Step One - Have you got what it takes?
To be a successful voice over, here are ten personal characteristics you really need to have:
1. You need to genuinely enjoy speaking without being self-conscious.
2. No matter what your accent is, your voice needs to be clear and understandable.
3. You’d have an excellent understanding of English grammar, both formal and colloquial English.
4. You need a good level of computer literacy; you need to be able to record and edit your own scripts at home; if you pay someone else to do this or hire a studio, your profit will plummet.
5. You need to be able to sight-read scripts easily and accurately.
6. You have to speak in a natural manner, and interpret the empathy of the message, and not just talk as if you’re just reading words off a script.
7. Particularly when recording audiobooks with character voices, you’d need to have the ability to change your voice quickly, to change the mood, speed and style of your voice and stay rock-solid in that style.
8. You need to be able to follow detailed instructions from the client, either by headphones in a directed session or by email when they leave you to self-direct, and be good at responding fast to minimize retakes.
9. You need to be able to take criticism about your voice performances constructively.
10. And you need to have plenty of stamina for long or complicated reads.
Step Two - You need to build a Home Recording Studio
Step Three - Check your Internet Speed
Step Four - You’ll need to record a selection of showreels
Step Five - Create your voiceover website
Step Six - Get featured on various job websites
Step Seven - Direct market yourself
Step Eight - Set up an accounts system
Step Nine - Regularly update your website
Step Ten- Buy a Porsche...
Or whatever makes you happy….hopefully you’ll love doing this work anyway, but give yourself a target to aim towards to help that psychological push to bigger and better jobs as a voice actor.

The perfect accent for Americans is in fact, no accent. Accents don’t sell…,
@@Beachbum471 everybody has an accent. Just that you can't hear it yourself. But others can.
Just recorded my voice doing voice over for my videos and honestly I have all the respect for voice over artists... it hard and takes so much work, and I'm nowhere near any good level! Your voice is awesome!
Thank you so much for this.. as a beginner and a passionate one, I am inpress with this information.
Hey!! You gave up ??
Ikr it's awesome how they manage to change their voice for so many different tones and cadence
You’re far too much in love with your internal voice, I can help you unleash and re-invigorate your desire to hear me tell you your voice needs a little bit more refining, my ear, and unlimited voice range (best impersonator-in this field-Richard Attenborough to Cosby) have helped my clients tap into, and discover their own talent, not mine, to a level that helps them claim their own unique stake in a market where the right voice, genuine, relatable, and focused to your clients’ needs …

I am from Nigeria. I am just starting my career as a voice over artist and I find this really helpful. Thank you so much.
😊 all my schizophrenic ramblings in different accents and speaking styles will finally pay off
I've been writing scripts and reading them in different speaking styles since I was pretty young,
This seems like a great way to turn a passion into a job.
So did you started or yet?
I clicked for voice over. And i got gold in return.
Finally the first person to say we need the demo in MP3 format. I spent 1 hour searching videos and not 1 person said what format. so frustrating. Thank you!
Thank you for the information.
Planning to work as a voice-over artist.
Need all the information and training as a beginner.
Where I am currently now...
You fuel me so much! I am a beginner but your words are all I needed for that final push. I know I can do it, Thank you!
Thank you for your kind comments! Good luck with your VO career!
I like it all but the most is the last step. That makes complete sense and instills a sense of motivation directly in your mind and ultimately leads you to thrive on your goal. and Thank you for all tips.
Ha Ha! Yes, Maulik, I think everybody needs a sense of motivation in their lives. My voice work well provides for my family so that keeps me going. Although I could afford a new Porsche, I'm actually quite happy with my Honda CRV! Peter Baker
Thank you for all these excellent advice!
Peter Baker, this video is remarkable! The quality has really improved. Because of you I have a career in Voiceover and Presenting on Fiverr. Thank you for showing us your process. I aspire to develop my own voice like you.
What are you doing here, a$shole?
This is so great, thank you.
Thank you for this information. Do you use vocal tuning?
This was so helpful thank you I’m happy to subscribe!!!!!
I am from Eastern Europe. Life is hard. One day I hope to be as good as you.
I've wanted to be a voice over artist ever since I downloaded my favorite game. I want to do voice over work for the game and maybe do some work for english dubbed animes too!
I wish I could finally go outside and train at the nearest voice over studio from my place. But even if I don't have a mic or a working pc yet I often practice voice acting whenever I'm alone, I don't want to ever settle with a boring job that's why I want to be a voice over artist!
is it genshin? cause me too XD
Did my first radio add recently
You are wonderful! Thank you for kindly sharing all of these great tips! They are so useful!
There is a little bit of a South African accent trickling through pronunciation here and there.
Lovely.
YES! i was wondering why it sounded so familiar
I need to to thank you for ones time just for this fantastic video! Your channel is also really good.

