  • Taking a dip in the Ai Ais Hot Springs & looking over the edge at the Fish River Canyons, Namibia.
We started our journey nice and early from Windhoek. It was a long road to Ai Ais. We stopped along the way to take some pictures and get some supplies in Keetmanshoop.

From Keetmanshoop we drove towards seeheim, we took the D545 and C12 towards the Fish River Canyons.
On Route to the Fish River Canyons we had to stop at the Canyons Roadhouse! Surrounded by desert, this quirky, remote, filling station and hotel is 22 km from the spectacular Fish River Canyon.

The Fish River Canyon, is located in the south of Namibia. It is the largest canyon in Africa, as well as the second most visited tourist attraction in Namibia.
It features a gigantic ravine, in total about 160 kilometres long, up to 27 km wide and in places almost 550 meters deep.
Why is it called the Fish River Canyon?
The Fish River Canyon is the world's second-largest canyon. A canyon is a deep gorge between cliffs, often carved by a river. As its name implies, the Fish River Canyon comes from the “Fish River.” The Fish River is the longest interior river in Namibia
Ai-Ais (which means "burning water" in one of the local languages), refers to the sulphurous hot springs which are found in this area. One of the sulphur springs has its eye within the camp at Ai-Ais.
Local legend goes that the hot springs were discovered in 1850 by a nomadic Nama shepherd rounding up stray sheep.
In 1962, the spring was leased to a local entrepreneur and were subsequently proclaimed a national monument in 1964. In 1969, the springs became a conservation area and on 16 March 1971, the camp was officially opened.
It is the last day of our Namibian trip. We head back to the border at Noordoewer.
It was an amazing trip and a fantastic experience! Namibia will see us again soon!
