Kung Fu Panda 4 is a 2024 American animated martial arts comedy film produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Universal Pictures. It is the fourth installment in the Kung Fu Panda franchise and the sequel to Kung Fu Panda 3 (2016). The film was directed by Mike Mitchell, co-directed by Stephanie Ma Stine in her feature directorial debut, written by Darren Lemke and the writing team of Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger, and produced by Rebecca Huntley. It features Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, James Hong, Bryan Cranston, and Ian McShane reprising their roles from the previous films, with Awkwafina, Ke Huy Quan, Ronny Chieng, Lori Tan Chinn, and Viola Davis joining the cast. In the film, Po (Black), who must find and train his successor as the new Dragon Warrior, teams up with fox bandit Zhen (Awkwafina) to defeat the evil sorceress The Chameleon (Davis).

Overall good, though I wish they had a scene where Po tries to offer Tigress the Dragon Warrior Title to make up for the past but she, to Po's shock, kindly declines the offer as she no longer wants or needs it as she wants to find her own path. (Possibly seeking her origin to obtain Inner Peace, relocating to the Panda Village, or becoming the New Caretaker of Bao Gu Orphanage.) It would have added to the theme of change.
Didn’t want to be spoiled, seeing it Tuesday but glad tigress is in the movie and hopefully the rest of furious five or am I wrong?
Shit, that’s good. You could even have it spin off into their going on a journey to find her path. I’d watch that.
@@douglasmitchum1488barely
Damn u should be the writer. Urgh. Just a short, quick scene of where Po offer each member a chance to be the Dragon Warrior is good enough. It can even be used a funny joke scene to draw out Po desperation in finding a successor but they all declined for their own personal reasons
@@douglasmitchum1488 sorry but you are actually going to get disappointed with the movie. No furious 5 until you get a glimpse of them at the end. Teaching fox their Kungfu moves. And the movie ends. Very Fast paced movie with no depth on the story at all. The only thing that stands out on this installment was the humor. Sorry to spoil this movie for you.
Sorry about the fatigue, Doug. Feel better soon
His dick's too big, hard to carry it around all the time.
It’s no problem bro
What does he got?
I kinda wish Shifu and Tai Lung could have interacted and have closure for what they both did to hurt eachother
For the spoiler villain thing at the end,
I can absolutely buy and believe Tai Lung, but Shen not really much at all and Kai shouldnt even exist
Indeed. It was hinted that Kai's very soul was destroyed with too much chi.
Yeah felt too much like awful fanservice, the kind that actually punishes you for being a fan when you pay attention.
I agree with you, Lord Shen lost his imperial birthright, his parents, and tried committing a genocide against Po and panda-kind, so seeing him bow to Po as a sign of respect was really off character for him
I didn't realize that about Kai, but you got a point. And I agree that shin deciding to drop the panda racism was a bit forced. Then again, he was surrounded by people that could kick his butt, po included. Maybe he was just trying to lay low and get out.
@@jordanyoung1437 To be fair, Shen accepted his death at the very last moment when you see him closing his eyes just before being crushed. But given his connection with Po he definitely needed more screentime.
Hope there will be a nostalgia critic review of Kung Fu Panda 4 in the future. Since Doug already review the other three.
Love or hate this movie, you got to admit, Jack Black's rendition of 'Hit Me Baby One More Time' is
*chef's kiss*
amazing
I literally listened to it while working and I've kept replaying. His voice is amazing.
Absolutely.
Dude, he is a really great singer. That song slaps. That alone convinced me to watch the movie, idc lol
TRUE!
@@johans3164 The movie comes out at the end of the month in the UK, I gotta wait a whole ass month to see it
I saw Chris Stuckmann's review on this earlier today and hearing a lot of these thoughts is telling me that I think I'll like the movie ok but I don't need to rush to see it. I'm glad it isn't bad, but it is a shame how they barely had the Furious Five in it let alone hear how the actors for two of the villains didn't come back.
Its better than the third one in my opinion and even tho its generic, it had stronger jokes than 3 so theres that
@@johans3164I agree. This is gonna be controversial but I don’t think the Furious 5 were actually that relevant to the story overall. They each play minor roles in the first movie, bigger ones in the second and are fairly irrelevant by the third (except Tigress). I get Awkwafina was not a great improvement though she could’ve been worse, but honestly I don’t need to hear lame jokes come out of an animated mantis mouth voiced by Seth Rogen. The movie wastes no time focusing on the important story and while it’s not quite as good as 1 or 2, I’d say it’s better than 3
I feel like it's okay to not have them in one movie. As long as they play a big role in the next movie. Or maybe you could have focus on 3 of them in KFP5 and then on the other 2 in KFP6, for example.
