agree. He has a very distinctive voice and a presence that is all his. Didn't realize but my daughter said Mandy is in one of her favourite television shows, Criminal Minds. Outstanding show. Standing ovation and a small a cappella oncore by both Pat and Mandy. Audience went absolutely crazy for them. I think they felt the love. Well done Brisbane.
Careful the wish you make Wishes are children Careful the path they take Wishes come true, not free Careful the spell you cast Not just on children Sometimes the spell may last Past what you can see And turn against you Careful the tale you tell That is the spell Children will listen. One of my favorite things about him as a vocalist, musician, and performer is that he saves his voice, he saves the full voice. He has such a beautiful voice, delicate even, and he uses it so masterfully, feeling every note and word. Everyone just wants to belt anymore. He saves his full voice, using it for those moments that are just… *sighs.
Going to see him next weekend performing with Patty. My daughter was really wanting to see Patty LuPone but I think she is going to get a pleasant surprise when she hears how wonderful Mandy is.

Mandy doesn’t just sing a song. He weaves an enchanting spell over all who listen and truly hear.
He’s shit at singing but ok

Woahhh
Guuuurl, as Avigdor he totally stole the show in Yentl
Could not possibly agree more!
That’s not masculinity that’s his feminine side coming through. He isn’t aggressive here.

Happy Happy 70th Birthday Mandy Patinkin! Wonderful actor! good singer! I wish you 70 more healthy and happy years on this planet.
When he sings you can't help but believe he means every word of it... what a brilliant voice.
He sang this song to my sister as she sat onstage beside him during curtain call at a performance in Toronto back in 1995 ...
I. Am. Crying.
Jeez, Mandy, you hit this one out of the park.
I really love Mandy Patinkin since I heard him play the role of "Che" in Evita.
He's such a formidable actor.
