I'm a couple years older than J. Cole, so i can relate. I used to hate on the younger generation but not anymore. There's still a lot of decent music out there if you look hard enough. Not all of it is trash like Lil Pump or Migos. A lot of old heads forget that we had trash rappers too, especially in the 90s and early 2000s. Dr. Dre recently co-signed Cordae too and that's saying a lot because he signed Snoop and Eminem back in the day.
Word. You got valid points without a doubt. It is a double-edged sword, you dig? There are raw young artists like Chris Rivers, KAAN, Mad Squablz, Dax, Token, Therealak, Merkules, Denzel Curry, Mick Jenkins, NF, Wati Heru, and others. There is a high number of whack rappers who are young too. Like you said, there were weak artists back in the day too. People should not get that misconstrued. The caveat back then was that there existed a greater amount of thorough rappers back then than the amount now. You would get clowned badly back then if you didn't have abovepar talent. There was a higher level of importance placed on skill in the 90s in a way. That importance has reemerged now for sure. YBN is far from weak. He is definitely not a mumble rapper. He was spitting mad facts in that response song. He respects legends like Kweli and Mos from Black Star. I grew up on lyrical music. I grew up on Wu, Nas, AZ, Jadakiss, Biggie, Twista, Common, and many other goats. At the same time, Cordae feels that it's not fair to knock the younger cats for their music grind, which is legal by the way. Legal earning of income is unquestionably commended. Rappers who are earning their mulaa from rap and not from illegal acts are to be praised. But the poisonous rap that's being spewed is unacceptable and deleterious to be real. It has an immensely negative influence on certain listeners. Word. I need to listen to more of YBN's music. I am 23. I am part of the younger generation but my mind is ahead. I'm impartial when it comes to sides. Both sides have valid points. Cole's song is thorough too. Jermaine is one of the nicest lyricists and best lyricists with substance in the past decade for sure. @Thomas Leo

I think the genius of what Cordae did here was just pointing out the fact that the old heads always hate on what's new. This is a tale as old as time everywhere in life. That's an oldhead hating on the new generation and what it has. This shit been happening since the dawn of man and while Cole made some legit criticisms of modern rap culture it's true that he is being a reactionary to the new culture like the generations before him.

Hey I’m back after watching this and I see he answered my question by playing both sides. In which I do the same in my music. It’s not hard for me as I grew up off classic hip-hop and dance/vibe with new school hip hop but to also know that it’s difficult for the mainstream to accept the 2 combining I ALSO agree, like my music, they will be drawn to it in time. Maybe that’s why *YBN* is the way it is. If u pay close attention these 3 young artists are the main “bops” for today’s love for hip-hop.
Wat do I mean by that? *Nahmir* plays apart of both lyrical and bangers. More flex than lyrics but get it how u live my guy. *Cordae* is obviously the lyrical one. The songs he’s laid out so far in his career share characteristics of old school songs lyrically if not story wise [Ex. #Target ] and last but not least *Almighty Jay* plays the flex card. If not that the “hard nigga”.
To further display why I feel like this I could pull 3 other artists now that are seen as today’s goats that share similar qualities and are famously known and or heavily listened to because of those distinct styles.
