- Lisbon, Day 1. Things didn't go as planned!
It's the first full day of our Lisbon trip, November/December 2018.
Imo heads to the fruit and veg market - Mercado da Ribeira - to see what's what and stock up on supplies, catches up on some flute practice in the AirBnB, goes exploring the waterfront around Cais do Sodre, eats a revolting looking (but delicious) ice-cream, browses around the gift shops and then heads off across the Metro to an Irish dance class with Izzy. It had all been going smoothly up until that point, but that's when it all went wrong!
Imo's trying out her new GoPro Hero 5 for the first part of the video just to see what it's like. My conclusion is, after editing this footage, that the audio is compromised if you use it in its housing, unless the camera is in a fixed/still position, as the mics (there are three) pick up every bit of resonance from the casing itself. Much of my footage done on it thus far will have presumably been unusable. What a pain! My mistake. I should have checked out the footage sooner.

I'm Imo and she's Izzy. We love getting out and about and exploring South Wales and beyond.
We're a home-schooling/home-educating family of two based in the UK dealing with the daily challenges of managing Izzy's severe, chronic eczema and her education. Our resourcefulness is tested on a daily basis but we'd love to share our little triumphs and discoveries with you as we go along.
These videos will not generally feature background music, making them extra suitable for people who aren't keen on pop music! x

Obrigada! Thanks for making me feel so welcome. X
Lisbon is a very nice place to travel! One more awesome vlog!👍👍👍
I really love it as you can probably see! Thanks so much for stopping by. x
5:55 watch out, you don't want to wind up on One Cyclist in Lisbon's "Honking Time" segment!
ruclips.net/channel/UCnVGl6cBFlKY3wSl9AD161Asearch?query=honking+time
Hahaha, I was just about to say the same thing! :D
Hee hee hee! No, that wouldn’t be good! Honking time sounds like a good public service to raise awareness of cyclist’s needs.
@@PlanetImo - The author of those videos, Miguel, went from around 700 subs to over 40K in less than a year. And it was just a hobby, imagine how it'd be like if he took his channel seriously. Unfortunately he can't because he's in uni and he can't dedicate more time to the channel. Nevertheless he uploads regularly. : )
Beakerzor 😂😂😂😂
I liked the little view of the kitchen right at the end of the video 😉
Oh no! I was trying to cut that off in RUclips editor, post upload!
LOVE markets everywhere else in the world other than the UK!!!! Enjoyed the mooch round town. Great job Izzy on the portuguese :). Great street art guys. Oh no - so sorry you got the dance class day wrong :(...
What am I like, eh? Some of the UK markets are ok too. I don’t live near any. X
Don’t worry if people can hear you. They are getting a free concert.
Ha ha! People don’t always see it that way. 😂
Holey Moley those pumpkins really were HUGE! Could you not do your practising on a street corner with a hat out, make a few quid on the side 😉😁Good on you for trying the black coconut ice-cream, always makes things more interesting, haha. That's a shame about getting the day wrong, but at least now you know for sure where to go next time 😁
Ahh, I like to practice in private, since it involves stopping and starting and going over the same bit again and again. Not really meant for listening to. ;¬) I hope we can make that class one day. Maybe next year. x
I love rental scooters. It helps me feel the feeling of skating and surfing. It's the modern-day equivalent of a Back to the Future Hover Board.
I clearly need to get out of my comfort zone and give them a go! Thanks for all the lovely comments! X
what an amazing place ..the market looks great lots of lovely food ..great Vlog just subscribed
Thanks! Most appreciated. Thanks for watching. X
I am proud of you my sweet Isabel!Eu acredito que falaste muito bem!
Ela diz ‘obrigada!’ X
I’m looking forward to seeing the rest of the Lisbon trip. The weather looks SO nice! The mattress in the tree amused me. Haha!
Yes, there was a bit of rain, but on the whole it was much better than when we went in February. X
Luv watching the sea, something very calming about it. I wish I lived by the sea. I'm near Birmingham so very built up! , glad your enjoying your trip. My daughter said the ice cream looked delicious 😀😘
That's not the sea, it's a river. ; )
Or is it even an estuary? I'm never quite sure where it stops being a river and becomes an estuary. ;¬)
Obviously didn't have my glasses on 😁😂
@@PlanetImo - That's true, it's the estuary but the estuary it's part of the river. The "frontier" between the river and the ocean is the São Julião da Barra fort in Oeiras. : )
That 🍅, it is called "tomate coração de boi", yes they are full of flavor.