@@ThePreciseClimber Good idea 🤔.
I hope you feel better Doug! Get all the rest you need. ❤
Sorry your fatigue is back. I hope you get some rest and feel better soon. Apparently they already said this was the 4th of of 6 films. I don't know how that's going to work, but for this film at least, it wasn't as deep or epic as we've come to expect from these movies, but it's still a good time.
I hope so too.
1. I hope you feel better soon.
2. I was disappointed with the direction that they took. It feels dumbed down when compared to the previous films and the lack of the Furious Five is very noticeable.
💯💯💯
Dumbed down yeah. But i still liked it better than 3 cause the jokes are better in this one in my opinion
I'm guessing there going to be another cartoon series to bridge 4 to 5. Will proably get more of them there, using the cheaper alternative VAs
i mean is the 4th movie, there is only so much development you could do without bringing the "become a god" cliché, even if its the final one (i hope it is rather than drag it until is gets dull) is a really nice goodbye card
@lShadowdark I heard they are going to 6. Though if it helps , I think this should be looked at as more of shins first villain instead of po's fourth.
My only real issue with this movie is The Chameleon and her back story. They could have gone farther with it as it is a parallel to Po. As much as I do miss Tigress, its not their story and they are not really relevant and more and don't need to be shoe horned in. I did like how Tia lung was humbled his time dead. Didn't make much sense with Shen. Being dead seems to do something to you it seems. Also not everyone that The Chameleon pulled out from the Spirit world was a bad guy. The only 3 that I know for sure were bad guys was Tai Lung, Shen and Kai. Most everyone was just a former kung fu master.
She had potential but they didnt delve into her that much which is a shame cause i like monologue and reasoning
@@johans3164 How does that one saying go "We were on the verge of greatness, we were this close."
I also find it funny/sad that Tai Lung just kind of drags her to the spirit world.
@@ZombiedWolf thats a pretty fitting quote. Yeah. When she talk about her past, i was genuinely invested but then the movie just move on so quickly and iam like "wait wait!!". And that tai lung scene is both dark and hilarious tbh lol. A good dark joke in my opinion
I feel like the Chameleon could’ve been a really good personal villain for Po. For the other three villains - Tai lung fought Po because he was an obstacle - Shen fought Po because of the prophecy - Kai fought Po for his chi and because he was chosen by Oogway. The Chameleon could’ve been the first villain to hate Po as a person - she is a parallel to Po in that she wanted to pursue Kung Fu but was turned away just for her lack of physical prowess. She then finds out a big fat panda has become the literal dragon warrior despite his own lack of physical prowess, goes mad with anger and starts spiralling into obsession. Could’ve set up a much deeper hatred towards Po specifically whereas in the movie it didn’t feel like she cared much about him.
@@turt1100 Couldn't have said it better myself. I do like this movie but man The Chameleon just screams missed potential.
It's kind of funny that The Furious Five are reduced to a cameo in this one as the franchise has sort-of been brushing them aside all along. The plot demands that the villain take out the Five so all the pressure is on unlikely hero Po to save the day. In the first 2 movies, I was fine with that, but in the 3rd, with Po becoming a teacher, I thought it would be more subversive to actually have the Five save the day for once, but they were brushed aside once more.
@ least we still see all 7 main heroes of the franchise (Po, Shifu, & the Furious 5).
I think it was kinda necessary given that this movie is focused specifically on Po and Zhen--it was more of a "Po Solo Movie" than it was a film that really *required* the Five.
Part of me was hoping that 3 would be the ending because of how good it felt as a finale but I love this universe and these characters that I'm glad they've made another one. I do hope they make at least one more for a big epic finale with the Furious Five returning. It would be weird for them not to be there for the final film. Plus James Hong is pretty old right now. They better get a move on with a sequel and not wait 8 more years for another one
This feels almost like an Incredibles 2 or Toy Story 4 situation, where people are convincing themselves it was a good/worthwhile sequel at first, only for the slow realization to build up that it did not at all live up to its predecessors, with the holes in the writing and narrative only becoming more glaring over time
This. The movie was not good.
The difference is that the sequels you used as examples are much closer to the original movies in terms of overal quality compared to kung fu panda 4.
disagree with Incredibles 2, it wasn't as good as the first one but it was still amazing and had very little flaws and even fixed few things from the frst one
I think my biggest complaint is about the portrayal of the previous villains. The main trilogy villains are brought back, yet they don't consider a scene with the three of them interacting with the panda that defeated them, or more importantly, each other? Kai literally had Tai Lung as an amulet in KFP3, so there could've been some hostility between them. I understand they were there as a plot device for the new villain and I could accept that all three found peace after being so long in the Spirit Realm, but for all of them to just do nothing but be thrown in cages, bow to Po, and then leave, and especially for Shen and Kai to not even get voice lines (even more so as I personally feel Shen had great dialogue and energy in KFP2)? It was nice to see them again, but this felt like the bare minimum they could do, and it felt so empty and disappointing.
