Good luck with your overwintering peppers, let's hope it works for us both 😊. I think I heard Colleen ask why you trim the roots so my understanding is the plant needs a balance between roots and leafy growth, if you have too much root it will absorb the nutrients and overfeed the plant and if you have too much stem/leaves the roots can't take up enough nutrients/water to make the plant thrive so by trimming the roots in the winter when it starts growing again in the spring it should have an equal amount of root and leafy growth so it will grow at it's best. Sorry if I misheard that and I've told you something you already know 😂 Take care 😊
Awsomeness Bethan !! I knew there was a reason and now I know 🤜🤛!!! That makes tons of sense. We're already seeing big differences between the different methods we used !! Thanks a million!! Cheers J&C 🌱🤞👍😊
Wow! I only went to the beauty shop for a trim on my bangs and this crazy stylist did THIS 🤪 😂 Seriously, I've never tried doing it, but I think you are getting great advice from the big brains 🧠 in our Growing Community 👍 Stay Awesome ❤Peggy❤
Hi J & C! I love overwintering peppers. Peppers need a dormant period, which is why we trim them down before we put them in a cool place to overwinter. As for the roots, I trim mine to fit them into the pots. That's the practical reason; I don't know if there's a scientific reason for it too. It looks cold out there, so stay warm!
Ahhh awesome Val !! We're interested to see if there's a big enough increase in yeild compare to starting new plants each year to justify the time and space they require overwinter aswell !! Thanks again!! Jason and Colleen 🌱🤞👍😊
I got peppers about a month earlier this year, which was nice. I'm with you on the space, though. My living room is starting to look like a plant store lol @@clivesconundrumgarden
Wow that soil just fell off 💪. I don’t over winter peppers because well I don’t grow lots and I buy starters in spring 😂. Looking a wee bit chilly there kiddos, is this the first winter you will have spent there full time. Great job Jason 👍. Have a super week kiddos 🥰🌧️🍁🇨🇦🥰🇺🇸
It's warmed up the last couple of days, actually! Not sure if the is El Nino or just being further south. The temperature swings are pretty dramatic! Cheers Colleen and Jason 🌱
Fire it in to get the air pockets out. I see a pepper bonsai tree in the making. With the root pruning and the defoliation should help your peppers over winter just fine. Cutting the roots will help to obtain more root development especially into the new soil. Never to late. Go for it. Great work!!!!!
Hi Jase, I’ve done this before. We had peppers growing for 3 years and they were amazing. I had to leave them behind in the garden when we sold our house. Great work xx Cathi xx 😘
Amazing Cathi !! We're hearing a few people had success like you !! It'll be fun to see what does well and what doesn't:))) Have a great week Cathi 🌱🤞👍😊😊😊😊

I hope you have better luck than I did. Tried the last 2 winters with no luck. I was going to try again this year but a freeze snuck in before I could pull a plant. I will try again next year. I did save some hybrid tomatoes and some sweet potato vines, they are doing fine and dandy. Good luck with the peppers! I think you have a greener thumb than I do. Stay Well my friends !!!
Haha - J and I were recently discussing whether we're actually good at gardening or have just been really lucky! It might be some good luck! Peppers are still alive and kicking! Cheers Colleen and Jason 🌱
Awesome, looks good! Can’t wait to see how they make out. The hornworm peppers look good. My jalapeño was done this year. I overwintered it for 3 seasons.
They will probably be fine. Last year , my first year. I put them on the patio without trimming. They did well all year. This time, I did the same, except I removed the leaves. We will see how our peppers do 😊
I used to do something similar to this when I grew the peppers in the ground. However, now I just leave them in pots year-round and I don't clean out the roots. Of course, mine are living in a basement that doesn't have anything else in it besides worm, so I'm not really terribly concerned about bugs. Fingers crossed!
When I watched you vid yesterday, I had to chuckle as we were working on this video. We did leave a few in soil but it was a good opportunity to try dome stuff on the inground ones !! Have a great week Ann !! Cheers J&C 🌱🤞👍🤜🤛👍👍👍👍

Wow brutal. I cannot speed from experience as have never tried to overwinter peppers. If I did think my aproche would be to dig them up with as little root disturbance as possible. Put in pots, keep in the house with as much light as possible. The harsh leaf pruning should be fine. Hopefully give you nice bushy plants. Good luck I shall be watching with interest. 🌱🫑

The peppers inside the house should do well enough. I'm interested in what you think of the effort vs results after next year. Peppers don't like cold so if they start getting exposure to temps below 40 F and definitely close to or below freezing, they will be toast.
Great point Steve. A lot of what we tried this year had future "scaling up" in mind. It was much work but will take up space in the grow room. Remind me next year to track it lol !! Cheers J&C 🌱🤞👍🤜🤛
