Another great video Gareth...love how the weather didn't deter you...favourite images ..Lady in Red at 5:35 and the couple on the bench at 3:11. Looking forward to more street photography from you. Congratulations to you and your partner on the arrival of Ellis.
Hey Gareth, thanks for featuring one of my photos at the end. Love the street photography videos. Keep em coming. Loved photos 6 and 15. Excellent framing of the girl in the doorway. I liked the fact other people were inside the shop, it adds to the story. Great stuff
I think you're beating yourself up way too much Gareth. Fantastic vlog as always and a great set of images. Not every shot has to be contrasty and creative. Capturing the people at play, shooting the leaning tower of Pisa was brilliant too! The girl with the jumpsuit really is a stand out image though as was the man in the hat looking at the statue. Excellent vlog
thanks mate.. no your right.. i do try and take a variety of styles tho.. not so fixed on one type of image unlike a lot of photographers.. that'd be boring.. still learning too! not even been doing it a year yet i don't think haha.. ill check my first vid :-) - funny thing i thought when i took the pics you'd like them at the tower! great fun place there! haha
Really amazing shots ! I'm just starting with street photography and wouldn't think there are this kind of really good video on RUclips ! Keep going, I love it !
Hello Gareth, nice images. It is hard to pick the best, each has something to tell .... I like them all. And yes, it is never easy to do the street photography ... :)))) Always some challenge ...
Nice one Gareth...you did get some really nice pics. I’ve just returned from Budapest and felt the same as you !...an amazing place, but so so hard to get the photos I thought I had planned. Tourists in there 1000’s didn’t help I think !
Gareth Danks ...yeah an amazing city and tons of things to do and visit !...I went looking to get some night photography, but didn’t quite manage to do very well. Some of my better pics were of the graffiti and stunning street art on buildings. The large indoor market was also great for atmosphere too. A must city to visit for sure, but I found it difficult to photograph with so many tourists ! Maybe a better option would be to visit at a quieter time in the winter months ! 🙂
The girl in red sat on the steps was my favourite. I didn’t even spot the dog on the girl’s lap of the couple on the bench. My eye was drawn to the guy who clocked you. I know what you mean about so many people and so much going on. I was in Amsterdam in 2017 and there were photo opportunities everywhere. I do Street because it’s tough sometimes. It pushes me as a photographer. Then I do my landscapes which chills me out and a cooked breakfast is always better after being out in the fresh air. No fail Gareth. Some great images there, but if you were always content with your images, you’d never progress. Congrats on the new baby. Now you won’t have to drag yourself out of bed at 5am. You’ll already be up with the little one. It does get easier as the weeks go on.
haha thanks simon! to be honest hes a great sleeper like his dad haha.. thats one of the reasons i started street.. its almost like shooting a wedding! youve got to be fast and ready for anything! it certainly sharpens your skills! and no im never content haha.. im a nightmare! never happy with an image! thanks for the comment Simon :-)
Congratulations on baby Ellis! Great video. Was there in the same area of Italy a couple of years ago and got some great pictures. Actually preferred Piza to Florence as I found it quieter and also more conducive to street photography. My favourites were 6 and 10.
hey man yeah i think i would have enjoyed a bit longer in pisa.. id left my wedding camera gear in an hold so was very nervous about not having it with me lol.. thanks for the feedback mate! :-)
Really enjoyable video , your review of shots is great, by showing successful and not so successful images is so much more realistic of a day shooting,
I'm glad you went on to explain some shots... I was going to ask about how you went about the bench shot.. with the guy looking daggers at you. Lol... I loved that one best... really good. 👍🤗
Great video! I had the same experience in Florence. It is beautiful but Candido street is so hard. For that I recommend Naples!! It is just perfect for street!
I’ve been to Florence and Pisa and yep, it rained as well, I liked the woman with the red jumpsuit and Panama hat, I would have shared the picture with her as well, good composition pictures should be share with the subject; I find that after the rain, the lighting becomes magical and enhances the colors as well. Just picked up my FujiFilm x100f and love the images from the FujiFilm system; great pics of David as well....I will recapture my travels with the FujiFilm system, can’t wait....