In the grand scheme of things, I think the movie would've been better off without Shen & Kai. Shen was more into technology anyway and Kai... didn't Kai's soul fucking explode? Didn't he double-die? :P
@@ThePreciseClimberfair but shen is better then tai lung
The movie was ok..but I think these additions would have made it better
1. Shen and Po's dad could have had a moment where shen apologises for killing his wife
2. Tai lung and Shifu could also have had a similar moment, where shifu apologises to tai lung for making him who he is
3. Finally, Kai having a moment with Po acknowledging Oogway made the right choice
I stand by only the 2nd addition. The rest are pretty darn awful in my opinion
Ehhhh to much unnecessary redemption
Shen and Kai are irredeemable. They accepted and internalized their selfish evil
Tai Lung is the only one whose story is actually tragic for him. They used him, trained him to death, all for a prize that they rescinded in the end for basically no reason and he snapped. What he did was evil but Oogway and Shifu are to blame as well.
@@TulpechaidoplaysMC thats logically incorrect, nobody is irredeemable especially shen who actually swanted to die, he clearly cared
@@TulpechaidoplaysMC shen was also tragic,
'We don't know whats wrong' can be one of the most annoying parts of chronic illness. Thanks for the review Doug! Sending good vibes.
Dude, that last comment was 100% right I have had multiple chronic illnesses for the whole of my 46+ years on this earth and it sucks monkey balls and not in a good way, but I hope you get your specialist soon. I know how hard that can be. I think I saw one of your crew last October in downtown Chicago in a building for the lifetime medical Associates on Jackson Boulevard in a brief glance from the lobby when I tried to go in the hallway to find them that was a failure and addition it could’ve been either or one of the three girls, I had a brief glimpse. Sorry if I can’t memorize everybody’s faces… now onto the business of show. Here’s the bottom line: having gone to my local in Elgin kids, film winter series and them playing the exact same trailers in the exact same order for all nine weeks from the first week in January until like the first week in March I watched kung fu panda four trailer with the IF trailer and the Garfield trailer and a whole bunch others like robot dreams changing out after one of their movies actually got to the theater in time, but essentially having seen the kung fu panda four trailer, it reminded me of when me and my father saw Scott Pilgrim versus the world, one of my least favorite movies because of that last fight pissed me off to no end…. In any case you should’ve let me know have not seen the film yet if the preview matched the movie in other words, if I liked the preview would I have liked the film and if I thought I hated the preview to repetition by having it been beaten into me like beating a dead horse with a bad joke in a movie, would I have liked the film and such… feel better, Doug, I know, I can’t, I keep getting weaker and weaker and weaker, but, oddly enough, just when I want to give it all up, my mom turns on my RUclips, cranks on an NC video, “clockwork orange’s” the hell outta my eyes, (even she AND my “whole” family hate the character of NC, (for good reason…)) once they hear me “bursting” out laughing uncontrollably, my “energy bar” starts to get refilled and the “video game” that is my life gets to go on and on and on…(like the energizer’s bunny, somebody recently mentioned to me…) Dan aka…ps feel better, Doug, and rock out hard after you do, and, when you do rock out hard in celebration of your “temporary” good health, please do that with the song from the end credits of scream 6(I’m STILL alive, the movie version, NOT the radio one, ok?)!!!!🥹🥰😭
I watched the Kung Fu Panda 4 movie and it was good. Although there some missed opportunities they could have added in the movie like in Spider Man No Way Home🤔.
1. The Furious Five joined in the final battle
2. Villains of the Past fight Po one last time.
3. Tai Lung Redemption Arc
4. Zhen buildup
5. The Chameleon Backstory
I’ll give this movie a 7/10
That’s about the same ranking I’d give it. Also, finally someone else noticed the similarities to Spider-Man No Way Honey! 😂
You pretty much hit all my thoughts though I’d almost place this as the second best but that’s mostly coming from my disregard for the 3rd (plus a lot of those spin-offs that followed) and the first one being so vanilla to the sequels. In fact, when I came home from seeing 4, I rewatched 2 and was amazed at how well it held up. There’s also a feeling that 4 is the chef’s salad of the series as many plot beats seem to mirror the others like going to some city, boat ride where two characters get some personal things off their chest, both of Po’s dads tagging along, a scene where someone is interrogated in a jail cell, dead villains coming back with a vendetta, big emphasis on Tai Lung, Po having to step up to a new role that he doesn’t quite know how to do, rallying a bunch of misfits as an army… You get the point.
