  • In this video, I'm reviewing the GE opal 2.0 nugget ice maker. This nugget ice maker is a great option if you're looking for an affordable ice maker that can handle a large quantity of ice.
    In this GE opal 2.0 review, I'll show you how to clean the nugget ice maker and have it as a great back up solution incase your main fridge ice maker goes down for maintenance. Thanks for watching!
    This was a purchase my family made over 2 years ago and had no clue it would get us through our main ice maker on our Whirlpool crapping out on us! Not only is it really convenient is pretty affordable compared to industrial nugget ice makers.

    Thank you for excellent step-by-step instructions. Our ice maker was "screaming" so loudly we were ready to toss it, and it's not even a year old. I had tried to follow the steps in the manual but found them too vague for a non-techie like me. Your youtube gave us back our Opal Icemaker--thank you! It has worked without a whimper since following your guidelines. I now clean it monthly--and we have great ice whenever we want it.

      Good to know someone else had bio-slim. 4 months not doing the monthly clean-had bio-slim. Yuck. Now will do monthly cleaning. I use distilled water only. He says he does not use bleach water. Best to dilute per manufacturer’s recommendation. Then, 3 water rinsing. Thats changing the water 3 separate times, then cycle the clean cycle at least twice with each water exchange. Should have no issues with bleach water in the machine. The key is monthly cleaning, and using distilled water. If you use tap water, you need to let the vinegar set inside the machine for 18 hours with several sponges stuffed up into the shoot to descale. This should be done monthly as well. Yes, its bit labor intensive, but you will get longevity out of your machine. My first Oral 1.0 last 3 years. I did not clean it for 2 solid years. I love this machine. No problems that was related to my neglect

When I’m completely done with the cleaning I set up the machine in the final place where it will be. Make sure all hoses are connected and not obstructed (I figured that out the hard way) and then I use the reservoir to fill the well to the fill line inside of the machine. Thanks so much for this video demonstrating how you clean and maintain your GE Opal 2.0 ice machine. I've been reading everything I can for the past few days and watching videos to determine if I wanted to buy this machine. I decided last night that I was going to buy it and found your video today. Helpful to me because I've been using a home water distiller for a little over the year and use citric acid to descale it, heating up the water in the distiller to do this. I want to do the same with the ice maker and your video was the first mention I have seen of using warm water in your descaling/cleaning process. I wanted to be sure using hot water would not cause any damage to the ice maker. The distiller doesn't boil it but does make the water hot. I live in an area that has very hard water and descale my distiller regularly. Do you use warm tap water or heat up the water before adding the vinegar and then running it through the ice maker? I will likely use heated distilled water with the citric acid crystals in it to descale both at the same time. I could test the heat from the distiller to that of my sink's hot water faucet if you are just using hot tap water. I also do not want to use bleach. Much, much thanks. I used your affiliate link to buy the Opal today. Happy to do so.

    • @AviatorsGarage
      @AviatorsGarage  Год назад

      Do would say distilled water would be the supreme water for cleaning the opal. I think you have a great plan. I just use warm water with vinegar mix, (half of the spare water tank which is 1/4 vinegar to water). I run 3 cycles of that on the cleaning mode. Then 3 cycles of reverse osmosis water through it. I only use reverse osmosis in the ice maker. I’m not sure I would use hot water just because of the tubing in the back of the machine. It may get damaged. I hope this information helps. I really appreciate the comment and the purchase. Thank you for watching and I’m here if you have anymore questions.

Over the next couple days unnoticed that the ice causes the water in the glass to be cloudy, and there is lots of white residue forming on the inside of the tank reservoir where the water pours down in back. Do I need to do the whole cleaning process a few more times to get it all running clean?

      Sounds like to need to do a lot of rinse cycles. Each time you do one replace each rinse with fresh water. It will be a time consuming process. I highly recommend using reverse osmosis water for making your ice. Sounds like you may have a hard way problem. I’m not a plumber by any means. I’d have a water treatment company come test your water. I live in FL and the water is terrible. My family decided to invest in a very high quality water softener system and reverse osmosis. Thanks for watching.

    • @AviatorsGarage

      To my understanding, it will continue to make ice because of ice in the tub will melt after it’s made go into the reservoir beneath the tub and there is no way to keep the tub cold. It is an endless cycle of it turning on and off, depending on how much ice is in the tub and if it’s used and it melts.

    GE recommends distilled water. I bought a distiller for 100 bucks. I never get that buildup. 🤮 All that gunk that’s in your Opal- that’s what is in my distiller. That reverse osmosis is not cleaning the water. I use the filter cartridge (an aftermarket brand). Between the distilled water that’s recommended and the cartridge it will prevent the buildup. Those cartridges really need to be changed every three months for sure. If not you’ll get the dreaded “add water” even when the tank is full. I purchased my unit “like new “ on the bay for $295 and that included a side tank because my ice maker went out as well. My fridge is 14 years old. I’ll let it completely go out iso of fixing the ice maker.
    Anywho, the Opal 2.0 is nice but it’s not worth over the $500- $600 retail.
