Classic Game Room reviews SMUGGLER'S RUN for Playstation 2 (PS2) from Angel Studios and Rockstar Games released in 2000, an open world driving game where you evade border patrol in a dune buggy and monster truck!
Compete in races, challenges and drive through a storyline mode that feels like a rough draft of the GTA series. Classic Game Room Smuggler's Run RUclips review features Smuggler's Run gameplay recorded from PS2.

    Hahaha.

Andy I thought the graphics in this game looked a little too much like what I already experienced on PS1 when I played it on launch day on October 26, 2000. The long draw distance and smooth animation were impressive I must say.

Wow the memories from this game. I remember I was rooting through my PS2 games years ago and found this and enjoyed it a bit too much... I showed it to my cousin and he came over a lot and we always messed around in the free roam, we both got obsessed with the game and eventually, he bought the game for his PS2. Ahh the memories. I still have my PS2, not the game though, so I might just buy a cheap copy online just to try it again :)

Smugglers run requires skill and strategy to evade the police in later stages.
They copy you. The AI doesn't react to your movements, but actually are connected to your input controls giving them the ability to stay perfectly in your driving line once they get ahead of you. You have to in some instances drive for the police officer in front of you. They wont avoid objects on front of them.
So say a tree coming up around a corner and a police officer gets in front of you, don't swerve to miss the tree until you have drove the police car into the tree.
Each car once it reaches a certain distance becomes tethered to your controls. So if the police cat is behind you but off center to the left. You can drive then off the cliff if you hug the line.
Lots of strategy and it takes hours to master and is completely thrilling when you can accomplish the harder missions with great consistency.
    I love this game.

  • @benaiahburns4046

This is one of my favorite driving games of ALL time and I've played thousands and thousands of games. The part I like though is Joy Ride. There are just very, very few games that offer this type of immersion and coolness while just letting you drive around. One of the awesome things among many is the fact that in Joy Ride, the cars do NOT reset. Therefore, it doesn't matter where you drive on the world, that is about 6 square miles x 6 square miles, the cars continue on their path, WITHOUT resetting.
I've honestly never found a game like this where the cars don't reset, no matter how far you get from them, OR how long you take. You can also damage the cars to the point to where they can't move anymore and you can then place them anywhere you want to. It is a shame that basically no one has emphasized the FREEDOM this game offers via Joy Ride, and the LACK of freedom most other so-called free roam games give, in comparison to this game.
Moreover, at the launch of the PS2, which is when this game was released, it is AMAZING that there were TWO different tracks at over 6 miles square. Most open world games offer less than 6 total square miles, much less 12 total square miles. This game is a true and sadly, forgotten relic of just how innovative Rockstar can be. I wish more free roam games were like this today, instead of the game forgetting, and remapping memory the second another car, person, or item gets within 100 feet of the character in a free roam game.

I'm happy to see someone talking about this game, seeing as it is a childhood favorite of mine, one I still play to this day with close friends and family when we desire a bit of grab bag chaos. However, I feel I need to share some criticism, as well as a critical observation on the modern games industry, so please excuse me.
Constantly comparing this gams to GTA because of a shared publisher does a great disservice to its appeal. They are fundamentally different games with broad distinctions in purpose, and GTA does not do what Smugglers Run did, let alone better.
It feels like you are searching for a throughline to include in your script, but ultimately the sentiment comes off as putting down Flight Simulator for not being able to gun down the Covenant from Halo just because of their shared Microsoft parentage.
What aspects modern GTA has in common with games like Midnight Club and Smugglers Run and so on are pale in comparison; GTA has spited its own identity to further unite the different flavors of Rockstar's library under a single umbrella. The results of this homoginization has been sloppy to say the least, with too many elements of too many different distinct identities and niches not gelling well together and confusing the core appeal of GTA, and I do not believe that is a hot take.
Truthfully I would love to see Rockstar be willing to experiment as much as they did in the 2000's. Fun arcade driving games like Smugglers Run are nearly extinct, top of the line, well constructed and quality assured racing games are non existent in the current zeitgeist, there hasn't been another game like Bully despite its cult status, and Red Dead Redemption 2 was martyred in a lazy attempt to create a second cash cow.
Smugglers Run, in reflection, is such a refreshing experience when considering how corporate greed and an industry standard for bloated game development have led to so many games feeling overly complex, overly ambitious, overly designed, and of course overly identical. It just reinforces the addage: they don't make em like they used to. Here's hoping indie devs see what a goldmine something like Smugglers Run is and set out to create a true spiritual successor.

This game was pretty impressive on the PS2 back in 2000. Though it's probably outdated now since the release of the Grand Theft Auto games. Maybe Rockstar could make a Smuggler's Run HD with advanced physics, more missions and variety, improved controls, and of course, advanced HD/Ultra HD graphics.

It's really not fair to compare this game to GTA as it's very different. There is much more strategy involved when choosing the best route to take to the next pickup with what ever vehicle you chose. The terrain is extremely hilly and can really mess your ride up if you take them too fast. The cops do become stupidly difficult to deal with, I will give you that.
