- Unboxing Betty: Episode 6
This week Melinda is in the kitchen cooking a Party Sandwich Loaf. This dish was often served as the centerpiece at the table at baby showers and women’s luncheons in the 60s and 70s, and it sure does look presentable! It’s a sandwich that’s constructed from 4 layers of bread and three distinct layers of filling, frosted like a cake with cream cheese and decorated with vegetables. It’s a bear to make but in all honesty, it was surprisingly satisfying! I invite you to make this for your next brunch and see what your guests think…
Happy Homemaking!

I made this for a friend’s bridal shower in the early 80s. 😆 I loved it.
its perfect for a bridal shower! thanks for watching!
My aunt used to make a variation of this, but with egg salad, chicken salad, and ham salad. It was always a big hit at the church suppers..
My grandma used those same fillings, with the addition of the cheese spread. It was so good!
Yes.
I love the idea that you are cooking your way through the Betty Crocker recipe box. I love vintage recipes!❤❤❤❤
Some of these vintage recipes are really interesting, but fun to try! This looks like something we should make.
All recipes are made to be eaten and enjoyed. Your surprise is unwarranted at the success of this particular one.
I wouldn’t say all are meant to be enjoyed, many recipes don’t stand the test of time as palates change. Good example is many of the Depression era meals from the U.S., they were mostly meant to fill a stomach, not to taste good. 😅
Girl, that is adorable!! Good job
I am making a sandwich loaf/cake this Saturday for a retro themed garden party and this video was so helpful! Especially knowing why each layer is buttered first - that seemed excessive when I read my recipe but if it helps the filling from not seeping in then I will definitely do it! I loved your banter too - "get out of here celery!" LOL.
yay! I'm so glad my video was helpful. Good luck on your sandwich loaf, let me know how it turns out!
My sandwich cake was a success! Your video gave me the confidence I needed! I remembered not to cut my celery in the egg salad layer too big. Thanks again!
Ps here's a picture of my sandwich cake drive.google.com/file/d/1fgTeL08EM_XQRI2mQATfDNhoSOPCNwDT/view?usp=drivesdk
Wooo! Your cake looks gorgeous! Love the rose petals and the dill was a great idea too! I'm so glad my video helped :)
We use different fillings, but Swedish sandwich cakes are the same concept and a pretty classic thing here - very common for parties and big get-togethers. But yeah, you've definitely got to use fillings you actually like 😅
I wish I could be a fly on the wall at the bridge club or league meeting in 1971 where this was served.
haha same!
Thanks for sharing your recipe with us, great tutorial. You made it fun too!👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼💞
You're the only constant. They can you line up anybody at this point. They all will be fighting over your place of greatness, to get the views, the followers, and the endorsements. The only thing is not debatable is that you're the mainstay.
Its a version of the Swedish Smorgastorta. Delicious.
ooh just looked it up and those are so pretty! Thanks for watching :)
I only know the sandwich loaf my Mexican culture Makes. It’s just layers of white bread and chicken salad and then covered with cream cheese mixed with pineapple bits and cut up walnut or pecan pieces. Es un “sándwichon”
oh that's so cool to hear about this version, I bet pineapple bits would taste good! I also have a video with a recipe called Fonduloha, it's basically a pineapple chicken salad and that flavor combo was interesting! Thanks for watching!
I like this as a concept but I think I'd end up swapping some of the ingredients around since I don't like mayo. Either way it looks impressive and I like the idea of a slice and serve cold lunch
I want a Big Mac-inspired party sandwich loaf.
Oh heck yeah! You could use thousand island instead of butter to keep the bread from getting soggy
Part of me thinks that that would actually be interesting to bring to a party, but another part me of wonders what was that era's fascination with mayonnaise?
the golden cheese spread seems to be basically pimento cheese, minus the usual peppers (which imo is a big loss). hot tip: if you buy pre-shredded cheese, there's starch coating every shred to prevent sticking, personally I'd just shred my own cheese with either a grater or a food processor
oh man, I have pimento in the fridge I could have added, that does sound nice! And that's super helpful to know about pre-shedded cheese, I bet if I shredded my own, the mixture would have combined more into a spread. Next time! Thanks for watching :)
Really enjoyed this - although I have to admit the visual really gave me the fear. (Your recreation of the flower on top was impressive though!)
Making it for Easter this year. 🙂
how did it go?!
@@UnboxingBetty couldn't find an unsliced loaf of bread! 😭
Watching this in November is critical mistake. Now I am really in the mood for Christmas salads cooking, but it is almost two months wait
Have you NEVER had PIMENTO CHEESE???? LOL!! It's delicious!!
I used to a make this all the time! Your bread slices were way too thick and hard looking, It's supposed to be "delicate" not hardy. I also made crab and shrimp quiche to go along with it. Perfect for a baby shower or cocktail party.
ooh yes that quiche sounds like a perfect pairing!
I have never seen this actually made before. I thought it was neat.
my birthday cake
haha I can arrange that!
Its in my 1950s cook book but its ham bacon eggs instead. Mine might actually be more eatable than your ingredients 🤣
omg that does sound so much better! a breakfast loaf?
I think I love you. LOL