There were some moments where the comedy was inconsistent though still hilarious but at the same time, my mind couldn’t help but think MCU and it’s problems particularly with the blood moon bit but the fact it gave me moments of pure comedic bliss saved it.
I've only ever seen the first one, but 2 and 3 are on my to-watch list, despite 3 being dismissed as "too kid-friendly". And I saw that Shrek 5 is in development. Hollywood is, as always, mired in "sequel-itis".
Jeffrey Katzenberg envisioned five sequels for KFP back in 2010. It's not a new thing.
We can blame Hollywood for sequel-itis, but audiences are also responsible for that by not going out to see original movies.
Ooooh, I can assure you Kung Fu panda 2 is an amazing sequel, it’s the only animated film I can say is better than Puss in Boots 2
@@rckblzr Part of the problem is how few good original movies come out these days. The majority of the "original" movies that come out tend to be the same tired plot points and characters we've seen a thousand times before, just with different names. There's exceptions and some of those do get a fair bit of recognition, but it's hard to put too much blame on the audiences when Hollywood is unwilling to take many chances on actually new properties or ideas.
I read an article a long time ago (like 2010-15) that they were planning on making KFP 6 movies total. I didn't believe it until the KFP4 trailer popped up
If you're wanting a official ending vibe, ig we'll wait to see if we get to #6 or just watch the third again since it's the end of that chapter
Man the fatigue must suck. I’m glad you were able to do a review for this and one that is easier for you
the 1st Kung Fu Panda was a masterpiece. It's my favorite of all of them.
I definitely felt the absence of the Furious Five in this, they’re like the frosting on a cake for me. And instead of having the fox as the one Po offers the Dragon Warrior I think that being Tigress would have given this film the emotional complexity the other films had, knowing how badly she wanted it. It would have been a nice 360 for the franchise. Overall though other than those things it’s still a solid film.
The thing is , tigress is kinda of above the role now. Like Po she is likely due to transition to a teacher roll, likely taking over for shifu if I had to guess. The dragon warrior should be someone younger, with a journey still yet to travel.
Kung Fu Panda 4 spoilers
I like how even Tai Lung accepted that Po was more worthy than he ever was to be the chosen as the Dragon Warrior 🐉 . Even bowing before him alongside his other enemies as a gesture of respect. Just shows that he wasn’t PURE EVIL deep down.
Something I would have loved, that would have also made the ending with all the villains somewhat better is if they spent more time with him learning how he could have faced his old battles without violence. For example in their fight having the Chameleon transform into Tai Lung for a longer duration, but instead of just fighting Po gives wisdom on how Tai Lung could have redeemed himself while he was watching their fight. I think they did that with the prior three villains in their fight before she transforms, I think it would have played more into the theme of being a spiritual leader instead of just a warrior, while also giving Po a reason to have earned the respect of every prior villain. It's one of those things that wouldn't have changed the finale too much, just adding a few more minutes of dialogue before they get into the actual fighting.
I hope you will eventually do a NC video on the “How To Train Your Dragon” franchise.
I haven’t seen “Kung Fu Panda 4” yet but if I had to rank the others, it would be “Kung Fu Panda 2”, “Kung Fu Panda 1” and then “Kung Fu Panda 3”. I suspect the 4th one will take the 4th spot.
Its actually a LOT better than the third one in my opinion. Its genuinely funny and gorgeous. But its nowhere near 1 and 2
I fully agree
Honestly I liked it more then 3. Not to say it doesn't have some flaws, it does, but it didn't bastardize the series like some sequels do, it still has some high energy action and it isn't retreading the same story.
@@danielgibson3422 I agree, after seeing it I didn’t think it was any worse than 3. They are about equal. It was only disappointing that Lord Shen and General Kai didn’t have any lines.

Tenacious D reference, right?
Hope you feel better Doug! Get all the rest you need❤
Sorry about your fatigue. You don’t have to push yourself so hard for the fans. Just get plenty of rest and we’ll be here for you.
Teared up when ping gave po the speech about accepting change, that was definitely a highlight for me
One of my favorite tropes in animation/puppetry is “a fish out of water can never *really* be out of water” so Ronnie Cheing’s character has a special new place in my heart.
Feel Better Doug
Take her easy Doug... I don't know about anyone else but I take comfort in Doug's reviews. It's good knowin' he's out there. The Doug. Reviewin' these movies for all us subscribers..
