Hello, Norman....just discovered you today....nice to meet you! Thank you for mentioning the tendency of this fabric to draw in and become narrow and the need to cast on extra stitches. Yours is the only video on double stockinette that talks about this...I don't know why. Thanks for this great instructional video. I will be watching more from Nimble Needles.
Thank you for this demo. I have watched twelve to fifteen videos on how to do the double stockinette stitch and your video is the only one I made progress with.
Thank you, again, Norman! I saw this stitch on another site, but could not understand it. I kept getting double garter stitch -not what i wanted! So instead of getting frustrated (I do like to think I’m smarter than yarn), I thought, what would Norman say? An here it is, perfectly explained, including the reason behind the movement back to front. Now I have it in stockinette 🤗 You must have born to teach knitting techniques, you are such an excellent teacher;))
Thank you once again, Norman! This is so helpful and I am so grateful you provide the world with your videos. I finally feel ready to tackle some double knitting without fear!
You were the only one who explained how to identify the stitch if you forgot where you were in the pattern. After you showed the "V" as the knit stitch I literally saw the light. You're amazing!
This is so good. I have been spending a lot of time trying to find out how double stockinette stitch, and yours was do only one I made some progress with. Great Job, Mr. Norman.
As usual, one more amazing tutorial Norman. I just knitted a pair of mittens but it turns out that they are not warm enough for our Canadian weather. So this looks like the way to go. Thank you soooooo much.
be careful tho. increases and decreases work a bit differently in double st st. So..what you can always do is, you can use your mittens as liners and knit a second pair one size bigger = double the fabric = double the warmth
Lovely tutorial! I so appreciated you did this in continental as almost all other ones I watched were in English style and couldn’t follow. It’s a big wonder as no one here in my country does English style knitting..
Thanks, now i know what i am knitting whole day. I tried something else but wasn't fine with he results so i knitted that way. Didn't know what it is named. so thanks for that.

Hi Norman, please could you do a video or explain how to tink mistakes with this stitch. Every time I make a mistake I generally end up having to go back to the start, which is really frustrating after a month or so.
Thank you for this video. Can you also teach us how to do increase in double stockinette knitting? The pattern called this double knitting so I was confused! There is no support for this purchased pattern. Much appreciated!
You're the first tutorial I found that answered my question about knitting that sucker in the round. THANK YOU! One question though: I want to knit this kind as a long tibe to wear as pulse warmers - do you think cast on/off edges will stay where they are or will the migrate all over the place with takibg the warmers on and off, since the knitting is basically just connected at the ends and not throughout the middle? (I hope this wasn't too confusingly phrased.)
I don't think they will migrate. But, feel free to check out my more recent tutorial about the brioche stitch. It will look a bit different but it's just as warm (cuz it's a similar technique).
Hello Norman! I just learned how to 'double knit' for a project, but am not intending to knit the colourwork part (i.e its a picture of a bird) so it comes down to just knitting with two different colours. Do i still need to 'double knit' or can i just do 'double stockinette'? I found the latter is way easier. I hope you get what I mean! Thanks.
Hey Margherita. Increasing double stockinette stitch is rather complicated. You have to do two increase next to each other. After a knit stitch, you have to increase a purl stitch from the wrong side and then turn around to M1R into the strand between two knit stitches. Probably makes no sense without a video.
hm..i don't think I have the time to do that right now. However, it is exactly the same as in normal knitting. only one side will urnavel and you can fix that side with a crochet hook in the exact same manner.
Is it possible to separate the front and the back of the work due to its double thickness? The reason I’m asking is, I knit a “quilted winter vest” years ago that two sides were knit at same time and I was able to be separated the two sides. And I don’t know the name of the stitch pattern.
@@NimbleNeedles This is a increase but im assuming for decrease you could just knit the knit and purl loop together twice? that way its decreased front and back? thats my only guess i see on your blog several asked for a decrease on double knit but i cant find it
well.....kinda. so you'd have to start with 100 if you want a scarf of 50. However, since it's typically a bit more stretchy and looser...80 could be a good bet.
