I said the same thing when they changed it-all the schools are already hurting for drivers as it is. Now it’s even more difficult. The whole thing is way too excessive but what can you do? Chock the rear only. I guess I'm a big expert with my Google diploma, lol, but only pointing out the wrong items for clarity. I thought it was a very good instruction. Gave it a thumbs up.
Mallory did an excellent Job of clearly indicating all parts and what the examiner will be looking for. Thank you Mallory and all who made this video! God bless!
Hi Mallory, I went in today to start my skills week of learning. The first thing my bus instructor said was watch this video. It's the best school bus inspection video on RUclips. Thank you for doing such a great job. I'll be watching this video daily until I take my road test. 🙂
Thank you for the video! I’m preparing for my test, and we’ve been having trouble with failures because the agents are asking specific mechanical questions during the pre-trip, such as “What is the brake chamber’s function?” and “How does the compressor charge the air system?” You may benefit from making a companion video that describes the functions of basic components, in case that info. becomes a standard part of the testing. Thanks again! This video has been extremely helpful.
That’s wild! It’s already difficult enough learning the names of all the parts! Where do you live? We haven’t run into that in our area in Texas, hopefully they won’t start doing the same. I’ll keep that in mind for future videos.
Those questions are NOT part of the test. Anything along those lines that the examiner asks is simply to rattle you. If its not in the book, it's not on the test. Remember that. Its not exactly just to be a dick (although I'm sure being a masochist is a prerequisite to being a DMV examiner lol), its to ensure that you can keep your train of thought in spite of the distraction and continue the inspection without forgetting anything. Bus drivers - especially school bus drivers - are held to higher standards than other CDL drivers due to the irreplaceable nature of our cargo. Just say "I'm not sure how it works" and move on. You can't be penalized.
I've run into that issue three times now in Florida with inspectors asking for stuff that isn't on the exam. Our other issue is that many of these inspectors are straight up assholes that don't want to pass anyone but complain at the same time that they have to drive kids every morning because we're critically short drivers. An example would be having to say the following about the front crossing mirror: "I will check to ensure the glass mirror is not cracked, broken, distorted, or have any hazing, and that it is clean. The mirror needs to be properly adjusted and properly affixed to its mount with all hardware and free of rust. The mirror's mount must not be bent, cracked, broken, or damaged, and must be properly mounted to the bus with all of its hardware and must be free of rust." And God forbid you say you'll check the other mirror the same as the first one. If you don't say all that verbiage for both you get dinged. You can't just say that you're looking for damage. You have to say cracked, bent, broken, rusted, pitted, frayed, etc... Its ridiculous.
Thank you for the great video on passing the school bus pre trip inspection test. I took the test yesterday, after I had watched your video at least a dozen times and passed it with no problem.

