  • Trails of Cold Steel 3 is the third entry in Nihon Falcom's Trails of Cold Steel series. Rean Schwarzer is now the Ashen Chevalier and instructor at Thors Military Branch Campus in Leeves. With a new Class VII, and trouble brewing in Erebonia, will they be able to stop Giliath Osborne?
    It took me 117 hours to finish Trails of Cold Steel 3 on PS5. I have a lot of thoughts on the game ranging from the new Class VII to the return of certain characters to how truly annoying Cedric is. Join me as I dig deep into a spoiler filled video on Nihon Falcom's, Trails of Cold Steel 3.
    The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III (英雄伝説えいゆうでんせつ 閃の軌跡センノキセキⅢ) is the eighth installment in the Trails series and the third game of the Erebonia arc.
    The game was released on September 28, 2017 on PlayStation 4. Publisher NIS America published the game in North America and Europe on October 22, 2019, and in Australia on October 29, 2019.

    Thanks for watching!
    Here’s a few things I forgot to mention (or left out for the sake of time).
    - Loved the mech fights in this one. Especially getting to use Class VII with the different Soldats. I love mechs so getting to use more of them in this game is always a major bonus for me.
    - Crimson Rosalia was a very cool addition. I had pictured her a little differently after reading Red Moon Rose but I like how she was a mysterious presence in the game. Really looking forward to seeing her develop more in CS4.
    - Actually getting to explore Crossbell in this game was just a huge treat! I loved running around the city and just hanging out. As much as I liked the new locations (like Ordis), there’s just something about Crossbell.
    - Meant to add in b roll of Musse being Duchess Mildine but, apparently, I didn’t have footage of that 😅

    So she wasn't in the original crossbell arc (Juna) but there was no cold steel back then, cold steel was already complete when they began these remakes, so they went back and added in characters like Towa(at the trade conference) , Gideon (liberation front), Juna, and i think a few other things. I just read about them though I played the OG titles, not the ones recently released
    Edit: Osbourne's build up was immaculate. His first appearance was friggin trails in the sky the third. Him having a meeting with olivert and Khloe in one of the star doors

    Totally agree with preferring new Class VII, the smaller group really helps to bring out their personalities more, plus the fact that there are only 3 members at the beginning gives you time to get to know them better before introducing Musse and Ash.

    Death is kind of hard to talk about in the Cold Steel Arc until you beat the final game. But I will say this regarding death, it's not so much about the impact of death, it's about how it's overcome. It all ties into what I believe the main theme of the Cold Steel arc is.
    And that theme is why I think original Class 7 is still the best, although I do absolutely love New Class 7. The theme of Cold Steel is that we are stronger together as a community. And while that is generally the theme of the Trails series, it's at the core of what makes Cold Steel great in my opinion. That's why for me, the size of Class 7 is absolutely necessary.
    But I do understand why that may not work for everyone. More to discuss once you beat Cold Steel 4!!!!

    I liked how CS1&2 did the social stuff. I grew up in a small town and remote area and it felt much more realistic to me. Your good friends with most of the class but you are very good friends with a few people. I used my social points this way, Mostly did Elliot, Fie, Alisa. With Towa, Gaius, Emma being the ones I would hangout with if the other 3 where not around. To me this made me fell like I got to pick would be my bestfriends, and I was even more attached to them because of this.

    Minor corrections:
    Altina is not part of the Ironbloods. She was part of the intelligence division, though.
    Also, there have definitely been more chars die besides Loewe and Otto, just they've been antagonists.
    Aaaand... don't forget that Osborne made his first appearance in Sky 3rd, and has been being setup as far back as Sky SC.
    I find it kind of amusing that you mentioned Anton being in all the games, but didn't realize that he is not in CS3. 😆(He also wasn't in Azure, fwiw.)
    Lastly, you're getting very focused on Cedric how he is in CS3, but don't forget him in CS1 & 2. Yes, he represents giving into your worst aspects, but there is some amount of tragedy to it too. He was shoved into the Testa-Rossa at the end of CS2, and that trauma/taint in addition to Osborne egging along him just kind of corrupted him.