The Doug abides. 😂
Yeah, I actually prefer these to his nostalgia critic reviews
Please get better soon, Doug. Your health is more important.
KFP is one of my favorite animated moves series, so I was really worried about this one. Sounds like it's about what I could have expected though. A fun film but not a needed one. Thanks for the review.
I saw the movie today on Friday, it was great. I wish Po should've had had choose Tigress as the Dragon Warrior to make it up to her. Tigress said no Po and she asked Po to choose someone else to take his place as the Dragon Warrior. I wish Tai Lung come back to the Valley Of Peace to make amends with Shifu and bond with him again.
That could work as a fanscription episode.
Mr Doug. Ive been a genuine fan of your content for years. Your comedy has helped me through a lot in the past and i really appreciate what you do❤🤘. I hope you feel better soon man. Channel awesome is awesome. You're awesome. Stress less and stay positive.😃🤘
I would’ve like to see at minimum, Tai Lung and Po teaming up to fight The Chameleon.
Slight spoiler*
I was fine with Tai Lung being more accepting of Po. Since he was sent to the Spirit World, he probably had time to reach enlightenment. I don’t see Shen doing the same, and wouldn’t Kai be nonexistent since he kinda exploded in the Spirit World? Even without that, wouldn’t Kai start doing his Chi-stealing again? Kai and Shen shouldn’t have been in this…
This is Fanservice: The Movie.
Shen has moments in 2 movie, but he feel that go to far and is no way back to him.
Shen I feel accepted his fate at the very end, he killed himself, and he knew it. If Tai lung can accept his defeat, I think Shen could also come to understand his own failings.
Kai is an odd one, but he did have his power stolen upon his arrival (If he evenstill had it after 3), and there isn't much point in trying anything with Po right there...
Needed more Ke Huy Quan
I just hope this movie doesn’t completely ruin Po character, I hate this trend in modern day legacy sequels we’re they take the beloved main character and completely destroy them, either make them into fools like Luke Skywalker and Indiana Jones, or turning them into a complete dumbass like Wreck It Ralph, Buzz Lightyear and recently Megamind.
Po character is still the same but matured more
Thankfully Po isnt ruined and theres a good balance between him and the new fox lady kicking ass so ure good
@@johans3164 they gave the fox lady flaws to
@@devonrichardson6150 exactly!!! Usually these new legacy characters are always seen as flawless and know better and if they have flaws, it gets ignored by the plot. But the plot actually address her weakpoint and flaw and how she is better and worse than Po. She is a pretty gold character i think
@@johans3164 I think so to
8:09 I think I buy Kai giving Po some cred since he already registered Po as a worthy threat, and he WAS Oogway’s best friend so he probably does respect warriors enough.
Shen, I noticed, gave the least amount of bowing. They should’ve given him and Kai a bit more focus, but Shen should’ve looked pensive about whether or not to bow, and then just give a quick one as a quick thanks at the most.
You should bring back Dreamworksuary.
I can’t wait to see this movie when I get the chance
If you have had long term Covid, you may have cardiac arrhythmia or myocarditis. It happened recently to someone I know and they too were perplexed by the fatigue and breathlessness along with a period of reoccurring fevers. But many doctors dismiss it because he didn’t ‘fit’ the qualifications. Push to check for it or a second opinion. If untreated could lead to permanent damage. He was lucky one doctor insisted on admitting for observation and running the needed tests.
Sorry to hear about the fatigue. Hope you get better.
LOVED the movie! Great addition to the franchise. Hope you feel better doug. Wish You all the Best
I really loved this one tbh!! Granted, I love all of the Kung Fu Panda movies tbh. I actually really liked that they had all the villains bow to Po near the end since it gave the villains we’ve seen before a nice ending and nice character arc/growth! It also made me love Tai Lung as my favorite KFP villain!
Also, I hope the fatigue gets figured out! It seems difficult to deal with sometimes. Take care of yourself, Doug!
It may be a tad derivative of KFP2&3 (big city, tyrant-type villain, Po not wanting the new teacher/leader role) but overall it was really fun.
Seeing Po's dads interact more was nice, the action is top-notch and Zhen was done surprisingly well, I thought. I was worried it was gonna be a Star Wars Rey repeat with the writers trying too hard to make us like this "badass" new character but no - she doesn't overshadow Po, her character arc hits the proper beats and she doesn't even automatically become the Dragon Warrior at the end - she merely starts her training.
So yeah, good movie.