I like the self evaluation at the end, what you like and didn't and why. Good way to review a varied shoot. I think the images that really stand out are the ones with women in red and hat, the 3/4 front view, legs extended and relaxed. Like a model on an outdoor set. I like B&W but the color images work the best. The deep read and neutral gray background is a perfect combination. So, how many good images does it take to make your shoot successful and not a fail? This shoot may not have been as prolific as others you showed us, but it is not a fail. Maybe I have low standards.
Hey glen thanks for the comment mate. Yeah good question. It’s not about the quantity of images. It’s was just that I had higher expectations. To be honest I do like the pics.. Great vlog again Gareth, agree with you about Pisa being a manic place Florence is just great. Went there 20 years ago and The view from the top of the Duomo is great. I like pic 7 the one of David with the gent in the hat in front of it.
Great video. Love the way you walk around vlogging with all the people around you. Still building up to that 🙈🙂. Congrats on the little one as well. 👍👌👌
Hey christian thanks mate he’s a fantastic little baby. Super cute. Yeah well if I didn’t film it that way it wouldn’t ever happen. Also bare in mind that no one actually cares haha. You’ll get there 👍🏻😊
@@GarethDanks cheers Gareth. yeah definitely seems to get easier the more I do,. All good fun though. 🙂. I guess you will be doing the vlogging one handed while pushing the little ones buggy in the next ones 😉👍🙂
Great vlog Gareth! I loved #6 and #7 in Black and White. The last time I was in Florence in 2011 we could not take photos of the David, my brother used me to hide from the security to take a photo and the security lady saw what we were doing and yelled at us from across the hall and told us no photos! She walked over and made sure we deleted it, my how time has changed! :)
Congrats on the baby! Expecting to see some tips on taking a baby with you on your photo shoots. :) Also... there's so much art in Florence, it just doesn't seem fair to the rest of the world.
I find your pictures interesting and not a fail .You went to Florence only with the X100F or did you have a second camera with you?I mean a wide lens would be obvious for the main sights or a tele for the view of Ponte Vecchio from piazzale Michelangelo .A 'must' trip is Siena as well.
Hi Gareth, I was making a reference to a children's TV show a few years back called 'the magic roundabout' , If you look it up you will understand. All the best mate..
really enjoyed the vid Gareth, I think you may be a hard on yourself, however my favs are the lady on the steps and the guy sitting on the ledge type thing, congratulations to you and yours, nice one fella, know the time you used to have …….;)
Hey Richard thanks mate. Yeah I think more of them now than when I first took them. Good to keep the bar high tho. Thanks mate. Yeah growing so fast. He can carry my bag soon 👍🏻😊
Thanks for sharing my pictures from the escalator at Frankfurt Airport! Seeing how they came out in your feed, I am glad i didn’t post the picture of the woman in a short skirt... That sharing mean a lot for me, as you where the one who inspired me to try street photography. :-)
The last photo was great and also the woman in the red dress. I was just in Florence and agree that street photography is a challenge at night. I’ll tag a couple of my Florence photos with street_ga. Keep the street videos coming!
Great vlog and stop being hard on yourself. Street photography can be a joy one moment and so frustrating the next. I go out every day here in Calgary and sometimes don't come back with a banger but that's just the way it is sometimes. The fact you're getting out, learning, looking and trying to find opportunities and enjoying yourself is the may thing. Thanks for posting my photo (@followcsp) its very much appriciated and a great surprise at the end of the video. Thanks again for sharing your journey
hey thanks mate! very grateful for the comment and yes your right! its the sad fact i guess! tho when photography is your job your not allowed to not get an image.. so i guess i think like that even when its for fun! and your welcome mate! thanks for adding the tag! :-)
Yes I guess so, pressure must be on to deliver when you’re shooting a weddings etc. Still don’t beat yourself up you’re still delivering the bangers regardless. 👍
David made you feel inadequate? I love Italy, especially Milan and Como but I have also come back from Venice with some DREADFUL photos. Photo 13 in colour was my fav. Congratulations on the new baby. 👍👍
Nothing wrong with any of the photo's. The only problem with street photography is that culture/style/architecture is so multinational that the same shots could have been taken in Manchester, Berlin or Pontypridd. The David and hat photo at least says Florence. Favourite photo, the baby of course...be nice to your kids, they decide what old folks home you go into. You'll have a lot more grey hair before he leaves home.
