  • A short video for you guys today, but hopefully an interesting one. As you know both Winnie and Wilma went eventing a couple of weekends ago, so I thought it would be fun to compare their cross country rounds side-by-side. I'll discuss Winnie's hiccup through the water a little more, and also how I was trying a new tactic with Wilma to lead to a more confident round. Let me know if you enjoy this style of video, and of course which horse you would rather tackle a cross country course with. Don't forget to like, comment and subscribe to stay up-to-date with all of our pony adventures.
AD| A massive thank you to Equireel for providing these videos, they are the most amazing learning tool, so I will leave the link to their website down below. Whether you have an event coming up, or you want to re-live one from the past, they are well worth checking out as they have a huge archive of thousands of rounds.

At the water fence judges are usually told that the horse can go sideways but not back and because she kept moving probably saved her.

I think Winnie being a home bred her connection to you is strong and gives her the confidence she is showing. Wilma and you are still developing this bond which in my experience takes up to a couple of years for it to become unbreakable. Both mares are giving you their the current best and this will continue to improve as they mature.

Good rounds on green horses. You are taking on a lot with these two young talented steeds. Especially when you think that you have not had years and years of lessons and exhibiting on a highly broke horse. You are both teaching and learning, doing both well. Many riders have the leg up of being taught for years on dependable warriors and do not do as well as you do. Wilma needs your confidence and trust in different places than Winnie. Adjusting to that is not easy. Give yourself more grace. You deserve it.

if i had to guess, i'd say I see winnie as more brave- like she'd get you in AND out of trouble. wilma to me seems more sensible and I think she'll really hone your skills by forcing you to trust yourself so she can trust you as well. once that bridge is built, I think she'll be a real top level horse.

Now before anyone has a go because I will critique or may sound as though I disagree, Meg asked for comment and it is with lots of input that we make our way in the world.
Two very different mares, Winnie is the gang ho go get um girl who will find her way round most things with her huge scope and ability. She doesn't care about the pull you tend to have prior to a fence because she is going with or without you. Wilma on the other hand, has lost her lovely naive acceptance and I fear has been adversely affected by your pull and push prior to a fence because as you state she is a way more sensitive mare and needs a hand holding but not a 'catastrophic" arrangement prior to a fence. She has learned over this short time to question and second guess and be way more alert if not almost defiant about moving forward. For me, and take this as you will, I would go back to allowing her to enter a fence with a contact but completely on her own to find her stride so that she begins to get it that you are there but she can do this. These are tiny fences and she can mess up or sail out on a long one with little to no bother. Soon she will have her own eye in and rely not only on you but mostly on herself which is exactly what is require across the country. My choice Wilma. She will go further in the long run and has a real touch of class. Winnie is a stunning pony club champs horse who could take a youngster miles. But hey if I am honest I always had mine around the 17hh mark !

That's so interesting! I feel that Wilma is the PC horse--pretty simple and basic, without a big jump but, once confident, will be reliable and easy for a kid. Winnie is more like Jam--big jump, big personality.

Absolutely. I do think trying to hold Wilma in a box will lead to what is happening to Bear. She doesn’t have a choice. Whinny is Whinny and will just go. She’s an excitable pony from what I’ve seen of the show vlogs. I really do not think trying to contain Wilma is going to help. Like you have said, she’ll most likely start to second guess and unsure if the striding is truly right or not, leading to a big refusal sometime in the future if the path is continuing to go the way it is. I do hope both mares do well. Both have ability and a want to please, just one more uncaring than the other.

I did not see a step back, only side to side while she looked at the water. Maybe she thought the water looked to her like a big black hole she’d fall into. In the end she trusted you which is great. Letting her explore was such a good idea. I have gun dogs who love to swim but faced with the clear water of a swimming pool think they’re bottomless. As cloudy as it was there maybe was a reflection that spooked her as an alternative explanation.