Wow! A bull’s heart tomato! (I had to look up boi). Thanks for the lesson! X
The markets in Lisbon look amazing, wow! I never thought about musicians needing to practice while traveling, but I imagine that would be a bit stressful!
Yeh, practicing can be a bit awkward at times. I love that market, too. Really quality produce. X
I also love to be at the ocean side. It energizes me.
That's not the sea, it's a river. ; )
That too though! I’m magnetised to big bodies of water.
Your GoPro 5 is pretty good. Glad to see you using it.
To be honest I wish I had checked the footage before using it for about 7 days running. The audio is massively compromised by resonance through the housing which rendered 85% of the footage useless unless I was to have substituted the audio for backing track, or some other thing. I’ve vowed to only use it in its housing if it’s in a fixed position or, if moving about, pinched in between my finger and thumb out of it’s housing.
I can totally relate to practicing in other places! It's so hard to know how much other people will hear...
Mmmm! I've had people shouting at me and banging walls and all sorts in the past. How about you?
@@PlanetImo I've been pretty lucky so far - one person rang the bell and asked to sit and listen. But I think it's easier for me to play more quietly than it is for you with your flute - especially in such echo-y rooms!
very nice vlog. Ah looks so nice over there
Thanks Jeff. Yes, I love it. I wish I could live there permanently.
The electric scooters are super popular in cities in Spain too!
Great! It looks like ther're springing up everywhere. I suppose I'd better pluck up the courage to give them a go. Have you ever tried one?
@@PlanetImo Yup! They're so fun! Much faster than they look too! The one I rode apparently had a max speed of 25 kph!
Though I'm quite tall and heavy so it didn't quite manage it haha!
They're also pretty compact and lightweight, so I can see why people in cities like them!
Cool! x
Nice Day 1, thanks for taking us round Lisbon and showing it’s many sights! Quick question, are you using an external microphone for your GoPro? The audio sounds really quite good, the sound we get out of our GoPro is never good so we’re thinking of a purchasing some sort of microphone. Thanks 👍👍👍
No - it was the first time I'd used it, during this trip and 80% of the audio was unusable - REALLY bad. Three problems. 1) Wind noise, which was my fault for forgetting the fluffits. 2) as I switched it on each time, if took a few seconds to find its equilibrium and so the sound changes as the start of most clips. 3) Resonant noise from the housing. That was just ridiculous - I can't believe they've got away with that. I stupidly did not test the camera out before using it for almost two weeks before reviewing the footage properly. Much of it so far has been unusable so I've had to be very creative with the editing. I'm still using the Song Handycam if it's dry.
My plan for the GoPro is to take it out of its housing altogether for mobile shots and clad it with three little fluffits over its three mics. I've figured out a way to hold it out so that I don't touch the mics. It's a wide angle lens enough I should still be well in shot. I think it should be OK if it was on a stand and not moving. But I may well look into external mic options. For now, it's my wet weather and arty shots camera. x
Imo and Izzy Vlogs Yep, similar here, visually the GoPro is stunning, but overall we have been disappointed with the audio. If we come across a decent external mic, we’ll let you know 😀👍👍👍
that mud pudding looks yummy! 9:38
It wasn’t the most delicious ice-cream I’ve ever had but it was pretty nice. X
I would love to go Lisbon one day! Looks like a beautiful city to explore and discover. And it looks like it has a pretty good subway system too, with the Metro! Is Lisbon very walkable?
Beautiful city indeed, specially with blue sunny skies. Lisbon Metro coverage is ok but not fantastic, some parts are not served by it, specially the Belém neighborhood, the one close to the sea. But we got trams and trains..Lisbon is very walkable but it's also the hilliest city ever very muck like San Francisco and it's full of cobblestones, good confortable shoes are a must. The good thing is after a hill comes a breathtaking view...Here's teh best guide for Lisbon: www.lisbonlux.com/
Thanks for that link! I'll check it out :)
@@luismarques9280 - When it's not raining. Because it rains in Lisbon too, you know... And when it rains it's chaos, like last week.
Go Pro looks good....well if things don't go as planned....come here !🙂 🤗👍
Ooh, sounds good, Greg! Thanks ;-)
Oh noooo the rental scooters have made it there? It's almost a daily dodging not getting run over by them here. We have the social bike racks like that but also have the ride share park anywhere bikes everywhere now too.
Oh, I didn’t have any trouble with dodging. They were either on the roads or the cycle lanes. X
Be careful messing with scooter people. Trust me, I know.
