On February 23rd I watched loads of videos, including this one. I couldnt roll my r’s On March 15th i was just casually doing a short rolled r and ended up doing a long one. Since that day, I can roll my r’s until i run out of breath. Here’s what I did: I first wanted to be able to do a single roll, so i said TDA (pronounced ‘ta-da’ but shorter like ‘tih-da’) over and over until it made a rolled ‘Dra’ sound. I repeated this ‘dra’ sound all evening until i was able to make a very short rolled ‘drrr’ sound, which would just stop after a tiny bit of rolling. Everyday since, I have been making all these short ‘drr’ or ‘brr’ sounds just casually, more like a habit like whistling or humming, I wasnt trying to do a full long roll, it just became a habit. So everyday from February 23rd until the evening of March 15th, I was doing these short ‘brrr’ sounds and suddenly it lasted a tiny bit longer than normal. So i did it again and i was able to do it even longer. I kept repeating these longer ‘rrrrrrr’ sounds all evening until i could do an ‘infinite’ one. Now it’s March 17th and I can do those infinte ‘rrrrrrrr’ sounds until i run out of breath. The trick is that once those short ‘brrr’ sounds become a habit, you can do them without thinking, and when you relax and do it, it’ll eventually just become a longer one. (THIS IS THE VIDEO I FOUND THIS METHOD IN, WATCH THE VIDEO TO HEAR HOW TO PROPERLY DO IT. you can ignore the second part about the Czech letters, but the first R sound is the rolled R that you’re here to learn. ruclips.net/video/V9LQDTiDcrA/видео.html ) PLEASE KEEP UP LEARNING TO ROLL YOUR R’s!! I feel really proud of myself for getting it because I felt so useless and stupid when all the videos I watched werent working. It’ll help you with lots of languages and it’s a cool skill to have.
@@Armonicyila hope it helped! I didn’t come up with this method btw, I think I saw it in a video about Czech pronunciation.. not really sure as this was nearly 2 years ago now. It gets incredibly easy once you manage to do it once. It’s all about relaxing and making it into a habit. Best of luck, whether you’re learning it for a language, or just for a random skill.

