I think the reason there is a lot of attention on blue lock's animation is because of a mixture of a lot of things. Firstly, a lack of momentum. The first half of season 1 was pretty decently animated with some very well animated moments (isagi's first goal, some moments in team z vs team v, etc) but starting from episode 14ish, the animation went downhill and was pretty much only reserved for big moments (barou's awakening, some moments with chigiri, etc). But because of the momentum of the first half of the season and because people were so invested in the story by that point, there wasn't as much of a spotlight on the animation and people were just enjoying what was being presented. Most of the goals from season 1 part 2 were not well animated at all, and when a player would dribble past another player it would be through a sequence of 2-3 still shots.
Second thing was the movie release. Most fans were worried about the movie announcement because they thought that the time and effort of the production team would be better spent working on season 2, as not many people were interested in the movie anyways. This is where the beginning of the worry about season 2 started afaik. The movie itself was meh which increased the worry about season 2, and when the trailer for season 2 dropped, all hell broke loose. The trailer showed some of episode 1 and some of the worst moments from episode 2, which led to people believing that this was the best that the animation for the season was going to look like. At this point, pretty much everyone was talking about how bad the trailer was and how the animation for the season was going to be garbage, etc. So, once the season actually dropped, everyone was hyper focused on the animation and nothing else.
Objectively speaking, the animation from season 2 so far is pretty much on par with the second half of season 1, besides the fact that season 1 had hair and shirt animations during the "still frames" as well as running animations. Episode 4 added some of this, which is why people are saying that it is the best animated episode so far. If they added those animations in episodes 2 and 3, I don't think there would have been nearly as big of an uproar.
The biggest factor though, imo, is the fanbase and popularity of Blue Lock increasing. When a show gets that popular, not only do the expectations rise, but some people get annoyed by the attention its getting and begin to hate watch to try to find things wrong with the show. I've seen people on Twitter who post clips of the Blue Lock episodes like 20 minutes after the episode airs making fun of it. Then, RUclipsrs who react to Blue Lock hear about all the hate the animation is getting, and when they react to the episodes, they naturally focus more on the animation than anything else that is happening, and every other comment they make is about how bad it is. They add fuel to the fire, and that's how you get the kind of attention that Blue Lock has been getting. Thankfully you guys actually use your own brains and not rely on what people are saying about something to form your opinion on it.

      perfectly put
I honestly feel for fans who thought things would get better. I'm just a bit sour that we got so much shit, i banned a bunch of douchey commenters who were calling us stupid for calling the animation of last season what it was, and giving honest criticism to the show. But we went into this season prepared to hold back a lot and be more forgiving to the downfalls of the show. And all of the sudden, its now the IT thing to shit on blue lock, when in reality, while there has been a downgrade from the first half of season one, that downgrade happened far before season 2 aired and like you said there are many reasons why people didn't notice or chose to ignore it and defend it at the time.
You could say its petty, but the backlash the production is getting now really stings for us. Its like being told you're wrong by everyone, only for everyone to hop on your bandwagon after you've gotten off.
But hey, if the new thing is justifiably criticizing things, then maybe its time for BOLDcast to make a true and honest comeback

@@BOLDcast Yeah the main things that drew me to your guys' channel was the fact that you guys have actual critical thinking skills, and are not afraid to say something is bad when it is bad. Seeing that you guys are holding onto your opinions about the show and staying consistent with them even when they're not popular reminds me of why I started watching you guys in the first place.
I feel like most reactors just watch the episode, make some meaningless comments during it, get hyped at the hype parts, then end the reaction by saying "oh yeah I liked this part and that part" and that's it. Most reactor's reactions to season 1 of Blue Lock followed that exact formula. Now that its popular to hate on Blue Lock, almost every comment they make is a negative one. Watching your guys' reactions is a breath of fresh air because it feels like I'm watching actual humans with their own thoughts and opinions, rather than someone who just takes the amalgamation of the general audience's opinion and regurgitates it as their own.
If you guys stopped giving your honest opinions and critique, you would just become like every other reactor on the platform, which would be a big shame.

Disagree. For one, the issue S1 part two faced was budget. Animation was reserved for the big moments just like you said, and the rest was filled with just CGI and still frames. But still, they tried to at least make an effort. Here, they just took the still frames just so they can meet the deadline. An animator who worked on episode 2 already spoke up about it. Plus, looking at the overall story, it was necessary to well animate Isagi's goal, as well as giving more importance to Rin's and Shidou's clash. These two things have an impact later in the future. U-20 might be the most hyped up arc but that doesn't mean that's the only arc with important moments. Each episode had different directors as well like wth?

