- As millions of Americans splurge on their Black Friday shopping, hundreds of people would line up outside Shanghai Plaza businesses searching for Japanese collectibles - including Pokémon trading cards.
Owner Peter Chen operates two businesses specializing in Japanese collectibles, each with lines hours long this morning. Many patrons waited over two hours to shop at trading card and Japanese collectible store 888 Collectibles and Japanese toy and plush store Kuma Co.
With demand high, it can be difficult for card enthusiasts to acquire the sets they want, said Chen. Stores will often place limits on how many items can be purchased, but vendors can still find their inventory emptied quickly, he continued.
“They'll have a restock at Walmart and Target And, it'll just be gone. The second it’s there," said collector Abraham Davie. "So, you know, some people that work normal jobs and all that can't really get that kind of stuff. So it makes it difficult for more casual people to still enjoy the hobby.”

Stores will often place limits on how many items can be purchased, but vendors can still find their inventory emptied quickly, he continued. Some people will buy out card sellers' inventories to resell collections or individual cards, Chen said.
To prepare for Black Friday, Chen saved some inventory throughout the year, he said, with a goal to provide a card shop experience with some of the most Pokémon card variety in the world for at least a few hours.

I went to this shop when I visited Vegas in 2023, it's one of the best I've seen, prices are fair.
I wasn’t able to visit his shop until later in the day but I still picked up everything I was looking for! Definitely a miracle but his shop always has such great variety.
It’s a definite must whenever I come in to town.
These local game shops sold cards at inflated prices already and once scalpers get their hands on them prices will be even more inflated 😂
Usually card shops will try and sell close to the secondary market price, so they don’t get cleaned out by scalpers
Pigeon man knows.
I hate that theres so many resellers. It used to be fun as a kid
Resellers have been around since before we were born. Big company buys out competition to charge more.
@happyeggroll5267 it didn't used to be like this. As a kid i could get new sets at fair prices and they weren't all sold out
Little guy, it’s called inflation and demand. Both have increased. Don’t naive and quit living under a rock.
2:45 lol they cut my man off
"People with jobs cant get the cards"
Bro. You're an adult.
Save some for the kids. 😂
I’m 41 & I’m still in2 the hobby bro 👌🏻
Addictions are hard to kick.
I love Pokémon. I remember opening Pokémon as a kid and had the honor to open the first edition booster packs that now cost $800 plus. Now I open them with my son every month we go and open some pokemon packs at a card shop and now he has a collection. The only thing that sucks now is that the hobby is too expensive kind of takes the fun out of it especially for the true collectors out there.
I went to Peter's store within the first 6 months of it opening. It was an absolute hidden gem at the time. No one was fully stocked with as much rare and sought after Japanese packs / singles than he was. It was great. About a year later, RUclipsr PokeRev made a video about his store and put it on the map. It hasn't been the same since. Every time I've been back, the shelves have been dryer than the Las Vegas desert. Happy for their success though.
The selection on the weekend was crazy, it was all there
ALL SCALPERS
Correct!
gotta scalp em all! scalpemon
lol
Greed destroys everything, it won’t be long before this kills the joy for real fans
I love how everyone is only complaining after surging sparks
It's crazy and funny how everyone lies about collecting for fun. No one else collected cards when they were young. They all do it now for profit, not for the love of the game.
Facts.
"No one else collected cards when they were young" thats just false lmao i collect for fun and everyone i know does.
Beyblade, Pokemon , yugioh ruled
well there has to be demand for them somewhere if these flippers are wanting to make a profit. Seeing as this franchise is still going strong after 30 years, yes I'd venture to say they have the largest fan base of collectors. Even a ripoff game like Palworld made tons of money out of Pokemon's popularity early this year.
I personally disagree. I collected when I was a kid for fun and even now I have a binder of cards I like i intend on passing onto my kids
👌 Pokémon will always be king
Pokemon and yugioh ruled the playgrounds
I love playing the game. Unfortunately scalpers make it difficult.
Pokerev was here i remember
3 vintages and the last one had the holo
Dang that line was for japanese products?
aint no way theyre selling trick or trade for $13
Lol fax
i refuse to pay over retail
But will you pay retail when online is $15 less?
This is so awesome 😎😎 Pokémon is so amazing
Oh look, Asian Rudy from alpha investments.
Alive and well
Grown man wanting people to leave sun for other people so he can resale 😂😂😂 he probably won’t leave none himself i he had chance to get em 🤡
Based 😂
Bro's, take Spirit up to Portland drive to Super Sports Cards in Vancouver, WA. They've got cases and cases of anything you want. Show up on release for Prismatic and he'll have all you can eat, at retail prices. I went to 888 once and all they had were Battle Styles packs. That store is a joke compared to this Super Sports Cards.
Big if true😏💯
Pretty gay that grown men ruin a game for little kids
