  • In September 2000 my wife and I were invited to run the Amtrak Acela locomotive simulator. This is a two camera look at that event.

    I got to do this at Railcamp 2019 and it was really cool. This year is the last year they’ll have this simulator up unfortunately because of the new Acela trains coming

    I do have some more video of Amtrak Wilmington shops and the training center to edit and put up. Have much more Amtrak video and some of trains/scenery in Germany and Switzerland to share but need to edit. Editing is for me about what to throw away versus what to keep. Thanks for your comments.

    I got something to explain to Mr. Edward Waldrup. The Amtrak Acela Express, even though they had some technologies from the French manufacturing firm of Alstom, was mostly built by the Canadian manufacturing firm of Bombardier at their plants United States plants in Plattsburgh, New York and Barre, Vermont.

      Yes,, Peter I agree. I traveled to Barre, Vt. and saw the passenger cars in final assembly. In nearby Montpellier we got to see the finished power units awaiting their marriage to the passenger cars before traveling to Amtrak. The power units came from Plattsburg just as you say. Thanks.

    I don't recall using the horn. Is it a K5LA horn on the Acela? When I drove the locos at Portola Locomotive Museum I was asked not to use the horn because of the neighbors. Interestingly the simulators for either the Genesis (AMD 103) and or AEM 7 are made in Arlington, Texas I understand. Near my current location. The Acela simulator comes from France and I was told and there is only one.

    you can have this at home minus the fancy controls. They use train simulator, a Microsoft game from a very long time ago. Exactly the same as that version.

    Bit late to the party maybe, but this looks like it was an awesome experience indeed! :-)
    Some regional and traction variances aside, the Acela looks quite similar to our own Eurostar trains and I understand these were used as the basis for the design. Is this in fact correct? :-)
    Now...If only Amtrak would allow them to be operated at the same 300km/h the eurostar does! ;-)

      High speed trains in the US have been a difficult sell. I am in favor of them as an alternative to flying and because I love trains. If Amtrak is supposed to serve the public interest and at the same time make a profit how does that work? Amtrak has to lobby congress for money. Acela is to be replaced with something from the east which will do 165 I believe. Amtrak lives in a very political environment.

    Is there a P42 simulator

    • @EdWaldrup
      @EdWaldrup  7 лет назад +1

      Probably. Not sure it was there when I visited in 2000. I like the P42 as well. Hard to believe that it is 20 years old now and time to replace.

      Yes there’s a P42 simulator there as well as an ACS-64 sim
