Such a shame with Aquilani and his injury problems. His link play and passing with Gerrard and connection with Torres was quality at times. Could have been a very good player with us if not for being injury prone.
This season helped me a lot during my mourning period after my little brother passed away early that year. And I like the jersey so much that I bought for myself (well, you can see on my pfp 😬).
Pretty much Liverpool curse throughout the premier league years; build great teams and come really close to having a team which could dominate for a few years, but always sell the best players and fail to recruit capable replacements and a quality squad overall. It’s no coincidence that the first title is going to come when we’ve actually got a good squad and recruited well as we became better and better.
Alonso and Arbeloa leaving was huge, I feel that we didn't truly appreciate their qualities until they were gone. Aurelio was class too, shame he was so injury-prone.
Johnson was better than Arbeloa attacking, but Arbeloa could defend better. Xabi Alonso wasn't replaced. Signed Aquilani who came injured. Benayoun was underrated tho. Still not sure why we sold him.

I would have loved to see Gerrard playing under Klopp coaching...
After several years of competing at the top of European football, this was the season where Rafa lost his magic touch ... and the team lost Alonso and Hyypia. Too many key players had moved on, and the clubs signings continued to be duds. We wasted 20m on Aquilani, and he barely played all season. Gerrard and Torres were still pure class, but if you look at the subs benches for many matches from this season there is just nothing there ... the squad was paper thin, and Rafa seemed to have run out of ideas. Without Alonso the midfield lacked class and passing range, and without Hyypia at the back we had no defensive intelligence.
For the back, we already got agger as hypia replacement, but he barely play this season because injuries. And I agree for the midfield, what did benitez thinking for having a thought replacing alonso with gareth barry?? We know barry didnt come, and we bought aquilani instead (another failure)
Rafa did great with tha squad . He only signed glen Johnson becasue Portsmouth owned us money for crouch and he was forced to sell alonso,arbeloa,dossena and he only signed aquilani becasue Roma agreed not to pay the entire fee at one go . We paid only four million that season of the 20. Also if yiu notice at that season Gerrard and Torres apart from the start of the season barley played. Both of them missed a hell lot of matches
Sir Dirk Kuyt from 2007-2011 was so good and underrated. I think he would have scored more goals or at least as much as Torres if he was played as a striker like in the Dutch league. He was a work horse and so hardworking 100% commitment. Dirk Kuyt, Gerrard and Benyayoun combo was so good
Looking back at these highlights, I remember many fans not being happy with the Glen Johnson signing, mainly due to the price tag. But wow, he was actually good! Definitely was an improvement over playing Carragher or Arbeloa as right backs from the previous season. He would have absolutely thrived if he played in this era, or a system like Klopp's one (obviously TAA would start lol)
Childhood memories right here shame a lot of younger reds have never seen the likes of Torres Suarez Sturridge Alonso, etc brings me so much joy watching these goals again

The campaign we fell into the abyss and falling off the map of competing with the top clubs, selling Alonso felt like a death in the family. I remember a league game we lost to Portsmouth 2-0, thats when I really felt yep we are gonna struggle for top 4. We all have to remember that it wasn't just the premier league we screwed up, we absolutely tossed our champions league campaign , getting eliminated at the group stages in a group with Lyon, Fiorentina and Debrecen. We tossed our FA Cup campaign by getting eliminated at Anfield against I think Reading in extra time. The only positive for me this season as a Greek LFC fan was finally seeing a compatriot, Kyrgiakos be the first and to this day only Greek player to play for us, he had a run of good games (except when he got sent off in the derby with Everton). Torres was still a beast, scoring great goals but unfortunately he got injured and couldnt finish the season (we maybe could of won europa league if he stayed fit). But end of the day its a team game, 2009-2010 we sucked.

From his performances his heart was a red. Gerard would have had a league trophy if Torres wasnt injured. Two of me heroes.

I hate this season. Finished 7th a year after finished as runner up last season. Alonso departure. Shambles of Gillett Hicks Purslow etc. Tight transfer budget. Were in the brink of Liverpool Civil War.
We had just one world class player and sadly injuries did him and us so badly this season. Alonso, Mascherano weren’t available for us anymore. Gerrard was playing deeper but really he had passed his prime even if he was delivering everytime. Look at Spurs, Kane is Injured… Son would score. Son is Injured Kane would score.
I don't blame Torres for leaving looking at this squad worsen. Hardly replacing the high quality departures. Just like when Suarez left in 2015, the only reason people stay an extra year is Gerrard.
Nothing wrong with Liverpool's attack play neither in the 09/10 or the 08/09 season, in particular the latter, when they were only four points from the title. But you don't win the league when you concede too many goals and draw 20% of the games. Two more wins in stead of two of those 11 draws, and against teams they should beat. Players like Babel had a few very good games, but was mostly bellow par.

Very good starting 11 just a poor squad. Johnson and Benayoun both underrated in their day.

Nothing wrong with Liverpool's attack play neither in the 09/10 or the 08/09 season, in particular the latter, when they were only four points from the title. But you don't win the league when you concede too many goals and draw 20% of the games. Two more wins in stead of two of those 11 draws, and against teams they should beat. Players like Babel had a few very good games, but was mostly bellow par.
