Never knew there was so many ways to check for bent limbs... stuff like this really highlights your depth of knowledge in the sport (as if it wasn't already apparent, haha) the arrow trick was a new one for me, really liked that one!
What fun that you bring this up. I filed the tipp of my limbs when I started 42 years ago. But not because i notise that the limbs were bad. But i notise that the tip was poorly made. Today I am an archery trainer. I am a furniture maker and workshop mechanic. When I was at mechanic school, there was talk that the file would be destroyed on the backwards movment
Today we know its not realy true. Tests have been done and the file will not be destroyed. There is a nice youtube movie that shows this. ruclips.net/video/xbykic--SKA/видео.html. It also files a bit on backwards. And the good thing is that the file is cleaned a little on the backwards movment. Carbon fiber is so soft compared to metal to file on. So it takes extremely much to destroy a file on it. You get more control by moving the file back and forth with out lifting it. when you lift the file each time. Then you have to re-align it for each move. And it's time consuming and it makes it more complicated. But you have dawnward pressure when you move the file forward. You do not have to lift the file back, just drag it with out dawnward preassure. Now you've already made your super nice movie. But now you know until next time. Regards from Sweden
That check with the arrows is really nice, I wish I knew that before, took me a while to be sure my limb was twisted... but the problem was the riser, the face where the limb seats wasn't square... so it was crooked from the base.
Awesome video. These maintenance hints and tips are invaluable. Filed my limb tips due to string wear… screwdriver shaft wrapped in fine grit sandpaper was my solution!

I have an original Fred Bear 50lb recurve, probably 40 yrs old, that the grand kids found in the loft of the 'man-shed'.Once restrung they had to use it, even though the 'old-man' could hardly hold it on full draw.... the kids didn't have a chance. That bow has always had a bent/twisted upper limb, your 'fix' might be all we need to improve our groups, Thanks from NZ.
Very useful tips. Had the same problem with the grooves of my new winners explore CB1. Such nice strong carbon - bamboo limbs! And then what a disappointment! The string just wouldn't sit in the grooves causing misalignment of the limb tips. I followed your suggestions to use a file and now everything is OK.
Hi! I hope people still visit the comment section of this relatively old video because I have something to share. I bought my first recurve riser (and limbs) almost 2 years ago, but around 6 months into it I noticed that my limbs are not... aligned? I started to learn more about bow tuning to the point where I stumbled upon this video some time around last year. And you know what? What you said were true. Almost all of it. The tip of my limbs were kinda crooked. I tried my best to fix it. But unfortunately, the string alignment still said that something is NOT right. I tried to find more videos (which was difficult. yes, we still need more resources when it comes to tuning recurve bows) but had no luck. I even tried other ways to align my limbs without the long rod. and what do you know? My limbs look straight, but my stabilizer setup looks like it's severely crooked to the left (I'm RH). My riser was CNC-machined, I didn't think it was possible to have such a bad QC that the main stabilizer bushing ends up so crooked. I ended up selling that riser for the one I thought was better. And you know what? Still the same problem. Almost to the same degree. That takes me back to the limbs. It MUST be the limbs. AND THEN, I found something shocking. You see, I have two sets of limbs, one a #24 and another a #28. the #24 ones are from Samick, the other one from WNS. So, not exactly great quality. But the WNS one is not exactly bottom of the lineup. So I thought, there must be something I'm missing. Until one day, when I was disassembling my bow, I noticed that the BOTTOM part of the limbs, the one that holds the tiller bolt, is CROOKED. You, know, the fork-like part? Yes, that one turned out crooked out of the factory. IN BOTH SETS OF MY LIMBS. Not exactly to the same degree, but similar. I ended up doing the same thing as you did in this video to the tips, but to the bottom. and even though I sacrificed the snug a little bit. It ended up by no mean "loose", but it's straight now. aligning my limbs using beiter blocks and long rods are now a breeze. If this happens to me in 2 separate limbs set from two wildly different companies, I'm not too confident that this won't happen to a lot of you. So I hope this can be helpful for other archers, especially new ones like me.
Thank you for this one Jake! After watching it, I had a check of my limbs, and found that they were more twisted than the Hunchback of Notre Dame! So now I either have to get out my jewellers files or get a new set of limbs? Still, having had medical issues that resulted in me being only able to shoot an embarrassing 20 lbs draw weight, I am anxious to try and revive some semblance of fitness and move back up in weight! Heigh ho for better limbs! BTW, I found another method of detecting 'trouble' with the limb tips. When you unstrung your bow, check the shape of the bowstring loops. If they are a uniform shape you can relax, but if they are an odd shape, you need more formal invrstigations? Cheers buddy!👍👍👍👍👍😄😊
Thanks for the useful video. How important is this for a beginner? I am pretty new to archery and will rent limbs from an archery shop neabry, until i get better and can pull stronger limbs. Since the limbs are rental with a wooden core, it's safe to assume they will be pretty old, used and bent. Should i even be concerned about this as a beginner? I still have to improve my form and release, which will probably have stronger impact on my aim, right?
Dude! Outstanding and super practical video. I’ve got a set of ILF longbow limbs that have a frustrating twist and now I know how to approach the fix. Thank you! Also, regarding your comments on knowing your equipment is working at it’s best? Absolutely. That’s huge for the mental game, at least for me. If I think something isn’t perfect with my rig, it sticks in the back of my mind and undermines shooting confidence, whether it’s actually effecting arrow flight or not. That trick with the arrow shafts as absolute gold for a lazy, float-over day like today, nice one. Today's weapon of choice, 3.5mm (1/8th") chainsaw file. Edit: Ok, the arrows kept falling out. FML 😆The other ways definitely much easier.
Brilliant as usual.. I love the 2 arrow idea.. I would think a hamski level on the back window of the riser would verify the riser to reference the arrow twists? What do you think Jake?
Gonna try this on my hand-me-down PSE Talon. I love shooting instinct/barebows but one of the limbs has some twist to it. Would order a replacement, but finding limbs for such an older bow is kinda hard lol.
I know this is an older video but it’s still disappointing that the review video for the Sanlida X10 is now listed as “private” and no longer available. Especially since this bow is still readily available, and I have not doubt that your review was likely the best one available.
Never thought I could provide some info as I'm relatively new to archery but this little piece of knowledge isn't exactly specific to it: there are double-cut files that allow you to file using a sawing motion or diamond files that allow you to file in any direction!
Question: can you do another 36 scoring with this improved limbs? I don’t know if this fix is significant enough to get you 5 or 10% more in points. Or is it not worth doing another demonstration?
Or maybe do it privately, just to test That said, the plunger being out of alignment was certainly a more important thing than the tip alignment of the limbs