I agree with a lot of your thoughts except for Aquafina's performance. I thought she was great the entire time, but that's just me. It was definitely predictable, but in all the right ways. It was done right with the emotions and characters that I didn't care that it was predictable. I also liked the next step in Po's character in passing on the tortch as Dragon Warrior and having to accept change is inevitable and if you fight it, what you had might not remain special. I enjoyed Zhen as a character and liked how Po and Chameleon are a like in that people underestimated them based on their appearance.
If there is a fifth film, it be great if they draw parallels from the other films with Po training Zhen. Like from 3 when Po's first teaching lesson went terribly and then geese were questioning what Oogway was thinking. It great if they have something similar where Zhen first mission as the Dragon Warrior goes bad and people start questioning what Po was thinking. Then we see Po talk to Zhen in a similar way that Shifu did right after about making her into her and not him. That would show Po has truly become the next Oogway and Shifu, while also giving Zhen a good story as we see her go through what Po did in a slightly different way. This will give them a good balance for the film.
I honestly was surprised cause i thought she would be annoying af but she actually did a good job, thank God
Finally, a good review that doesn't go on trash this film.
Agreed, I watched a few where it felt like they thought this was some kind of an abomination of a film.
I won't say it was the best in the series, but it was a fun time with good moments, that didn't bastardise the whole series like some sequels we get now days ...
Does Doug know they’re actually called the Furious Five but just calls them the Fearsome Five because he feels like it or…
That aside, I might check this one out.
Nah it's just misremembering.
Brain fog from fatigue of the shingles, give him some flack
@@lordofscarlet Oh yeah I’m not judging too hard. He’s just always called them that and I was just wondering.

@@hughbathurst731 Only in this review with said fatigue. He correctly calls them the Furious Five in the NC review of the trilogy. Either way, we know what he's talking about so Task Failed Successfully
I haven't seen _Kung Fu Panda 4_ yet, but I still would like too. More-so after hearing your Review of it. I enjoyed the previous three greatly (particularly KFP2), so have been looking forward to seeing KFP4 since it's announcement.
While I get it, I am still disappointed that the Furious Five aren't involved. I feel at least like Tigress always deserves a Role in the KFP Movies. Plus, since "Tai-Lung" is back, it feels like a missed opportunity to not have a Duel between the two considering their history/connection.
Also, KFP4 isn't the Finale... Apparently, after the success of KFP3, the plan is for Six Movies in the Series.
Anyway, I enjoyed this Review, Doug. Hope you get to feeling better. Take care! 🙂
P.S. I'm curious what's on his shirt. Anyone know? It's driving me crazy! 😆
11:35 Should we tell him they are making a fifth one 😳
I feel like they should continue it just so we have one epic finale with all the main characters
I don’t think that’s been officially announced yet, just that they said they’d like to do another one.
@@rckblzr it’s still a possibility because we need a proper sendoff for this franchise
Honestly, the movie encouraged me to watch the next trilogy, 1-3 were about Po as a student, so 4-6 will be with him as a mentor.
I feel Kung Fu Panda didn’t need a fourth movie! It had a solid trilogy and wrapped up all the movies the same way Toy Story trilogy had. But at least the fourth movie isn’t bad and I would still recommend this movie over the recent Pixar movies since Onward. Dreamworks Animation is at least putting effort into their animated movies than Disney Pixar which have been duds like Strange World, Turning red, and Wish!
Saw this yesterday, I thought it was pretty good. Not as amazing or stellar as the first two, but still good. The action was nice, I liked the jokes; they were funny. Some scenes were delightfully pleasing, and I think it could’ve benefitted from only one or two minor adjustments to the script (as opposed to major script re-writes).
I was really worried this one would be the “bad” one in the quartet (like Toy Story 4 or Shrek 3), but no. it’s a very solid animated quadrilogy.
HE'S HERE WITH THE VIDEO
Get well soon Doug!
I hope your health improves Dough. Be kind to yourself! Recuperate!
From what I read in high school, there are still 2 films left in the franchise. I grew up with Kung Fu Panda, and really loved the second one. Third was a meh on jokes but storyline was good. Can't wait to see the fourth.
God I really hope you feel better soon Doug
Get well soon!
Also, regarding the end:

I don’t think it’s crazy Ti-Lung bowed to Po considering his anger in the first movie was directed toward Shifu, Po was just the recipient of it and a reflection of why it was frustrating. The entirety of the final battle in the first movie was for a majority him trying to get the scroll, not necessarily to kill Po.
The others were straight up antagonistic though.