O.M.Goodness! For weeks, I've been trying to get even the smallest double r out when speaking. Tonight while watching this video, I said 'el carro' and managed to get one out. Thank you, thank you so much. I will keep practicing with this method :-)
I am planning to take Spanish courses soon, and I know for a fact I will have to master the trilled R. I came from 5 different videos before I stumbled upon yours. I rewatched yours twice, and it hit me when you said "Force air over your tongue." At that moment, I paused the video and did what you said. I did a trill! A little tiny one! And then I tried it again, stumbled, but then focused on where I was placing my tongue and where I was directing my air. Then I did it AGAIN! I can't believe I learned it! In the matter of a few hours, I can do baby trills! It will only be a matter of time before it becomes muscle memory and I can incorporate sound into them to form words. Thank you so much for your explanation!
Omg!!!! I have not been able to roll my Rs for 38 years but I CAN after this video!!!!!! I was literally screaming in my living room. My dogs went nuts, my husband ran in. Ugh. Thank you thank you thank you!!!!
I prefer this video over all the other's. hopefully it works..... Imma need to be able to roll my r's before my study abroad in argentina is over. Got til december
The problem isn't that I can't roll my r's--I just learned how to do it a few days ago. But when I try to say a word that requires a double rr sound, it sounds very forced and does not sound natural. Any way to fix this?
I would try mimicking native speakers pronouncing these sorts of words over and over until your speech lines up with theirs. The more you listen, the more you practise making the shapes with your mouth, the easier it'll become. Check out how I did this recently with Mandarin and it'll give you an idea: bit.ly/2xqn9VB
I've gone for many more decades than you trying to make this sound. I can finally make my tongue roll but can't make any vocal sound with it. As soon as I try that it stops. So I guess I'm getting there because you were at the same place once. Very helpful video. Thanks!
I've been trying to roll my 'r' for years. I can pull off the tapped 'r' most of the time, but the only time I can get close to a trilled 'r' is when I say it after a 'd' (I can say "Drrracula" and "drrrei") or a 't'. Occasionally I can do the trill if I'm singing in Finnish, but it's very hit and miss. I can't keep the 'rrrrrrrr' sound going, no matter what I try. It's so frustrating.
That's interesting Corinna, maybe it's the movement between 'd' and 'r' that's enabling you to pronounce the sound, as your tongue moves backwards from the 'd' position for the uvular trill. Once you've got one trill you'll be able to get the rolling trill eventually, just keep at it until they physical movement is more natural
+MimicMethod yeah it is kind of weird. And annoying. :P My problem might be that my tongue doesn't stay relaxed. I think once I get figure out how to keep it relaxed, I'll get it. I'll definitely keep trying.
Thank you so much for this! I’ve been trying to figure this out for a couple days now and the way you described it just completely clicked for me, and I could suddenly do it without it sounding forced!
You have some great tips. I figured out roughly how to do it watching some other videos (after many years of thinking I was incapable, like you) and then stumbled upon yours. I’m able to refine it a bit now now, realizing that words are said with the exhale of a breath. I wasn’t able to “erre” before while rolling and I can now. Thanks!
Don't be discouraged. No one ever reaches a point of mastery without passing through many points of embarrassment. Just gotta "tongue roll" with the punches I suppose ;)
The alveolar tap is extremely easy for me because I natural pronounce better that way. But the trill is a major struggle. Carro sounds like like kah-da-roh when I try to roll it. I think it was one of the main reasons I wanted to learn French over Spanish in high school. Will keep practicing though. It’s very difficult to make sounds you’ve never made before.
Yeah, I've never been able to pronounce the trilled r, despite the fact it's the correct pronounciation in my native language. I can also pronounce the alveolar tap, I can trill even quite weird parts of the vocal apparatus. Heck, I've even learnt quite seamlessly how to pronounce the arabic pharyngreals, even my egyptian frend and my arabic teacher were surprised. The alveolar trill still seems to evade me despite soo much effort

I doubt so - the mechanism for trill doesn't have to do with your teeth. It's airflow over your tongue, causing it to vibrate against your gumline. In the end it doesn't make much contact with your tooth
I’m having a problem when I try to do this I think I’m doing like the French version cause it’s coming from the back of my throat and I don’t know how to fix my situation
See, I don’t know if I’m doing it right, because everyone says to forcefully blow out with an relaxed tongue, but I just make this dying cat sound in the back of my throat which vibrates my tongue. It makes this weird noise that kind of sounds like I’m rolling my r, but it’s not very clean. Oh, and I can’t do a consistent roll of my tongue.
When I do this, should my tongue be moving from back to front or front to back, when I do it once it goes from front to back, is this how it’s supposed to be?
My spanish teacher told me that the only americans who had perfect accents did your program. So here I am. My goal is to sound like a Paisa by any means necessary.
a "cheat" i discovered myself is to squeeze the area above your adam apple and narrow your wind pipe , it will help you pronounce your first R but without your tongue ;)

It makes this weird noise that kind of sounds like I’m rolling my r, but it’s not very clean. Oh, and I can’t do a consistent roll of my tongue.
This is actually very helpful, thank you
When I do this, should my tongue be moving from back to front or front to back, when I do it once it goes from front to back, is this how it’s supposed to be?
My spanish teacher told me that the only americans who had perfect accents did your program. So here I am. My goal is to sound like a Paisa by any means necessary.
My thanks to your Spanish teacher! I include loads of tips on the blog & newsletter, too. If you're interested, here's the link: bit.ly/2uYJQ0W

Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Is there a purr in the back of the throat that people leave out? Or is it all tip of the tongue?
YOUR AWESOME I'M SOOO HAPPY I CAN DO IT NOW !!!!!!!
Yippee!
a "cheat" i discovered myself is to squeeze the area above your adam apple and narrow your wind pipe , it will help you pronounce your first R but without your tongue ;)
I can roll my R but not in words!!

Awesome, happy it worked for you! Keep at it!