It’s one reason why “talking head” youtubers got burnt out post-YT-Ad-apocalypse. YT favour +10min content & “daily” post. 😂 They kind of ran out of things to say or make up to try out 😂😂😂

hi! you think an extra clear coat layer at the bottom of the limb (the part were it touches the border of the riser) can reduce wear on the limb surface ?? (the wear you notice on the sanlida review were the riser leave marks on the limbs)
What time s Sanlida’s response to your review and comments? It would be great for them to show they are addressing the issues, Then develop customer trust.
If you change bows (which we all do) ... the target compensation you made for bow ''A' will not work for bow 'B'.... fine tuning them like this will help enormously.
I did not know files only cut one direction. I have been using them incorrectly my whole life. I tried fixing a cheap pair of limbs that were cutting my serving. After I was done filing, I polished it up with some scotch brite. It worked pretty well. I'm surprised the Sanlida limbs they sent you had such asymmetrical tips. I have a set of their Athletics 7 limbs and my tips are perfect like they were shaped by CNC.
First thing I do is to check for a bent riser. Through the years, on beginner or intermediate bows I've seen more bent risers straight from the factory than limbs.
I usually starting with putting the limbs on the table facing each other like : (). The tips must touch each others on the same point. If not, one of them twisted.

You could use a third arrow at the base of the belly side of the limb .

I am restoring a vintage bow from the 50s that I am going to have to file on the tips on do I want to file before I seal or seal and then file

Twenty five years in archery,never seen this explained before.Was aware of twists,but always assumed warped before........

In my case i just glued some solid material on the spot where limb contacts metal of the riser to compensate twist.

Can you shoot the bow again at 70m once its super tuned?
Yes I experienced that.. The string slipped from the Grove...

Every WNS Delta F2 limb I've seen has had twist in it.
i had this problem, it was a twisted win and win carbon riser
oh, I would be that one person who tried to bend the limb in the opposite direction to try to straighten it lol
