  • Hull has been named the UK's city of culture 2017, the second to receive the title after Liverpool in 2014. As part of the celebrations a projection has been created named Made in Hull which looks back on the Cities rich history. In this video we see the part of the projection which simulates a second world war bombing raid over Victoria Square and the City Center. Hull was one of the hardest hit cities during the Blitz period of the second world war, although this part of the cities history is often sadly over looked in favour of cities such as London and Coventry which where also flattened by the Luftwaffe during the war.

And after all that the people of Hull got up the next day and went to work, school and shopping. They really were the Greatest Generation.

That's really interesting. I feel like the effect would have been even better with some fireworks to look like anti aircraft guns and planes exploding.

it was a sad time in WW2. but the British held their own and managed to get the Royal Air Force up to fight near the end of the Blitz, which caused the Luftwaffe to retreat bak to mainland Europe

Still why must the civilians be punished for the decisions of war from politics?

@@oliviamann556 many important industries were located close to civilian houses in London. I think at first the Luftwaffe and RAF both tried not to hit civilians, but at one bombing raid the RAF accidentally hit a residential area. Obvs Hitler didn’t know this wasn’t on purpose and ordered the bombers to just not care about civilians.

I guess that whole, memories may be genetoc thing actually may not be quite so BS after all. Being an Australian of 1998 birth i only have a connection to ww2 through bloodline and my passion of studying history...
Yet when that first bomb came whistling in i found myself tearing up, when those sirens started my hair stood on end and i had a shiver in my legs that went up my spine.
My grandad, as an 8 year old, would pull a little red wagon through the streets of london after bombing raids, collecting scrap metals from the wrecks and rubble...
At one point his family had hidden under a staircase during a raid, and in the morning they crawled out, and there was an unexploded 500kg bomb half sticking through the roof over the staircase...
When mum was a kid, an ammunition factory several Kilometers from her town suffered an accident that resulted in the underground facility becoming an orbital one...
The shockwave from the facility blew doors and windows in on nans house and she threw herself under the table screaming "their bombing us again!"

This would have been interesting for young and middle aged people to see - a theatrical experience as they stood in the square and watched this simulation - but it would have possibly been traumatic for old people standing and watching on that night in 2017. Many would had the awful memories of the Blitz reawakened as they watched. As many people actually died in that very square during the Blitz maybe it was in slightly bad taste to recreate the event right there. What do people think?