These looked great! I feel Wilma takes the edge slightly for me but only as that looked like the more confident round from the start. However, I do feel the water caused problems for both horses as they both went quite green after, especially Winnie, as she in particular took longer to settle back into that rhythm. But honestly, both horses jumped the course really well, you ride what's underneath you and the way you dealt with the water was handled well!! good rounds from both x

Re: the stop at the water - I fence judge in NZ so rules may be different to BE, but it was explained to us by the TD (Technical Director, approves the course design and enforces the rules on cross country) was that a stop counts when the horse loses all forward motion - eg when the shoulders stop moving forward. BUT only when you can tell the horse is visibly locked on to the fence - ears forward, eyes locked on, etc. In NZ you would’ve been given a refusal for that, I would’ve felt terrible giving you one 😂

Winnie's my girl. She has a better natural jump and uses her hind end better over fences. The water will come! You need to get her someplace where you can go in and out from a million different angles, stay in the water for long minutes, and just make it boring. 🙂Wilma is sweet but I guess she seems a little blah in comparison. Not in a bad way--just less personality and less natural jump.

I agree with all the comments about the terrific job you did with 2 babies and also very different types of rides. They both definitely have talent and you can really see Jammy’s influence coming through in Winnie now 😁 I think you’ve done a great job and would love to see more side by side videos.
I personally have ridden bold/sometimes saucy and also emotionally sensitive/cautious horses and prefer the latter. While I don’t love spookiness, when it comes from lack of confidence, it is easier to work through than bull-headed sauce. Just a personal preference. I am currently riding 2 (one 13.2hh pony and one 16.1hh Canadian) who are both smart and sensitive. Both can be looky/worry but now have enough trust to THINK instead of mindlessly react.
Similar to Wilma, both highly prefer to be ridden in a connected and collaborative way, as did my former spooky boy. I look forward to reading if anyone else found a similar trend!

She has a very good, classy jump and she looks like she is just stepping over the fences, which is what you want, isn’t it? She hasn’t been doing this very long, it will all mesh and solidify soon enough. ( I say this because I am schooling a five year old, who is not as far along as Wilma. So I have some experience to go with my opinion). You’re so lucky to be able to have so many horses to Event on….❤

What a great video! I love direct comparisons. I've been a Team Winnie fan for several years. When she gets to "water? No problem" she's on her way to hundred cm. I do think Wilma has become more attentive and focused. Wilma clearly has enough scope for anything you want to ride. She's had less than a year with you (and we don't know how much hacking out) so though she trusts you in general, she's just not sure of herself when given the chance to make some of her own decisions. Maybe some hacking out with very, very light contact, so she's less worried when you're not doing all the "keeping her together."..eventually it's still her job to carry herself as she gets still stronger. (This comes from someone who started riding on western horses on natural terrain, where I was taught originally to ride with a loose rein--very different--but trail horses and cow horses do learn to judge terrain and stay balanced for it when not "helped" too much. Now, riding a little Paint, I do use more contact when I did as a youngster, but only as much as he needs to go where I want him to, and lightly adjust for the steep downhills, where with his build (low neck set) he could easily get strung out. )
I think maybe Winnie has inherited Jam's confidence (water being the only exception, but it'll come.) Has she ever slipped and fallen when the field you have is quite wet? Maybe in a puddle? You might not have noticed. That might be a reason. Could you possibly haul her to a beach (e.g. that one in Cornwall? I know it's a long way for you) and let her find out riding with friends that going through water is fun..) They're both beautiful young mares, clearly talented for what you want them to do.

I think Winny would not have gotten 20 as she didn’t take a step backwards, I have judged a lot of water! I feel Winny would be more fun and confident, also better with your type of riding!! Wilma definitely is more sensitive so a tougher ride and will take a bit more to build confidence! You do great with both❤️ I feel you will get on more with Winny!!!

Have you thought about trying the FEI legal mini blinkers for Wilma?

They both did great but for my riding style I would favor Winnie despite her slight aversion to water. I know that this is nosy but how did they both place?