Interesting comment mate. Had me thinking. Tho I’m not sure I agree. If you went to the states there’s no historical architecture really. But yes I see what your saying. All in all the uk and Europe has everything. It’s just seeing the opportunities. And not being overwhelmed with tourists. Are you from Ponty then? Haha god you liked elis’ pic. He’s amazing 👍🏻😊
Warning : long response! Architecture, something I hold dear to my heart, as I was brought up on the brutalism of Brum in the seventies (nope I'm from Brum, self-doubt and over explanation are part of my DNA too). Architectural multinationalism....I really liked the photo's of the girl in the hat and red dress with the columns, but it could have been taken in Glasgow, I've shots outside the Gallery of Modern Art that are equivalent, or in Liverpool at St George's Hall....our at the White House. I've nothing against Neo-Classicism or Victorian Gothic or any style of architecture, I even 'like' brutalism. The point is only that going to Florence (brilliant city I've never visited) can land you with shots that could be taken in Kuala Lumpur (my father had photo's from the 1950's that had that colonial architecture style) or even in Pontypridd (I've never been there but I'd guess you'd find a library, council building or a mine owner's mansion in that style). The backstreet photo's were moody and stylish as well and looked like the moody and stylish backstreet shots taken by Paul Compton in Krakow last year, which could have been taken in Brum or Pontypridd. Why I think you felt you were somehow failing (which you weren't) was I believe because you were looking for something different and in this world of 'cultural appropriation' you were struggling. They were still well thought out and composed shots, with light and shade directing the eye; the real challenge is to find something different in a world where everyone has a camera and things are becoming homogeneous. Anyway. photography has suddenly become the least of your problems. Take lots and lots of photo's of Ellis, especially ones you can embarrass him with when he brings his first girlfriend home. One of my two has just left home and I'm slowly inching the other one out....All the best mate, enjoy the nappies :-)
Hi Gareth, You should come to Malta you will love Street and Landscape and we can take you around.. I will be in London on Friday coming. Hope we could catch up. Oh I just saw one of pics featured in the end of the vlog lol, many Thanks.
Hey Martin mate how are you. Sorry I’m in London 9th nov now. But yes I’d love to visit Malta. We may go. Mrs has bought the lonely planet book ready haha
I liked the girl in the frame - I thought you’d got it just right as I liked the contrast of her in the darker corner against the brightly lit interior. I thought they were all class images, def not a fail....
A refreshing video, self critiquing your work helps aspiring photographers to look at their own work and not be too disappointed (speaking for myself). I liked the image of the lady on the steps but her right leg spoiled the photo for me, it looked disjointed. I really liked the image of the young lady in the shop entrance it was only when you pointed out what you wanted to achieve that I looked at it in a different way. Keep up the good work and congratulations to you both on the birth of Elis.
Ah hey paul thanks mate yeah he’s awesome 😊👍🏻 she does look awkward your right. Wish I could have posed her 😂👍🏻 yeah I’m a terrible critique of my work. Never happy 😂👍🏻
Hi Gareth nice shoot, and good to hear your thoughts as you go around. My fave is the woman in the hat near the pillars, taken from her left hand side X10F5297 (at 18:35secs). This looks quite like a fashion shot, her hat and her body positioning all seem to work well together. I'm based in Cardiff and would be interested to know if you're doing some group shooting nearby, so I'll check out your insta. Cheers and keep up the good work.
hey Keyo! thanks for the kind feedback mate! yeah i liked that pic! made my day haha.. of course! ill sort something out for cardiff soon.. appreciate you watching :-)
The eternal photographer’s problem of too many people!! There must be thousands of street snappers around the world going mad just now, all those perfect compositions and they can’t get out to get them!!! 😣😣
Congrats but you need to recognize the quality of the pictures. I liked the woman in the shop doorway. Unusual location. If I had got any of those I’d have been very happy.
You seem to have ignored the basic rules of composition. I find it amazing that so many Street Photographers take pictures of people in various poses and call it Street Photography. It is not. It is Street Portraiture. Street Photography employs the basic rules of Composition. Without even some basic elements of Composition, Street Photography cannot be considered to be Street Photography.