Norman- a bit of an odd question but do u know of any resources out there talking about knitting cables in double knitting? I so hope you can direct me somewhere 😊
No, not really. It's certainly possible but most don't bother because it's a lot of shuffling stitches around. Maybe I'll do a video on advanced double knitting..but let's see
Thank you! Does this stitch use more or less yarn than 1x1 rib stitch? I just finished a stockinette scarf but I’ll likely unravel it because I’m not a fan of the curling :( I originally started it with rib but thought I might not have enough yarn for the length I want, but now I just really want a flat scarf (even after blocking when I wear the stockinette scarf it just rolls up haha) Any advice would be super appreciated! Love your videos!!
great video thank you! so if you want to do a scarf in double stockinette, do you double the cast on for a regular stockinette? I have a simple stockinette pattern that uses 50 stitches. If I want to knit it in double stockinette, should I also double the cast on?

I want to knit a Hoover blanket (Lou Henry Hoover) and the instructions confused me, do you have a video on something like that project, or is this video using the same technique that blanket calls for? From what I've seen I think she used this double knitting method.
This is a historic blanket, the designer is long deceased. Beautiful history lesson, that's why I am interested. Your technique is different, and I may try both 😊
I need help! I wanted to create a potholder/hot plate - so a simple square in double knitting. I knit a swatch and measured a gauge of how many stitches per inch so I could make it a certain width to match a pot I have. Every time I attempt this the width is way off from what I calculated. I have done this several times. I knit a swatch long enough for the fabric to settle into the pattern, and my tension is very consistent. I am not sure what I am doing wrong!
I love your videos but I'm really struggling with this one. I knit the English way, not usually a problem though it looks so different to the way you knit, but I'm left handed too and combining these two factors even with your clear instructions I just can't get this right. And I can't find this stitch left handed in any video's. I wonder if you may have any suggestions.
I’m a beginner knitter and make mistakes very easily😅 I’m trying to make a scarf with fuzzy yarn (questionable choice, I know) so I find it difficult to recognize the stitches below. How would you unravel several lines without having to un-knit every stitch? Thank you!
I want to make a scarf with a mosaic pattern but want it to be reversible - that is, I want the floats to be hidden. I saw a scraps blanket pattern made in the round, with slipped stitches at both ends to make folds (like a smashed tube). Because it is knit in the round, there is no need to weave in ends, they are hidden in the “tube”. Thank you for your time, Norman. :)
If I have a pattern for a jumper say in SS to do it in Double SS do I cast on twice as many stitches as the pattern says? How does it work when you decrease and add stitches along the way?
Hey Linda, as a rule of thumb, I never comment on other patterns. I don't feel it's my place and I have no clue what the designer envisioned. typically if it says cast on that many stitches, that's how many you cast on. There shouldn't be any secret math or formula involved
Why is the first stitch not showing as being slipped on the previous row? And is this really a suitable video for beginners if it not showing the process from casting on or even suggesting the best cast on for this pattern?
i've been working on a scarf with thin stripes in this stitch and haven't had any problems but now i've notive that the edge where i switch yarn seems to be opening... I'm too far in to unwind it all so i'll probably sew the edge together at the end but i wonder if it's the way i'm tucking in the leftover yarn strings? i just knot them and pull them into the pocket the double fabric makes, there's nothing unwinding but the edge is just open in sections and i can't figure out how it's happening
probably, to be quite blunt, because you are not following the instructions to a word. It's easy to mess up, mind you, and sometimes you will bring the yarn to the back when it should be in front..but that's probably what is going on.
@@NimbleNeedles Well, I'm not following any pattern save my own colour scheme but I think I've figured out what's going on... The layers seem to part whenever there's a stripe that's a single row so I'm thinking it's because the yarn simply doesn't close on that side while moving on to the next row Whenever there's a wider stripe the fabric is closed...
@@franciscasantos3770 well..you didn't say you are knitting stripes ;-) A full repeat is 2 rows, so having stripes that are at least 4 rows high, does help. Otherwise, watch my video on double-knitting where I show a more advanced selvage stitch.
Knits up so squishy! But I don't understand, if you're slipping every other stitch, how are you knitting each row twice??! 🤔 Wouldn't there be less knitting than otherwise?
well...each stitch needs to be knitted to produce a row. If you only knit half of the row..well..the other half (the one on the back to be quite precise) is still missing.
Me again, can someone tell me what this pattern is called in German? Would be very helpfull, to find a video where it is explained in german for a friend. She doesn't speak english. Thanks.