I don’t know why but I believe that the Chameleon could potentially be the Davy Jones of the franchise being so great of a villain that to try to put all of her past and present, her motivations, what she is truly capable of
Maybe she is the kind of villain who learns from her mistakes and tries a better strategy and motive
Maybe she’ll find a way to return from the spirit realm to truly make her seem like she is a combination of all the other villains
Maybe the whole point was to have a new character so that the Chameleon has character who is connected with her
It’s just a theory that has the potential to be completely wrong
tbh with that ending scene I kinda saw it as: Only a few of them we KNEW were bad guys (example we saw Master Rhino in there and we know he was good, Shen was the one who killed him). Only Tai-Lung, Shen, and Kai were bad. And if they had caused anything, there was a literal army of kung fu masters to back Po up. So... frankly I think it was smarter for them to just protect their asses as feign honor. Although who knows, from Tai-Lung at least it could have been somewhat genuine. He did a lot of what he did out of anger, but overall he WAS still raised by Shifu and he's had time to reflect maybe? But even that is reaching and he may have just wanted to get revenge on Miss Chameleon where no one would try to stop him (Po is too nice to let him beat the shit out of her)
I feel like only Shen would rebel cause we seen Tai Lung willing to respect Po and i think Kai the type of person to accept his fate if it happen. Shen tho prob be like "yeaaahhhh i dont want my ass get kicked so imma do nothing" LOL
I was looking to see this review and I'm very happy to see we came to think the same about the movie :D
Besides that hilarious rendition of Baby One More Time by Jack Black, the overall journey is just fine, very harmless, it’s unfortunate that it’s very predictable from the beginning to end, as a 4th film it does stick out a bit badly, but it’s admittedly very enjoyable and entertaining to watch, Jack Black, Viola Davis and Akwafina are very good, and the action sequences along with the animation are great, its main problem is that the depth is missing
Funny thing to mention is that Aquafina took off more than Sarah Silverman in Wreck It Ralph. Both of them have... distinct voices. 😁
Hope you feel better soon Doug. Be safe man

Yeah, what they did with the villains at the end, I find was a reaction made kid friendly/ a kid's limited understanding of how treacherous a villain can become, and I was picturing in my mind how it might go realistically, which would probably still not achieve the desired outcome realistically. And I was also reasoning that the villains' time had passed so maybe it might have worked out the way it did.
I found this movie to be the weakest of the, Kung Fu Panda movies. But that being said. It's still a good movie. The action is still really good, probably the best in the franchise. The comedy is still pretty good. The animation is MAYBE the best in the franchise. And i know im in the minority here. But i was NOT mad at the absence of the furious 5.
I would also say the villain had more reason to be evil then Kai did. She felt like a good dark mirror of Po.
It’s not a grand finale. Of course it isn’t. There will be two Kung Fu Panda movies after this one.
The only villain that i really didn't get at the end was shin. The rest i could see doing what they did, but not him. Also, there are 2 more movies planned, hence why it didn't feel like a finale.
I'm going to go see it. Wasn't sure I wanted another movie. But I'm not afraid to give theaters some support; and especially not after hearing your review.
After seeing the movie. We saw in the movie that Tai Lung gradually grew to respect po.
And with po technically freeing him twice now. From Kai and the Chameleon. He would have to have some kind of slow build respect
Lord Shen we saw at the end of 2 he fully accepted his death. He could have kept fighting to spite po but he just let himself go. And a dark thought I had, since we see Kai and Ooguay go to the same place there is just one afterlife. Shen would have finally been with his family in the afterlife. Only for the Chameleon to take him from his peace. Po saved him and let him go back to his peace
Po was the only one to remember Kai actually existed. He even says in 3 that he was disappointed in killing him. And with his weird might makes right seeming way of doing things. And knowing that he couldn't handle the Dragon Warriors Chi. He would have some small respect for Po. Which would have gotten larger seeing Po defeat all of the combined strength of the masters. Also with Po having the staff to throw him back to the spirit world if he did anything stupid is a good behavior check.
My opinion: the movie is not good enough to watch it again, but good enough that you don't dislike it.
I’m gunna go see this on Monday
I got the impression with the ending of the villains bowing that they had time to reflect and learn about Po in their time in the spirit world/death. And it kind of portrays the spirit world as a place that changes and perhaps even heals you to an extent. It's not said but that was what I drew from it. However, without an explanation given from the film I can see people being put off by this.
Overall, I found this to be rather good. I was a little worried with Awkwafina because if she's told to adlib a line sometimes her voice can be annoying. But no she was actually pretty good here. Better than Raya anyway. Although, tbf Raya had way more issues than Awkwafina's performance.
There were some additions I didn't like, like the talking head bubbles. That was not funny and got annoying very quickly. And some transitions were done awkwardly. But there was just enough set up and pay off to make the last third enjoyable.