I think the bombers always make a shot better sometime I give the the full screen . Go pro looks good
I love finding video bomber when I’m editing. Sometimes I duplicate them up close in the end-screen.
(Make that a plural!)
Have you ever used any of them? X
@@PlanetImo I liked the 3 plus vlogged a while with the 5 but I couldn't get over the finger sounds then I got the audio box then i got stolen . Looks good on you seems all my problems aren't yours so thats a big plus
No - I had terrible trouble with the audio. The footage you saw was the straggling & smoldering remains of what was left with all manner of cutting out bumps and knocks in the audio where there was no speech, and the removal of 80% of the footage with speech, where the banging was too horrendous or un-cut-out-able. I have since made a note of where the three inbuilt mics are positioned and deduced that the extraneous noise is coming in the form of resonance through its housing/case thingy. So I tried a little test where I vlogged with it out of its housing and the audio was 100% fine, as long as I held it so that I didn't touch the mics. I wish so much that I had realised this before using it almost daily for the best part of a fortnight. I've got a mega editing mission on now. Luckilly I only used the GoPro in the rain and Sony Handycam the rest of the time. Also forgot to put on its fluffits...
I saw people bombing your shoot. When I get people that bomb my videos, I track them down and give them a business card which says, "you may be on the next Louinator59"
They were funny, weren’t they?! I’m tempted to make an end screen section...
Octopus - were you thinking of me. I love me some octopus. The almond milk in the coffee goes well with honey.
I can’t quite bring myself to try octopus since learning they can do shape-sorter toys. The honey and almond combo, however, does sound tempting. X
Sometimes it seems like IB isn’t even with you, then all of a sudden he’s there. 😂
Yeh! I know what you mean! X
Hi Imo are you doing Vlogmas this year?
Hello, Mary. Thanks for asking. No, I won’t be doing vlogmas. It’s a bit too much for me with a young one to look after. Maybe in a few years time I will though. Thanks so much for watching. X
It´s cool your daughter is learning portuguese! Even though it is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, it is not very common for learning as a second language. Any specific reason for chosing portuguese or is it just because you like Portugal? hehehe
Ps. I like your filming of the metro stations and all the buzz 👍😉
Ah, well you see we're home educators, and as I thought it was pretty important to learn some other languages, I decided we would focus on the two 'seconds languages' that we were most likely to use - Welsh, as we live in Wales and know lots of Welsh speakers, and Portuguese, because we go to Portugal a lot and have many Portuguese friends. I'm rather hoping to live in Portugal again eventually, so it would make sense for us both to get up to a conversational level in the language at least.
I love the Metro! I don't know why more vloggers don't film it as much! Ha ha!
Nice to see you again. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
@@PlanetImo Thank you for your kind message, it is always good to get to know different perspectives on things ;-)
Looking forward to watching the rest of your Lisbon vlogs, really enjoyed watching the series you made last time you were here :-)
Thanks! I just finished the next one, scheduled for publish at 7:30pm tomorrow. It's Belém next! x
That’s way too expensive for stamp.
Bit of a shocker. The postage prices rose steeply here in the UK a few years ago. My Christmas card and gift postage bill came to £45 the last year I sent cards... it was 50p per card 2nd class. Luckily almost everyone’s on social media these days, so that is not the only point of contact any more! X
It’s like a novelty/history lesson for children to send postcards to their friends these days!
How long you in Lisbon for ?
A fortnight. X
Nearly up now, in reality, but I’ve taken two weeks worth of footage to edit, so it’ll seem like I’m here for at least another month! Ha ha ha! I’ll be feeling like I’m still here, too. Thanks so much for watching. X
I dunno.. some of the best plans are when there's no plan at all.
Yes! Agreed! X
I bet you were popular getting the day wrong.
They were both very nice about it, luckily for me. X

Congratulations, Beakerzor! x

Well if the Portuguese are anything like the Spanish then they won't notice noise. The Spanish are the noisiest people on Earth. They all shout at one another even when sitting close together.
Ahahahah, agree
We had a neighbor so bad we came good friends with the police. Not only when playing music we could but even walk down his side of the street hed make up some transpassing non sense funny now
Oh no! That sounds like a complete nightmare for you all. How miserable. X
@@PlanetImo fun now interesting topic when the family get together.
Hee hee hee! I've got a few tales about expletives shouted up at me from neighbours while I was practising my flute, but this is a family-friendly channel, so you'll just have to guess I'm afraid!