I'm glad that my life experience can be shared here on RUclips and through all the courses on www.VoiceoverMasterclass.com Voice work is often fun but always satisfying, and you can get a good income working from home. Good luck. Peter
Your voice is very good. I wish that you can do voice over for me.
Well, this certainly convinced me that I probably wouldn’t have the capacity to take voice-over work seriously but only as a hobby. I have no interest in marketing myself.
I just started this process.
I BOUGHT THIS COURSE YEARS AGO, CAME IN A ZIPPERED BINDER WITH CDs & PRINTED MATERIALS. I BELIEVE IT WAS $199😬
I recommend you don’t follow the list in reverse as I did. I got my Porsche repossessed.
Working on my studio in the closet now.
😄😄😄
😂🤣😂🤣😂
3:43 Thanks for this lovely quality content! Please May I ask, is that 15 or 50 mbps recommended for upload 🙏?
Sir thank you! Im interest to start and i dont know how to start..
Me to I have experience in making music I’m thinking of using that to help me record voice.
Thank you so much for this! Any tips on what mics to get when gettinf started with voice overs?
i hear a lot of goods about the Shure SM7B, two other and better mics and even Industry standard ones which are used a lot in Television and also even in Hollywood would be the Sennheiser MKH 416 which is a good Outdoor mic but can also used indoor but its a little more detailed in the highs, for me that one would not work well because i struggle with some harshness, I lisp slightly thats why i use the Sennheiser MKH 50 which is high end for Voice Overs and a lot darker than the MKH 416, perfect for me, and its mostly used indoor.
@@VELVET462 thank you so much for these details! Will definitely look into these types of mics
@@musealot9161 Sure, there are some more like the Rode NTG, audio technica got some more, just saying because the 2 MKH's from sennheiserr which i said are more expensive, i think to find someone on youtube with a similiar voice like you reviewing microphones can help, thats how i did it. Cheers
Thank you!
Thank you for the tips. Very helpful...
Very nice and concise introduction to voice over artistry. I am at ground zero in my career change direction and this has been an informative and a welcome wake up call if i am serious about this goal. Considering your course as a comprehensive introduction. What sample beginner scripts would you recommend? Thanks
Peter, Thank you, , Your contents are always great.

Wow this is powerful information. I've had friends tell me over the years that my animated voices are so funny and creative. Now it's time to have fun with this. Thanks so much for this inspiring video. Alan Beasley
Same bro, but I’m more in the narrating and professional voice. I’ve had several professors compliment my voice so I’m here seeing how to make this into money.
Good luck bro

Great video!
Thank you for your video I am looking to get into voice over but I live in a place where there is nowhere I can sound proof is there any equipment I can get to get me by before I can afford something better?
It sounds goofy but you can get a bed comforter and put it over yourself like a tent. It's not perfect but it's pretty good.
@@joshbrady9501 thanks
Sir. If I take Sure's SM58 Mic and Artery Mini Fuse Audio Interface. So would this setup be good? Can I record and mix poetry in professional quality on this setup? Will there be any problem?
the biggest concerns should be your room acoustics, the interface and mic are good. As a rule of thumb i say invest twice the money for room acoustics. Microphone and Interface are not as important.
@@vince6d OK thanks sir, can you suggest me good mic and audio interface? My budget is 300 Dollar .
Thanks so much Peter.
This is insightful.
Hi,
I am a voice over artist.
I want to ask one thing.
When I wake up in the morning I feel my voice very perfect. But after breakfast and couple of hours there are few tiny voices I experience during recordings coming from my mouth.
How I can keep my voice as clear , Noise free and beautiful as I experience in early in morning.
I would be more than happy if you can tell me few tips to achieve things what I want.
Thanks
Qaiser Nadeem
Hi - I try to record most of my scripts in the morning, before eating. If something HOT comes in, I'll try to wait 2 hours after eating. Warm lemon water will also cut through any mucous, too and allow a clearer voice to come through. Hope this helps!