I passed my test today!!!! Thank you so much for doing this video!!!! 🚍🎉 I live in Florida and the only thing different with the airbrakes test is you don’t have to test it for one minute making sure it does not drop more than two psi you only have to test for one minute making sure it does not drop more than three PSI while you’re holding down the service break. 🤗 Thanks again!!
Had a driver fail the brake test today in TX because DPS chapter 11 states the key must be in the on position, not auxiliary or accessory position. They change these requirements frequently so be sure to check your state. UPDATE, 1st part of the brake test is no longer required in TX, you do not have to wait 1 minute while not depressing the brake, the leak test is now just performed during the 1-minute hold of the brake pedal (no more than 3psi). We did fail because of the key being in AUX, but the instructor tried to catch us before we left, his supervisor stated the AUX position was fine since the brake gauges and alarms work, they gave our driver credit when we came back for completing the brake test, that being said - keep the key in ON position anyway.
This video definitely helped me. Had a tough instructor that wanted to know all the details & how each part worked. Without this video I wouldn't have been prepared. Thanks!
Great run-through! I haven't driven a school bus for a couple of years and am starting a new job next week. Needed a quick refresher and found your video. Thanks for doing such a thorough job of it! :)
Thank You so much for this video❤ I watched it over and over until i learned it and it was a huge help. I passed my exams and now have my CDL 😭🙌🏻. Again thank you so much for taking the time to make this video.
That bus looks so different to the bus I used to drive. That one had scraped up wheels (drivers hitting the kerb), scratches on the bumpers, quite often dirty (only get washed weekly by the depot), sometimes lights out (which only I seemed to report) As for the inspection, we would check the oil, the water (if not hot), tyres, mirrors, body panels, lights (all of them), wipers, horn (some didn't work), etc It was about a 8 minute job checking it over (done in our own time :D )
IMPORTANT NOTE: I have had some feedback from others who have gone to DPS recently that the proper procedure of performing the full pre-trip is to inspect the front, then the PASSENGER SIDE, then the back, then the driver side, and then on to the inside. In my video I go the opposite direction (which seems more logical anyway) and it hasn’t been a problem until recently with more strict guidelines from DPS. So I just want to let everyone know, I would hate for anyone to fail or lose points on account of that! Sorry for any confusion.
Mallory Montenegro I just assumed Texas does it differently than VA. I was wondering that when I watched it. Do you have to talk about the ABS light? Also we have to do a lamp check. (Outside lights). Your buses don’t have a cross over gate. It’s interesting to see the difference between States. DMV in Va will not let us put tutorials on You Tube. Other than that I thought you did a great job.
Jennifer Martin thank you! I don’t think our buses have an ABS light to check...? And our district doesn’t have the gates in front, some districts in this area do but it’s not required.
@@jennifermartin4415 Can't put tutorials on RUclips in VA? Thomas Jefferson must be turning over in his grave. But from a practical point of view, how on earth would they even enforce such a ridiculous regulation. Are you sure you've got that right?
Does anyone have the script they go based on when they're fixing to test you, because they did the same to me, they made me check all of the passenger side then the bottom, then they jumped to the inside to do the in cab, took me out to do a overall light check up and I went ahead and did the front of the bus while I was at it then the driver side, then the rear..., then they told me to do my safe star including my air brake test.., and you never guess while I didn't pass. ,and that's cause I called everything out when it came to my dashboard called out and pointed out all my gages, they didnt like the fact that when I said I would make sure they are all also functioning properly they said to be more specific , so they failed me because of that
@@mallorymontenegro3924 hey mallory I commented on one of your videos do you mind telling me what you think about my situation, it's under the school bus video

good morning Mrs.montenegro , very helpful videos , watching several times , i was looking for buses with hydraulic breaks. any ideas ? thank you for your helps
Really enjoyed this video, just retaking my test after about 15 years away from school bus driving. One thing I think you might have got wrong is while the steeping pump is gear driven, as is the air compressor, the steering box applies the pressurised fluild
12:38 the electrical side panel is amazing. It demonstrates how nice a design the electrical panel can achieve when you have a programmable body controller and not all relays like a Thomas Bus has.
Missed mentioning the hood latches and the rubber seals on the windshield and the doors. Also that the windshield wiper blades are secure not cracked or dry rotted or missing, but over all an amazing run.