Hi Chris, thanks for the comment.. tho im going to hugely disagree.. firstly there isnt one single image in this video that is 'posed'.. if you watch my videos you'll know im very much a candid photographer and agree that street photography cannot be staged or posed in any way.. that shot of the lady on the steps was 100% un posed and i hadn't even spoken to her at the point of taking the shots! Had i posed her it would have been done with her arms and legs in a far nicer position as she seems rather awkward in the pics to me.. (assuming this is the pic you refer to?) As for composition.. while i agree that images to be balanced there needs to be a structure to the frame.. this is 100% down to the photographers discretion, there are NO rules in photography.. its an art form, what works for you or the photographer is all that matters! its art, and is NOT governed by anyone other than the artist themself! Thirds are immensely helpful guidelines! nont rules! i 95% of the time use them myself.. this is how i got the pillars straight.. tho i do not consider an image to be wrongly arranged or constructed if the elements aren't firmly on third lines.. if i have misunderstood your comment i apologise, id be very interested to hear you thoughts on this further.. Thanks for watching i hope you enjoyed the video otherwise! Gareth :-)
@@GarethDanks ...there are NO rules in photography.. its an art form... This is a nonsensical argument. Read a book on artistic composition and stop your tomfoolery.
@@GarethDanks Now that hopefully you've decided to educate yourself on the intricacies of Photographic Composition, and that it is not pie in the sky as you like to tell us it is, I am greatly looking forward to your new videos with your new-found expertise. I'm sure there must be many more people in your audience like myself who are really fed up with being led down the garden path by people who are not familiar with the subject they profess to be an expert on. You are certainly not alone here on YT with so many people not really knowing their subject, yet consider themselves to be an expert. So it will be a refreshing change to get some good photography that we can all enjoy and really appreciate, as well as your inimitable commentary that makes your videos so enjoyable. I'm sure it will be an epic. Please do not keep us waiting too long for it. Greatly looking forward to it. PS The next time you decide to give us a lengthy reply, can you please check the grammar in a spell-checker because it makes it so much easier for your audience to comprehend without having to decipher it first. Consider it as if you are writing for a job interview. It only takes just a little more effort, yet the result is more than worth it. As well as making a statement about yourself, that others will appreciate. And, you will differentiate yourself from the herd. Many thanks.
My Mrs has been banging on about going to Florence for ages - looks like you recommend the place though? Loved those fun shots at Pisa mate - how stupid did they look lol
I'm sorry I saw your Insta stories when you were already about to leave so I couldn't give you all my local advices, but I'm so happy to hear you are in love with my hometown :) Thanks Gareth! The last photo was great and also the woman in the red dress. I was just in Florence and agree that street photography is a challenge at night. I’ll tag a couple of my Florence photos with street_ga. Keep the street videos coming!
Ah hey man. Thanks for watching. Beautiful place tho I loved it. Very pretty. Thanks mate I’ll look for them 👍🏻😊
Gareth that photo wall in the background, are the photos held on by small magnets? Or tacks? It’s a great idea I’d love to put in my own home!
hi brian.. metal board and small magnets mate :-) ikea think
Thank you Sir
I always Wait for new 1 Idea from Your Sir ❤❤❤
Thanks my friend 👍🏻😊
Thanks my friend 👍🏻😊
Thank you Too answers
Loved to hear your internal thoughts about what images you wre looking for. You got plenty of wonderful images, certainly not a fail!
hey thank you Pat! thats nice to hear! ill certainly do more! :-)
David made you feel inadequate?
I love Italy, especially Milan and Como but I have also come back from Venice with some DREADFUL photos. Photo 13 in colour was my fav. Congratulations on the new baby.
👍👍
Hey man thanks for watching. Not inadequate no haha. But he’s pretty incredible. Como is stunning. We went last year. Venice was too busy too. 😊👍🏻
The dream mate
haha not yet! thanks mate! :-)
“The welsh weather’s followed me” 😂
Just my luck 😂👍🏻
No13 is an awesome shot!
Hey thanks so much 👍🏻😊
6 b&w,also,if you crop from just below top right to bottom left at a 45 degree angle,it works for me,,,but, what do I know 😂keep up the good work
thanks mate.. ill have a look! :-)
Great tips thanks
Your welcome 😊👍🏻
What meatring mode do you use..
i dont mate.. its set to evaluative but i just expose to the right.. (when possible)
17:16 The David & hat: cool 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
thanks mate! :-)
Love 6. Would have liked more rain to contrast against the sanctuary of the shop?