Thanks for your help.
So using warm lemon 🍋 really helps to clean things.👍

Really Awesome!
Sir i love to sing a song but i cant can you tell me which your course is good for me?

Wow! Thank you so much for this.
Step ten really got me smiling broadly😁😊
what would you suggest to do when starting out completely fresh in terms of writing a made up script ?
Every one tells me I have missed my calling for becoming a voice over artist and that my voice has gravel. I have all of the above. But I don't know to start.
Check out Bill DeWees on RUclips. He has a ton of information on how to get started.
I bought a VW CC... I followed Step 10 incorrectly.....
Step 10 🙌👌
I love this
I don't see the PDF link for the book

Do I need to take jobs that don't have a contract?
Very useful insight for those VO aspirants
I am wanting to sing Indian Carnatic songs where Karaoke is not available
What incredibly good advice fills me with confidence I have done some voice work in the past when I was younger for audiovisual companies, I was particularly good accents and impersonations something I carried on into my later years.

I do wonder how people connect to voice jobs in the real world,
Q: what are ways to use one's voice in voiceover industry?
I've created complete courses on how to find voice over jobs and the many different ways to use one's voice in the voiceover industry
Yay for pink toes!
I would like to translate your video into Arabic, because you have a lot of fans in the Middle East.
Succinct advice, just about to launch into this world .. hold onto your hat !
Good stuff!
Thanks for the vid
Well that's it. I don't have confidence in my voice so I guess number 1 is down. That's a wrap smh
Good thing about confidence, it can be developed through exposure. You can do it 👌🏾
Unless you like getting phone calls at 3 am 😂
"You need to enjoy speaking without feeling self-concious" 😨
Anyone any advice on sound blocking that will work against loud barks. My gf has 2 dogs and 1 is alert barker, he doesnt do it it alot, but when he does, like most dogs, it is very loud and cuts through the whole house like a barky sonic boom.
I don't think you will find such a tool!
I use Krisp but it's not made for this: When you start recording, leaving a blank let it analyze the background noise, then reducing it "live". Which is great, if you have difficulties eliminating that noise without creating a distortion in the voice (once again, it doesn't do miracles, so, you won't be able to record with a fan or the air con working). But if new a new noise appears while you are recording, you must redo that part.
Sleeping pills might be a solution! 😂😂
Good luck 👍👍
@@laurentsaffard6318 Thanks for the reply. Yeah they can be hard to block out without creating a sound proof room within a room or something like that and spending a fortune.
@@mick0978 Yep, I had an idea : He can record the dog separately from his place at the same level he is doing his recordings. Then after a recording, import the "dog noise", take it as a noise profile and apply the noise reduction to the part of the recording where it is needed.
I am doubting the result is going to be perfect. I had to deal with a dog barking all night in my neighborhood, besides not being able to record, I couldn't sleep. I think I've come up with 1000 ways to make it disappear!! 😂
@@mick0978 There are other options we haven't talk about : The microphone that you use. In your case, you probably should use a dynamic microphone who will catch less noise around, or even better, a shotgun microphone. The best seems to be the sennheiser MKH 416-P48U3, but it's quite expensive. Moreover, you will read a lot of reviews saying that you cannot use it in a room. Actually, it's not correct. You can, but not in every kind of room. Especially a very small booth. Then you must record in front of it and not moving because of the size of the diaphragm. But the results are great, both in terms of noise reduction and quality of the recording. I cannot advise another youtube account here, but make some research, you will find efficient tests easily.
Oh aye they can be very loud and rather hard to block out. Especially when 1 starts and the whole neighbour hood joins in
What's this dragon dispersion depicting???
Can anyone enlighten me
Well, this guy doest sound like the typical “if you want it you can do it”