I do think there can be some more but they need to hit with a REALLY heavy step in Po's journey. And I think that needs to be preparing for the fact that his master will die. Shifu is quite old. I can see him potentially in a sequel saying that it's his time to ascend like Oogway did and the journey Po has is learning to accept a world where he no longer has spiritual guidance from his master and has to still train Zhen who can have her own arc. And then eventually in the last film he'll do with Zhen what Shifu done with him and get a successor. Perhaps she'll form a new Furious five because the others die or are killed.
I'm going dark here. But I feel like Kung Fu panda can pull it off. IF they put sone more money into the film. This had the lowest budget of the films and it definitely shows. So, we need some more moneybso it doesn't feel as empty.
I think this movie is another example of how high of a bar Puss In Boots 2 set.
It didn't live up to it.
Might be me but this feels like how the Shrek movies were like.
What I mean, as I rank them by this:
1. Shrek 2
2. Shrek
3. Shrek Forever After
4. Shrek the Third
It's kinda what I've been reading on reviews, and I still plan to watch this when I ride to the theaters when there isn't rain in my area.
Again, that's me and I could believe it, but who knows when I go see the fourth movie.
Don't you dare compare Shrek 3 to any of the KFP movies (or other Shrek's too)
fanscription of kung fu panda 4
the plot: po vs the man ray was a flash back.
its been 4 decades since the third movie po is 60s he's geting to old to be the dragon warrior. and shifu is dead
the opening the chameleon shape shift into tai lung shen & kai to scare the minors
the Chameleon backstory. Change the motivation to a genuine but twisted fascination with kung fu, and her absorption of others’ abilities be her “easy way” of skipping all the way to master. This way we have a clear relationship to Po: she is a dark reflection of the fan he was before being picked by Oogway, but instead of having a great destiny to fulfill and good teachers and father figures to look up to, all she had was a perverse ability she may even had hated about herself until she was desperate, maybe living in poverty and alone. This would make Po question if he would have been the same as her had their roles been reversed, realize the importance of his support system, and strengthen the message of teaching the “right way” to future generations.

With the rest of the Furious Five not being as much involved like before. I'm a bit hesitant. Also, sorry about the fatigue, Doug. Feel better soon and hope the right specialist can help with it.
I'm imaging a Kung Fu Panda 5 where Zhen is the main character and Po shows up only at the end to help (maybe opening the spirit realm releasing Everyone for an Avengers Endgame moment), Zhen beats the final boss and is fully recognized as the new Dragon Warrior.
Doug, I realize that nobody "asked" for this 4th movie, however Dreamworks has stated that they had planned 6 movies for Kung Fu Panda.. I thought this one was pretty good...and yes, the furious 5 only had a cameo, however THIS particular movie was not really ABOUT them.......and I hope you feel better!
I kinda wish he would review the dragon knight series. despite its clear lack of animation budget its pretty entertaining.
Tai Lung conceding and saying that Ooguay made the right choice seems like a very "martial arts villain" thing to do. In the first film, he was evil but more Neutral Evil. He wasn't trying to conquer the land or anything. He just wanted the Dragon Scroll because ultimately his true goal is to be the strongest in Kung Fu. His villain arc is enacting revenge on his school for "robing" him of his "destiny" that Shifu made him believe he was destined for. Tai Lung first hand witnessing why Po was chosen and while he may be evil, he is still a his core, a martial artist.
It honestly could've bee how it was presented. I think had it been him walking into the gate and looking over his shoulder and saying it would have been more personal.

I legit just saw the ads for this. I had no idea it was out lol
I mean we still have the fifth and sixth movies to get to. Apparently there were six movies planned ever since the first movie.
I get what you mean Doug. Even in the first 3 movies only Tigress was super needed. Monkey and snake could have been removed as characters entirely from these movies and we’d lose nothing but cool fighting visuals.
I saw Kung fu Panda 4, and I like it
Can’t wait to see this come out in Ireland at the end of the month.
Supposedly the idea is that there's going to be 6 of these, so I'm guessing this is basically the start of a second trilogy that will play out to an actual conclusion (depending on how much money they keep making, at least).
I watched this review and a few others that were similarly unimpressed with the film, but, I gotta say, I had a lot of fun with this! The comedy, animation and characters were good. In particular, I liked the chameleon, Po's two dads and Zhen (the fox girl voiced by Awkwafina).
My only 2 complaints were the lack of he furious five and I wish the emotional moments were better.
I would have liked to see more interaction between Po and Tai Lung, but that might have taken away from his wrap-up with Xin.