😍😍😍 Good job !! Love your demo. I wish all districts tested the same way tho. Some districts demand abit more thorough information on parts of busses and air brake test and behind the wheel test also 😱😱😱😱😱
Excellent Pre-Trip inspection video. I currently have a Class A and need to get a passenger endorsement, so I need to study how this differs from a truck's pre-trip. I think this video is going to help me pass with flying colors. Thank you!
Hello, great job! Few thing you miss out, like make sure the hood good when open it, inside engine bay, check air hoses, and crossmember between two frames.
thank you for posting this. I just started with Tomball ISD and so I am having to learn all this. They teach it slightly different but that is to be expected. If anything, they want you to go even more in depth than you did but makes for a better chance of passing.
pcguy that’s great! I try not to go overboard because the pre-trip already takes long enough as it is and on the test you are given a time limit. We’ve had several drivers perform the inspection exactly like I did and they passed with a perfect score.
@@mallorymontenegro3924 Well I just took my first drive and sat down in the seat where I promptly split my forehead open on the sun visor. Great way to embarass myself
@@mallorymontenegro3924 Well my first drive went well. Instructor didn't have too many complains other than he didn't like how close I got to the car in front of me at a light. It went well. My background as a 18 wheeler driver sure helps. Your video helped alot too as it gave me some things to work with.
pcguy good rule of thumb is you want to be able to see the other vehicle’s rear tires touching the ground in front of you. If you can’t, you’re too close.
So FYI at 28:35 on the second section of the air breaks test when you shut the engine off. I was failed in Livingston for turning the key to the accessory position. I was told that I should have turned the key to the right instead. I passed my second go around. Not blaming you or anything, it was an excellent video. You may want to look into that for clarification. They may have just been sticklers in Livingston.
Man, sorry that happened! In January 2019 they revised the manual and it now says specifically “leave the key in the ‘on’ or battery charge position”. That being said, we’ve had several people turning the key the other direction for the test and pass. Seems like an extremely minor detail to fail a person for.
Nice video, thank you for this! I just passed the written portion of my CDL test last Tuesday, just need to take the inspection/driving portion.
Thanks!
Using This video to take my road rest 🤔 My test is in February wish me luck🙏🤞
Well....did u pass or what?
@@dougmontgomery5105 lol
Did you pass?
@@dougmontgomery5105 its like these comments go dead after a couple weeks...
Friendly maybe she didn’t pass
Thank you. I take my test in 2 weeks and am very nervous still but I’ll keep rewatching this til I get it.
Great run-through! I haven't driven a school bus for a couple of years and am starting a new job next week. Needed a quick refresher and found your video. Thanks for doing such a thorough job of it! :)
Great video Mallory! I have been preparing for this test for 2 months now! I take the test in 3 weeks. It's a lot to learn but well worth it!
Well.... Did you pass?
Thank You so much for this video❤ I watched it over and over until i learned it and it was a huge help. I passed my exams and now have my CDL 😭🙌🏻. Again thank you so much for taking the time to make this video.
DRIVING a TRANSIT BUS now to far to drive to work because of gas prices SWITCHING to school BUS great help.
That bus looks so different to the bus I used to drive. That one had scraped up wheels (drivers hitting the kerb), scratches on the bumpers, quite often dirty (only get washed weekly by the depot), sometimes lights out (which only I seemed to report)
As for the inspection, we would check the oil, the water (if not hot), tyres, mirrors, body panels, lights (all of them), wipers, horn (some didn't work), etc It was about a 8 minute job checking it over (done in our own time :D )
Just getting started in the process of learning to drive school bus. Class starts in April. This video is very helpful!! Getting as much info as I can.
Great video! Thank you. I will be watching this over and over until I take my driving test!!

Thank you for making this clear video. Are checking front:back turn signals, hi/low beam, flashers and running and brake lights part of a different inspection?
I haven't taken this part of the test yet. I've passed everything and am now going over all the info for the pre trip. Please wish me well y'all. It's a lot to remember 😅
So this is literally the last thing I need to do in order to get my yellow card! Thank you so much, all other videos are all over the place and add things we don't need. This was to the point and what I needed!!
Great video! I will be using your video for study material. I will watch this video over and over until it's time for me to take my driving test!!!
thank you for your help, I passed Texas CDL school bus yesterday!
Russell Pettitt congratulations! 🙂
I take my pretrip on February 21,2020!! You make it so easy to grasp and understand and I cannot thank you enough!! Mallory you're the best not only very attractive and smart, I have nothing but gratitude thank you so very much in advance!! :) your truly jl
Great video, I’ve watched several other videos but this one tops them all. I will continue studying this video. I know I will pass. 😊 Thank you Mallory
good morning Mrs.montenegro , very helpful videos , watching several times , i was looking for buses with hydraulic breaks. any ideas ? thank you for your helps
Your video was a tremendous help, Mallory! Of the sections I passed, the pretrip was one of them!
Alfred Segovia congrats!
Hello from Celina Tx and trying to get my CDL for Celina school buses so excited to watch your video
Hi Nancy! 😂
Really enjoyed this video, just retaking my test after about 15 years away from school bus driving. One thing I think you might have got wrong is while the steeping pump is gear driven, as is the air compressor, the steering box applies the pressurised fluild
Very helpful. I’ve been driving for 8 years now and about to take one of our drivers to take his CdL test. Having him watch this video on the way 🤣
12:38 the electrical side panel is amazing. It demonstrates how nice a design the electrical panel can achieve when you have a programmable body controller and not all relays like a Thomas Bus has.
I haven’t had any first-hand experience with Thomas buses, I like our Internationals though!
Thanks for the vid. Easy to follow. I will have my test eventually this summer. I'm a visual learner.
Missed mentioning the hood latches and the rubber seals on the windshield and the doors. Also that the windshield wiper blades are secure not cracked or dry rotted or missing, but over all an amazing run.
I start training in a few weeks! Thanks for this thorough inspection. You empowered me to feel I can do this.
Great video I’ll be watching this over and over. But I have to repeat everything about the tires and air bags on every tire.
Thank you for making this video. It makes a great difference seeing what is expected than just reading the handbook. Continued Blessings.
Marissa Griffith you’re welcome! Videos are great for visual learners.
thank you for this video .you have been incredible helpfull . greatfull.