Oh nice. Don’t think it showed up but would have been cool yes! 👍🏻😊
18-35 the arms and legs shape my favourite, classic !
thanks mate! appreciate the comment! glad you enjoyed :-)
Lady in red !
thanks mate!
@@GarethDanks I am great Thank You. No worries re London I understand. You would love Malta. Let us know when you come. Keep up the good work.
#12 and especially #13 monochrome where nice
thanks mate! appreciate that :-)
I liked the girl in the frame - I thought you’d got it just right as I liked the contrast of her in the darker corner against the brightly lit interior. I thought they were all class images, def not a fail....
hey thanks so much michael! appreciate the kind feedback! yeah im too hard on myself! yeah i liked that pic too! :-)
Favourite photo? Gareth Junior in camera bag.
haha.. mine too! thanks mate! :-)
I liked 7 and 15.
thanks mate! :-)
7 and 11 were my personal favorites, I think 6 could have been something special if you hadn’t been held back by the rain 👍
Thanks Liam. Yeah non wr cameras suck lol.
Gareth Danks maybe the x100v will have it 🤞
Hi Gareth nice shoot, and good to hear your thoughts as you go around.
#7 & #11
Everything in mono except that gift of a lady in the red dress
haha yeah i agree! thanks mate! :-)
Hey Gareth, congrats to you both on baby Alice.
Thanks John that’s very kind 😊👍🏻
You're too hard on yourself mate, great location and great shots. It's a difficult subject at the best of times
Hey man thanks so much. Yeah I am. Annoying ay 😂👍🏻
The eternal photographer’s problem of too many people!! There must be thousands of street snappers around the world going mad just now, all those perfect compositions and they can’t get out to get them!!! 😣😣
You missed shot number 5 when the couple were both looking off to the side. :-)
thanks mate ill take a look :-)
Much too hard on yourself, it is most definitely not a fail. Difficult to choose between 9 and 13, but I think 13 just shades it for me.
Hey Patrick thanks mate. Yeah I think I am. But I wanna get better.. and I’m not patient 😂👍🏻
Congrats but you need to recognize the quality of the pictures. I liked the woman in the shop doorway. Unusual location. If I had got any of those I’d have been very happy.
hey thank you Michael! appreciate that mate!
(assuming this is the pic you refer to?)
As for composition.. while i agree that images to be balanced there needs to be a structure to the frame.. this is 100% down to the photographers discretion, there are NO rules in photography.. its an art form, what works for you or the photographer is all that matters! its art, and is NOT governed by anyone other than the artist themself!
Chris Carson it’s not an argument Chris. It’s your opinion and mine. Are you prepared to share a link to your photography?

Now that hopefully you've decided to educate yourself on the intricacies of Photographic Composition, and that it is not pie in the sky as you like to tell us it is, I am greatly looking forward to your new videos with your new-found expertise.
PS
The next time you decide to give us a lengthy reply, can you please check the grammar in a spell-checker because it makes it so much easier for your audience to comprehend without having to decipher it first.
Loved those fun shots at Pisa mate - how stupid did they look lol
ah mate its gorgeous!! really loved it! i cant wait to take my mrs there! youll love it mate!
Just watch your gear in Florence especially Michael Angelo square.
i had heard prior to going and was conscious but thankfully didn't have any issues :-)
I'm sorry I saw your Insta stories when you were already about to leave so I couldn't give you all my local advices, but I'm so happy to hear you are in love with my hometown :) Thanks Gareth! By the way, one of the perks of being Florentine is that you can get married for free in Palazzo Vecchio (7:36) and it's a blast. Make sure to ping me before you go again!
Cheers!
@fabienb
That’s so nice of you mate. I’ll be heading back again soon because I’d love to show Carys around. She’d love it. It’s an incredible place. 👍🏻😊
Hi Gareth,
I Follow your Videos from Germany and loved the way how you explain your shots. You make great pictures
and have a wonderfull look to all that objects you choosen. I like your accent but its hard to understand for me if you run out of breath than your Language is fluently quick.
Haha thanks. Mate sorry I speak too fast. I will try and slow down. I guess I’m too excited haha. Appreciate you watching 👍🏻😊
I really like the David one.. sorry, I'm 1 year late😁