      @@Rinnegan_user756
"For one, the issue S1 part two faced was budget"
We as an audience don't really know the budget of these productions, so who's to say that season 2 isn't facing those same budget restrictions?
"But still, they tried to at least make an effort. Here, they just took the still frames just so they can meet the deadline."
The only difference between the stills from S1 and S2 are that the ones from S1 have hair and clothing animations, while S2 does not, at least not in episodes 2 and 3. I agree that adding those animations make those stills less "PNGy", but the stills from S1 are hardly enough to be considered "animation".
"Plus, looking at the overall story, it was necessary to well animate Isagi's goal..."
Was it "necessary"? How did the animation of that scene affect the story? I wish the goal looked better, sure, but I could say that for so much of the series.
"...as well as giving more importance to Rin's and Shidou's clash...that doesn't mean that's the only arc with important moments."
I totally agree, I have no idea why they omitted those parts. Maybe they will show them in the next episode, but that seems to be more of an issue with direction rather than animation.
Again, I am not saying that S2 animation is good by any means, but I am saying that the uproar online is not proportionate to the decrease in quality of animation from S1. I understand why this uproar is happening, which is what my post was about, but I do not think it is warranted to be at the level that it is at. I love Blue Lock and I wish it had great animation throughout, but that's just not case and has never really been the case.

@@BOLDcast Blue lock had a "humble"-ish start. I remember just looking through the raws since the manga wasn't even translated yet, so for those circumstances season 1 was fine, but blue lock gained some serious success and with it serious money since season 2. Its a bestselling manga for a long time and sprouted into so much more. Imagine one of the big titles producing an anime so poorly.

  • @lukasal91

The issue with the animation isn't about "suddenly" changing for the worse, it's about blue lock being "too successful" prior to have this be a glorified visual novel which somehow manages to be worse than the manga.
Context, blue lock outsold for a period of time titles like jujutsu kaisen, one piece, chainsaw man, etc. so imagine the outrage if any of those titles presented a visual novel.
It's "pretty", but that's further salt in a wound as it's there to hide and distract from nothing being animated.

Yeah the conversation around the animation between s1 and s2 is mostly due to good will, back in s1 BL was the popular new show and the first part had decent animation so viewers ended up giving a past to the second part
Now there’s a lot of expectations because the next arc is considered the best one and no decent first half to soften public reception, that combined with the fact that trashing on Png lock is just the popular thing to do right now and some really actual egregious mistakes, there’s one scene in ep2 that has an actual powerpoint transition and an animator has spoken out about bad working conditions which fuels the fire. So despite not much changing about the actual anime quality, public opinion shifted completely. I get where your frustration comes from. I think your mindset about it is probably the best way to go.

I will say the first half of season 1 did great, it’s the second half where they used a ton of still frames. I chalked it up to a rushed release and didn’t overly critique it because they showed what they were capable in the first half. I expected them to bring that again in season 2, unfortunately thats hasn’t been the case. What I htink happened is that people got hyped for season 2 and especially an arc that will later be animated so when they saw a couple of still frames they started freaking out. Personally I'm enjoying this show and will continue to do that. It's simple: If you like something, don't let other people destroy it for you.

its definitely worse than last season. but i hear your point last season was not good but the difference is they made more money than any other manga in 2023 and still failed to have good animation

To start of, first season didn't look good. If you think that looked good.. watch animes which actually have good animation. And good animation is not just action animation. Now, the second season, the hate is because ig ppl must have had high hopes that this season will look better than the (already average) first season's animation, but the 2nd season looks even worse than that. I agree with the art direction being good but that is never enough for a sports anime (ik its a battle shonen but it has football which is a sport), it should to the least have some movement. And the story in general isn't that good to keep watching it with below average animation. The reason why early one piece works with average animation and terrible pacing is because the story is too damn good! But for a show like blue lock to work it needs better animation, at least above average.
Also nothing against the animators, they just need to be given sufficient time. Also watch AO ASHI😂

Well yeah i think we all knew blue lock season 1 didn't have super good animation but there was still a lot more animation than right now there was still movement you still saw people run a lot more. You saw the ball and feets move a lot more. and thats still a million times better than what it is right now.
I think people misunderstand saying season 2 animation is worse than 1 as in saying oh season 1 had some god tier animation no nobody is saying season 1 had makoto shinkai on the studio but that doesn't change the fact that season 2 just looks obviously worse.
