    Shoulder In & Shoulder Fore
Let’s talk about shoulder in and shoulder fore! Some of you might be thinking “What’s the difference?” or “When should I use one over the other?” So this week’s video is here to give you some tips to you shouldering your way to a better ride!
Let's look at Shoulder Fore first!
Shoulder fore is a great suppleness and strengthening exercise.
When going down the rail, because all horses hips are wider than the front end, if outside shoulder and hip are on the rail, he’s going to look haunches in
Shoulder fore is about aligning the inside hind leg in between the two front legs and engaging the inside hip. Shoulder fore has no bend in the body.
    How to ride shoulder fore
Put outside shoulders and hips on the rail
Think about using inside leg to squash inside hind leg closer to outside rail
Use outside rein to bring his shoulder a tiny bit off the rail
    Aids for shoulder fore
    Sit on inside seat-bone
Apply inside leg at the girth
Outside rein makes sure he’s not falling on the rail with his shoulder.
Shoulder fore isn’t ridden with a lot of angle like shoulder in. Think of it more as an exercise of mindfulness about where the inside hind leg is!
    Now onto Shoulder In...
Shoulder in has more angle and is a logical progression from shoulder fore. This movement requires bend through the spine, and is a three-track movement. The three tracks are:
    Outside hind
    Inside hind & outside front
    Inside front
    How to ride Shoulder In
Prepare by riding a 10m circle that stars at the rail .
At the end of the circle ride one more step of a second circle.
But then in that position, push your horse straight down the rail.
    Aids for Shoulder In
Inside leg at the girth keeping the haunches at the rail.
Outside leg and rein bringing the shoulders off the rail.
Rider’s shoulders turn to the inside
Weight on the inside seat bone
So shoulder-in is just an extension of shoulder fore but with more angle and bend through the body. You can test if your shoulder in is working because you should be able to give with the inside rein and they will soften.
    These are great exercises to
    Get your horse supple
Get your horse to engage the hind leg
Connect from inside leg to outside rein
The two movements are quite similar so have a look at the video and watch Mercurio show you exactly how the two movements differ so Dive IN and get your skills to the FORE. Let me know in the comments if you like this video! Thanks for watching and Happy Riding!

Important DISTINCTION and very helpful the physics of horse's desire to canter with haunches inwards to lessen work on haunches! Brava AMELIA encore!

perfect description, I was having trouble understanding it how my teacher was explaining it- this exercise really helps my quarter horse collect better in the canter- he loves to lean on the forehand

Thanks Amelia! I love this video, it’s such a good explanation. The only question I have is, as a less experienced rider, what cues- visual or what am I feeling- let me know that I’m riding these correctly? Eg how do I know I’m not taking the shoulder too far off the rail, or how do I know I’m not over-bending? What do I see, what do I feel? Thanks again!

    Hi Amelia
Thank you so much for your videos!! I was wondering if when doing the shoulder fore, can you feel a difference thru your seat when you have the horse straight and haunches corrected?

Excellent explanation! Thank you. To clarify the active leg is the inside leg and the outside leg is a guarding leg to keep the bend, correct?

Still struggling with knowing where the hind legs are. How do you feel that? Is it just memorizing how the legs land in the gaits and then trying to pair that with movement? Or....?

I perfectly understand Shoulder-in vs Shoulder-Fore now with your video...thank you! However, I am currently learning Hunt Seat but using your courses as a guide for future riding with my horse (and I feel many aspects still pertain to good riding practices and I love your methodology). My trainer always has me turning the head towards the fence during take off and the canter then keeping it there. Can you explain why that is?

    • @cath7669
      @cath7669 2 года назад +2

In very basic terms the two most common ways riders are taught to pick up the canter are 1) turn the horses head outward (toward the fence) and cue with outside leg, or 2) bend horse slightly to the inside around the riders inside leg and cue with the outside leg. The first method unbalances the horse forcing them onto their inside shoulder causing them to 'fall' into the canter on the correct lead. The second method correctly balances the horse which allows him to use his outside hind leg to push off the ground to initiate the canter and bring their inside hind leg forward on the correct lead. Your instructor is teaching you the first method which is still common among Hunter/Jumper riders, but is not correct and will hinder your and your horses further development on both the flat and over fences. I learned the same way as a young rider and eventually had to unlearn it, along with lots of other bad habits.

what benefits to the horse are being ridden behind the vertical? curious

    • @AmeliaNewcombDressage
      @AmeliaNewcombDressage  8 месяцев назад

The goal is to always have your horse in front of the vertical and helping them using their body correctly.
