How well do you know your Southern African birds calls? Find out by playing along with my bird call challenge over the next ten days! Each day I will post a video with 15 bird calls - 5 easy, 5 moderate and 5 difficult. The challenge is to not only see how many you get right in each video, but also what your grand total is out of 150 at the end of the 10 challenges.

Many thanks to Cilliers & organizers for the stimulating 10-episode bird quizz.
It kept me on my toes and seriously rattled on many occasions.
The most challenging aspect of the quizz to me was attempting to decipher the call out of a studio, rather sterile, recording with very limited real life context, factors such as accompanying background sounds from the location of the call & the locality where the recording was made.
My final score was 106/150.

Total today 13/15. Missed D3 and D5 so 132/150. This has been so much fun. Thank you so much Villiers for all your effort in putting this together. It has been the highlight of my day. In fact, trying to get put names to some of the calls with my addled lockdown brain almost became my whole day! I will miss this.

Enjoyed the 10 Challenges! Heard a bird with an upward and downward breathy sound like a stick swung on rope. At about 14h00 in Pta. Then about a.month later heard it again on a TV Safari program , in the background. Dis beslisnie die Suidelike Waterfiskaal of die Pearl SpottedOwl, nii Owl, nie. Any suggestions?

Could be a white-throated robin-chat. We call it the flat-tyre bird because it sounds like it’s pumping its wheels 😂

Hi Villiers, how about a general bush knowledge challenge? Trees, tracks, markings, social behavior, social interaction, veld types, geology, insects, mammals etc.
10.5 today. Wrong woodpecker :( 100 out or 150. You’ve exposed a lot of rust! 6 years out of the bush now and this is what happens.

Total for the day... a pathetic 6. Total for the challenge 78... marginally more than half. I think I should stick to other animals :) BTW - excellent quiz. I got just about all the easy one right, half the medium ones and nearly none of the hard ones, which tells me they were well chosen. I also realised just how quickly you lose calls when you don't visit certain areas often anymore...