I really can't tell you. typically, double knitting is called "Double Face" in German (yeah...makes little sense I know :p). But I am not really aware of this particular stitch having its own name here in Germany. You might call it "Doppelt glatt rechts" but that's far from a household kind of name.
@@redzora80 no...though it speaks for you that you realize that double-knitting and brioche/patent are extremely closely related (or rather the same thing). But that's actually uncommon knitting knowledge and most books will tell you it's something totally different. I did find a couple of entries for doppelt glatt rechts. But this might just be a translation of the English term, as double knitting has a very short history in Germany (probably less than 30 years).
@@NimbleNeedles Many thanks norman. You are my go-to-guy...the next issue I have as a ham fisted man is how it's best to hold the yarn. Clips show rapid knitting with little excess movement of the yarn over and around the needle as it is held taut ready to go at the flick of a wrist. My attempts at this are not successful. Any tips please.
@@captainswing4487 well, if you watch my newest video, I show you exactly how i tension the yarn. However, my hands are not exactly toilet lid size. So, I do admit I'm not sure to what extend I can help you there. I would need a little more detail then.
@@NimbleNeedles it is connected at the edges, the cast on, and the bind off. But, The middle is not connected. I guess bubble is a better analogy as all sides are sealed but I can pull the two faces of the swatch away from each other. It is like I made two fabrics that are connected at the edges. I want it to be one fabric that is thick and squishy
@@NimbleNeedles what? The separate sides is a fundamental aspect of the stitch. This is a technique to do double knitting with one yarn for gosh sakes If you don’t have any ideas that’s fine but don’t try to gaslight me

A full repeat is 2 rows, so having stripes that are at least 4 rows high, does help. Otherwise, watch my video on double-knitting where I show a more advanced selvage stitch.
@@nimbleneedlestwo Will do, thank you very much!
How to increase in this pattern?
it's a bit more difficult and you'll probably need a cable needle. You could look up double knitting increases.
Thank you!! 😊
How to change colours for this stitch? Just simply how I'd do for garter or stockinette or something special? 😭
You can use possible any method good for colorwork. It's weaving in that is problematic
@@NimbleNeedlesif it's possible could you show a tutorial on what works best for you? Your videos are very clear and helpful!
@@NimbleNeedlesalso how to pick up stitches if we make a mistake, because for some reason I'm finding it difficult to do that with this stitch
How do I count the rows if I've lost track?
just the way you normally would and then multiply it by two. So each little "V" on the right side stands for 2 rows
@@NimbleNeedles thank you so much, that's what I thought but wanted to verify!
Can you start in the beginning
you can use any of these cast-ons: ruclips.net/video/2IWI2jIpmBM/видео.html
Thank you
you are very welcome :)
@@NimbleNeedles ok, but thanks. I thought it might be something like doppelt glatt patent or something but it isn't.
Hey there, does anyone have experience with using this double stockinette stitch with heels and soles in Socks?
Good video anyhow :)
not me, at least. I did double knit socks, tho and so it definitely can work. not sure if you just do it for the heel
Herrlich !
I have just read the label on my supermarket yarn. Double knit?.. What the..?
Ask Norman...he'll know what to do.
Haha..glad to hear you think so high off me. But...here's your answer: nimble-needles.com/wool-and-tools/what-is-double-knitting-yarn-dk-weight-yarn/
I would need a little more detail then.

my videos are only available in english as of now.
Is there a way to keep the sides connected? I don’t want a pocket
You should not end up with a pocket. They ARE connected 🤔
@@zekiah2 well..then you are doing something wrong and not following my tutorial
@@NimbleNeedles what?
The separate sides is a fundamental aspect of the stitch. This is a technique to do double knitting with one yarn for gosh sakes
If you don’t have any ideas that’s fine but don’t try to gaslight me
Can you make a hat with this stitch
yes sure. However, do keep it mind to use smaller needles than you usually would and decreases are a bit more tricky in double-knitting.
For beginners, you are too quick. I'll go search on other channels !
maybe my second channel is better for you. It features slow-motion repeats for almost all videos: ruclips.net/channel/UCDUgpVfqgFHcFGq-AkhktoQ
(Ps: you can switch the play speed via the settings button here on yt)
I've never seen knitting done your way before.
Thanks!
