If there is a heavy band that I really like what they do with synths it must be Cult Of Luna. From beautiful ambient soundscapes to searing solos and chest pounding walls of heavily distorted waves (Cold Burn intro for example). Complimenting each other with rest of the instruments
The band that’s made me see synths in a new light recently is Silent Planet with their album SUPERBLOOM. To me it’s the perfect blend of thall/metal core guitar riffs and dark industrial/cyberpunk synthwave. I struggle with both 😅 so it’s been good practice trying to figure out how to play the riffs then program an ungodly amount of midi bends..
Thanks for the good tips -- I was especially impressed with the stabs in tip 4. Synthesizers and prog/metal guitars can co-exist, I mean, Jordan Rudess and John Petrucci have had an alliance for decades now. This fact as well as videos like this make me happy as I wax nerdy for both guitars and synthesizers. I remember really enjoying the 80s synth hook in the Omnium Gatherum's hit "Gods Go First". I'm gonna check out some of your stuff now.
Awesome video! To me a very good example is "Escolha Errada", by Julio Victor, which is a song that heavily relies on synth instruments while still being heavy and having a lot of metal characteristics. Keep up the good work ;)
Thanks for sharing about this lesson, and after I'm understand this, I can expand my imagine into my create song (still progress) with adding any synth instruments.
Great video and super spot on. I tend to use all these great tips when writing synths as the keys player in the band I'm in Beneath The Ruin (shameless plug as we've just released our debut haha). But definitely doubling guitars and arpeggios as well as for fast parts usually an octive higher with a sync sound does sound amazing. When I'm not using synth sounds though heavy organ tends to blend super well for doubling riffs and for big choruses as long as you keep the upper harmonics in check otherwise it just sounds like deep purple!
Just listen to Dimmu Borgir, Therion, NIN, Marylin Manson, Monkey3, Space Slug and the like. Synths and metal all over the place. The key is doing it tastefuly.
This is cool but definitely on the older side of approach like Dream Theater, very 90s and a little bit cheesy in terms of sound design. As opposed to more modern styles but I can dig it.
What I personally also like very much is to use synths to create a "hymn-like" sound like here: ruclips.net/video/TwOhXvNiByY/видео.html Of course this has not much to do with "progressive" but metal in general. Maybe it's a bit "too 80s" for some people - but I love that century 🙂
Honestly, I love having guitar and synth fade in and out together.
It’s a good sound!
You’re playing as well as songwriting is absolutely bonkers. Definitely a wealth of knowledge in this channel, can’t wait to learn more from you 👍🏻
Glad you’re enjoying it! Just trying to share some of what I wished I had learned sooner.

You nailed it. This is exactly how a synth should be put to work. Bravo from Sweden.
Thank you!

You’re welcome! Synth + Metal is always a good combo.

Just found this vid and it’s great, then I went and listened to your original stuff and it is really good. You should collab with some vocalists

Thanks! I’ll have to check out that song.
3:12 unreal picking speed. Unreal

Let me know how it goes!!

Glad to know a real keyboardist approves! I'll check your band out!
Awesome, thanks! Your content and music are so good.
Looking for exactly this subject thanks.
You’re welcome!
Really brilliant lesson, learned a lot from this!
Thank you!!
Great guitar tone!
Thanks!
Great video answered the question perfectly
Thank you!

All great examples!!
could you recommend any free vsts that are any good for power metal synth at all?
Cool
Thanks!

It’s definitely in that vein, though I’ve found some uses for synth in the heavier modern stuff as well
hey man great vid, what tone are using for the tip 1 synth?
I believe that is from native instruments Massive. I have some presets from a company called auditory designed specifically for Prog Metal.
@@TheProgSchool cool thanks

Nothing wrong with a little 80’s now and then!
what keybord vst or sound you use ?
@@Artidiology most of my sounds come from Native Instruments Massive, but I use a few others as well
What's the name of the song at 2:20 tho'? 29/16? Nuts lmao
That's my song 'Cosmic Void':

Lots of crazy rhythms in that one!
Afraid of the numbers?
7 beats + 16th, pretty typical
However, hitting that 16th is insane
top. i'll linten ur music. i like it
Thank you!!
Listen to Dead by april. A sweedish metal band. Their synth is something different.
I’ll check them out!
Clowncore moment
You’re not wrong!
