    Altogether now 🎶
Now, the first envelope is a bi-polar affair with its outputs being A and B,
The 2nd and 3rd are quite debonair and their outputs are C, D and E
This alphabetic fun crops up all over the place where you modulate almost anything,
You'll be left with a big fat smile upon your face as you hear the CS-30 start to sing,
Now, the two filters here are multi-mode designs that can be setup in several ways,
The amps, you see, can be separate or combined and I'm sure that you're suitably amazed
Oh! There's pulse width modulation, there's sample and hold, there's ring modulation and there's bend,
There's slidey portamento, there's voltages controlled, there's even a sub octave at the end
You can sequence, you can play, you can run things through, you can create sounds in true stereo,
Oh! There's oh so many options of the things that one can do, but I'll shut up now and we'll get on with the show!

Never saw any of your videos before this one... and I had no idea what I was in for. Was expecting to hear someone talk to a camera about specs while occasionally playing a few notes, but instead found an impressively dense production full of multiple bangers. Had to rewind a few times to listen again and dance, especially for the last tune... and to think about the inspiring musical ideas demonstrated in the arrangement. It hasn't made me want a CS-30, but it has definitely made me want to spend some serious time learning to compose like that.

Love my CS30, i bought it in 1981 for £50, in fact the synth was cheaper than that because the price included a guitar amp!
One groovy feature is the 'Hold' button on the sequencer. this prevents the CV from the keyboard being sent to the sequencer (if the sequencer is set to receive this CV) The CV from the keyboard determines the pitch of the sequence so you can play the sequence in any musical key and when you find a key you like press HOLD and the sequence will play in that key while you play a melody over it, kinda hard to explain but fun. I could say a lot more about this wonderful machine but i'll leave it to Alex.

Excellent educational and entertaining video as always! I've always been puzzled by the differences between the CS-30, CS-30L and CS-15. The CS-15 has separate CV/gate ins for channel 1 and 2, and while the CS-30s omit this they do feature stereo outs. One would think that the top model in the range would feature both? Also, the omission of the CS-30L's volume and filter an CV/ins in the CS-30 are a slight shame. I used to own a CS-30L and found it incredibly intriguing, while at the same time extremely well-behaved. I love finding areas of unpredictability in synths, and the only area I found this in the 30L was when running the two filters in series, and cranking the resonance in both. Despite my grumpy and irrelevant nitpicking, the early CS synths are all wonderful oddballs from an era when the monosynth architecture still wasn't set in stone. Just lIke the SH-5, the DV-800, the 100F and others, they have a unique architecture and flavour.

Very cute little ditty which explained the unit quite nicely ! Thanks for the entertaining look into a Synth that I
Passed on, during those years while
we were bombarded with an over load of many less expensive Synths
than our fav's Moog, Seq. Circuits,
Oberhiem & Voyetra all made in the
USA. I did own a CS40, it was the first Synth I saw that allowed you save your patches & duo phonic the layout was very similar to a Mini Moog & gave a false sense that it
    had the same abilities.
Sadly the one I took home was not
working properly ? Upon my return to
my local gear shop One of the very 1st Profit 5's had just landed & being
a close friend of the store. Plus one
of their Synth Guru's who they often
wud call me in to do a proper demo to help them close sales & one of those guys who hung out, allot I mean too much that I finally became
a part of the Staff members.
I also had privileges few other had
(such as) buying my equipment at
dealer cost. Because if I had one I wud dig deep & cud soon know any
product as well as the factory reps & tech's. The Profit 5 was just what I had been dreaming of ( a 5 voice )
Mini Moog with patch memory and
more. I fell in love with it giving up on the CS40. But a yr later I also pur chased a CS80. Also Tarkus 1 Bass
    pedals Freemen Strings, Arp Odds,
CP30 piano, Fender Rhodes, a Wurly
    2x 760 Leslies, 2 Pro Ones, 2 Moog
Prod o ge's, ouch with many stomp boxes & pro audio effect units. I also
owned 2 YC Organs, a single & a dual keybd version both were great I later switched Kawai built me a home organ in a flight case. Plus the Korg DW6000 & 8000 Oberhiem Matrix 6, Kawai K3, K5, infact Kawai asked me to come join their Sales & Marketing team. Yes I was the one Piggie who they sent to market for the next 10 yrs I became sales manager. My last job, stop was at Kurzweil where I expanded my Synth collection further owning many of the flag ship models we made & a few prototypes. I have thinned out the flock over the yrs. Keeping only
the most lovely ones that have MIDI
my mixer needs came from the UK
as I was also a Studio Master sales manager here in the US. again I did
enjoy your CS30 & Kawai / Tes demo

Yamaha was so ahead of their time back then. Really pushing the envelope of what analog could do and it's no wonder they pivoted into FM as it really was the next frontier.
Also worth noting that old Yamahas seem to be practically bomb-proof. I have a number of old Yammies from the 70's and 80's, from various ranges of price and they all still work flawlessly.
Great video. Very inspiring. And the song ABOUT a synthesizer that didn't seem to really feature any synthesizer sounds was pure genius.

Haha! :D Quite possibly the best synth overview I have ever seen! The 1st few minutes with the synth scene was epic, then the feature song took over and it become even more epic (epicer, if anybody counts), then the full musical demo with that huggy bear bass was the most epic (epicest for connoisseurs)! :D Brilliant work!

It's crazy how the lesser known synths sometimes, many times in fact, turn out the be the most versatile in depth designs. I've LOVE to see someone make a mono synth like this these days. Don't know any off hand though. Very quirky and lovely tunes as usual. : )

Apart from sounding fantastic, these early CS synths are built so incredibly well that it puts most modern gear to shame. My CS-10 is 43 years old and feels like it will easily outlast all the rest of my gear, and even me. I got it for $250 because the 5/10/15 are all underrated (people have recognized the value of the 30 by now). Great synths.

Lucky you! I had to pay my CS-15 a few years ago 3x as that here by chance in a local shop. The previous owner kept it unused for many years. It was checked, of course. Though now 2 keys need a stronger push to make sound but it is a tank and I love it to bits. I reiterate once again, you guys abroad have no idea how lucky you are to get used gear for cheap. Here in Italy it only happens once every 10 blue moons ;)

Inflation can be a blessing if you have some foresight. I don't think I've ever owned anything music wise that really ballooned in value but I only buy used anyway so I can usually offload them for what I paid in the first place. Hopefully the world catches on to the ESX-1's status as the bang for your buck sampling groovebox king, so I can recoup my losses on overpaying for a really really clean one 🙃