Darn near impossible to memorize the pre trip just by reading the sheet.

Mallory's video has helped me a lot! I feel confident that I will pass!
Thank you so much for this video! This is the best one I have watched so far! 😊❤ I really appreciate you demonstrating everything and not just telling.
You are so welcome! I'm glad it was helpful.
Thanks, Mallory - hope to take my test in a few weeks for School Bus.
One of the best CDL B airbrake pretrip vids I have seen, very good brake test, helped me improve my knowledge and practical application, thanks.
Thank you very much!
Winston Smith omg! I just passed my air brake general knowledge test today 😊 I already have my passenger and school bus endorsements.. do I have to do all of this again for my air brakes?!
Thank you for your tutorial video I passed the pre inspection like a breeze. You definitely made a difference.
Andrew Oseles I’m glad the video was helpful to you!
@@mallorymontenegro3924 Do you have any parallel parking videos.
Thank God for this here!!! It was instrumental in my success
This Pre-Trip inspection video is going to help the In-Training bus drivers to learn about checking the bus before AM and PM routes
Good video, continue with the school bus training videos, good job!
I have a test coming in August, n I just hope I can remember everything I need to know by watching your video.. it's simple n easy just straight to point. Thanks!! I'll keep you posted if I pass it!!!
Fidela Soto please do!
The only problem is that.. I'm driving a School bus but not for the school district. It's for a construction worker. I still have to learn everything as if I'm going to take kids to school, which I'm not just "passenger"... You have a video for that?
Fidela Soto no videos for that part of the test yet, but when I get a chance I’ll work on it!
I didn't pass it because the examiner said that I didn't pass the engine start up when I know I did it. Anyway, my next text is September 17, I just pray to God I pass it...
Thanks for the video. Just passed my test up here this morning in South Dakota. Your video helped me review for it.
James Kruse great! Congrats!
This helped me get my Class B with my Passenger Endorsement.Thank you so much!
😍😍😍 Good job !! Love your demo. I wish all districts tested the same way tho. Some districts demand abit more thorough information on parts of busses and air brake test and behind the wheel test also 😱😱😱😱😱
I passed! And was even complimented on how good my pretrip inspection was. Thanks so much for the video!
Impressive work. School buses are a classes vehicle to have for transportation. Kids ride on them and high school students. Love that
Excellent Pre-Trip inspection video. I currently have a Class A and need to get a passenger endorsement, so I need to study how this differs from a truck's pre-trip. I think this video is going to help me pass with flying colors. Thank you!
You forgot the transmission fluid...but this is very thorough and slowly done
Hello, great job! Few thing you miss out, like make sure the hood good when open it, inside engine bay, check air hoses, and crossmember between two frames.
Mallory you the best one cause you are doing a great job helping people to get his or her CDL thank you! God bless you
Just passed... this helped so much! Thanks!
From the serpentine belt on the bus to make sure the serpentine belt is totally secure to the rest of us doesn’t mean or crash
I got my CDL Class C Passenger Endorsement studying this video thanks for posting!
thank you for posting this.
Great way to embarass myself
pcguy oh dear, live and learn! Don’t worry, all new drivers make little mistakes like that
@@mallorymontenegro3924 Well my first drive went well.
I really want to thank you for taking your time on this video i’m learning A lot I have my B license permit thank you
So FYI at 28:35 on the second section of the air breaks test when you shut the engine off.
Thank You for actually touching the parts most of these people just used pointers
I love this video. This is the first one I came to and it is great with detailed information for a super beginner. I will be watching it allot!

Nice video, thank you for this! I just passed the written portion of my CDL test last Tuesday, just need to take the inspection/driving portion.