I think they both did a great job and your insights are spot on. When they and you see a good distance they both have a lovely jump. Having ridden TBs and TB crosses most of my life Wilma’s parentage is always going to be a part of what will make her wonderful and will also make her challenging. Once she trusts herself and you she will be perfect! Winnie is a different girl. Just as lovely (in some cases better) than Wilma. Jam is her momma after all. You are right about the water. Just spending a lot of time in as much water as you can. I always feel these horses are so incredible to jump into what could very well be (in their eyes) a twelve foot deep pond! Once she understands she will never be put in that situation, she will be fine. They are both green, both honest and do their best. Spooky may always be a bit in Wilma’s make up but consistency will make up for it. Loved this vlog so much! BTW i have a lot of laundry to do so when you are finished…

I'm ancient 👵, and in back in the Jurassic days the 'rule' for a refusal at that sort of jump was if the horse turned its back to the jump, or reared.
At some point (when we stopped riding dinosaurs) they could tap dance with their fore feet all they wanted (just causes time faults) but if they stepped back with their hind feet, then that was a refusal (dunno about rearing or spinning, but I'd assume they're still classed as refusals).

I jump judge in the US at unrecognized, lower level events. In our briefing we are told that, for jumps without height, a horse stepping back is a refusal. Doesn’t matter if they go sideways, or the length of time it takes. We are also told, when in doubt, give the benefit of the doubt to the rider. Not sure what the rules say for BE, but I did not see your horse step back. Well done bringing these talented youngsters along slowly and carefully! A lot better than rushing them into a problem then trying to fix the problem.

I think Wilma is more sensible, she is thinking which makes her look. Winnie seems to just be going but not thinking so she over jumps more because she doesn't see things until they happen. I'd rather ride Wilma, I like horses who think and have a conversation with me so we can build a partnership and trust. It can make a horse seem spooky though if you don't keep communication open. I'm not sure that makes her a good event horse though which is interesting to me as a non eventer. P.s. saw your color debate with Winnie on Insta, she's not got the roan gene. She's a bay going grey. UK horse colors are confusing as heck.

both mares are teaching you to ride more forward - which is the opposite to Jammie now she has confidence. Its doing wonders for you, but that will make it harder for switching back to Jammie.
Wyn is slower because that will be coming through from Jammie - but as such she has Jammie's nature that once she gets her confidence she will flip to the "I got this" kind of riding.
For Wilma, she may always look to be more equitation styled in her approach to "caution before gung-hoah" so will rely on her long Thoroughbred canter stride around the country, so you will have to be mindful that time may be a factor for her as a payoff for being cautious🧐

Re: water - I don’t think she took any steps backwards, and I think the jump judges start counting a few seconds down before counting it as refusal if horse is taking some forward steps - so def a judgement call but can see why they didn’t give you faults - if had been a championship course they might have given faults - that would be my take on it -
Good for you for how you rode that!

I really liked the rounds. Winnie has had issues with water, you know it, you'll work it, she'll get past it. She's carrying some weight too, getting a bit big which could be youth, young horses put weight in weird places during these developmental years. If I can offer it, I'd slim her down, nothing drastic, but shoot for a 20-25lb loss just to give her some help because I see the weight going to her back end and flanks and the "pop" she's always had with her back end seems to have lost it's bounce and I'd totally, if she were in my barn, blame baby fat and do some butt building exercises and take off a bit of her daily ration, again, not much, it's not bad, she's just a natural athlete who doesn't have to try as hard to get over the jumps and she's a bit lazy because it's not hard for her. Mind challenges to sharpen her interest in her work and some uphill jumps and water work and she just doesn't need much, she's so talented and just a baby still.
Wilma also shows "Baby" stuff but also displays she's got more work under her belt than Winnie with her adjustments and when your confidence catches up with your talent Meg, I think really, you have a pair of superstars there, I really do and watch out eventing world when the three of you make it "gel" and those two bays turn into the stars they're hurrying toward being!
Finally, you asked who I would want for Cross Country myself? I don't ride anymore myself, I'm disabled, I teach. BUT, when I was riding, I was a "Baby Builder" at my barn and usually rode the greenest of the green because I have this relaxed...never get upset sort of way to me and nothing the babies did ever bothered me or put me off. So...I'd ride Winnie. For my students? I think most of them would do best on Wilma, because Wilma takes less forward riding and has less "stop" in her in general and my students would do better learning to hold her together than how to bring Winnie forward and still keep her from being on her forehand too much...that's not easy to balance, and because Winnie is so green, that's just where she is and most of my students, especially the younger ones, wouldn't handle that well.

Just for your info. Horses can't see red, it's all shades of grey to thrm. They can see green and blue, white can spook them a bit because it's brighter but they should be ok with red.