    Good review as always. Watching your reactions to certain events in your streams is also really entertaining.
    A few things I want to talk about:
    Death in the series may look like it doesn't last or doesn't have an impact, but I disagree here. It does have a big impact when it happens. Let's just take into consideration Crow's death. This one has a big impact on Rean and shapes how his life continues from that point forward. He actually failed his main goal on Cold Steel 2 which was reunite Class VII, as well as Towa and company with Crow. He has to carry that during the time between games and for the entire Cold Steel 3.
    What I mean with this is that death in a work of fiction, even if it's reversed at some point, can still have a big impact storywise. Also Falcom is being cautious. This is a long-term series, which means that they can't kill their characters so soon. They can still make use of them in future arcs.
    About the Cold Steel anime, I recommend watching it and judging it yourself. It's bad, that's true, and I don't recommend watching it after CS2, since it spoils the "North War" background from CS3. As bad as it is, it stills adds some lore and details about North Ambria. And a lot of characters do make a cameo.
    The back-washing "complain" (which I know is mostly a joke)... I do get it, but it's important to understand that this is a game from and for a different culture. Back-washing in japan, hot springs and things like that are a common ocurrence there, speciallly among family.
    Cedric being as annoying as he is in CS3, is actually the point of his character. I won't defend his decissions in the game, but he wasn't like that in CS1-2. He got some important trauma in CS2, and has been manipulated ever since. As a matter of fact, for me at least, I felt sadness to see what he has become.
    Same goes for other, usually not liked charactes in the series. Angelica for instance, is not as bad a character as it's usually said. Her character has 2 sides, there is a serious one that usually gets overlook when refering to her, which shows during the confrontation with her father in CS2, or when she decides to go to the cementery to check on Crow. She's also a Taito practitioner like Zin, Walter and Kilika.
    Then, there is her other side, which is when she flirts with female characters. I also feel it's annoying, but I never took her seriously (at least not with her japanese voice actor).
    Regarding combat, I like the changes they did in CS3, but it's clearly unabalance. CS4 does balance combat quite a bit, and it's perfected in Reverie. Looking forward to see what you think about combat then.
    Anyway, long post from me as always, sorry :)

      @stratfor140 9 месяцев назад +1

      THIS! This is the point I'm trying to make regarding Deaths in the series. Even if it's reversed later, the moment itself and the consequences of it afterwards are still impactful. Like, after experiencing CS2's ending and the ramifications of these events for Class VII, how you can say after playing CS3 that they ruined it ? It's important for the characters, and you still felt emotions during this scene, nothing is going to change that. That's like saying Infinity War's ending is ruined because everyone who was snapped returned in Endgame; No, that's not how this works, the characters developped following that ending and you felt emotions watching it, and the events of Endgame don't change this experience.

    • @TheTheoLogan898
      @TheTheoLogan898  9 месяцев назад +3

      Not taking away how it changed Rean. What I’m getting at is how I personally respond to a death in a work of fiction. As I said in the video, it just tells me that death isn’t permanent like it should be. This will probably be one of those things where we won’t agree on, that’s fine. But if more characters start coming back from the dead in CS4, I’m just going to chuckle and quote Dr. Malcom from Jurassic Park: “Well, there it is.”

    A ways to go before you’re there, but I can’t wait for you to get to Reverie. It’s in my top 3 for the series and I am confident it will be in yours too.
    The Harem gets worse now in CS4. It’s very annoying but future games get A LOT better about characters and their harems

  • @stratfor140
    @stratfor140 9 месяцев назад +1

    That was a good review, I also watch your streams and I'm excited for what you'll think of Cold Steel 4 because it's very divisive for some reason.
    Though, regarding the "Death means nothing" complaint, I heavily Disagree, just because it's sometimes reversed later doesn't mean it was meaningless, for the characters or for the plot. Takes the last two avengers movies for exemple, would you say that since Endgame exists, the ending of Infinity War was meaningless ? Of course not, it was a shock for us and everyone else and it developped the characters and plot into directions we didn't expected. It's the same for the ending of CS2, even if CS3 showed that Crow was indeed alive, The impact of his death at the time, whether it was on us, the characters, or the plot was enormous; it's his death and last words that (along with the disbandment of the program) inspired Old Class VII to branch out and specialize in order to find a solution against the direction Erebonia is heading, which was a big part of CS3. His death was literally what drove forward Old Class VII in the sequels. CS2's ending was also a reality check for Class VII, who were talking happily about bringing Crow back with them to graduate, and were essentially manipulated the whole way through by Osborne and Rufus into siphoning the Noble's influence and credibility, something that's also a plot point of CS3.
    So yeah, I take offense on the fact that now that Crow came back to life, it makes the ending meaningless; the impact felt at the time is still striking, nothing will change that, and the consequences of it, be it characters or plot, still lingers on in the story.
    And one last thing about the people that came back to life in CS3. If you noticed, there's always one point of commonality between them: They all have Divine Knight, I'll let you marinate on that one.

    • @TheTheoLogan898
      @TheTheoLogan898  9 месяцев назад

      I never stated the ending of CS2 was meaningless. Nor am I saying it (Crow’s death) didn’t have an effect on Rean (or the rest of Class VII). That’s an entire plot point in CS3 in how they’re seeing a ghost, so to speak, lol
      I honestly didn’t really feel anything when Crow died in CS2, primarily because of the bonding event mechanic that, as I said in this review and others, kept me from connecting with all of the members of Class VII.
      My point is that if death isn’t permanent, and we are going to start bringing characters back, then we need to find some alternative that’s going to get me to react the same way the characters in the story do. As I said in another comment, I’d more characters start coming back from the dead, I’ll just laugh and quote Dr Malcolm from Jurassic Park: “Well, there it is”.
      Now, I will admit that the thought of those characters having Divine Knights is an interesting facet I hadn’t considered. That’ll be interesting to see how that works out as I continue through CS4.

  • @pite9
    @pite9 7 месяцев назад

    I had to wait a year between CS3 and 4, and it was brutal.
    In order to stay contained to this game, I won't comment on future games, but how CS3 and previous games handles death is perfectly fine. I often see players nitpicking about plot events in this series based on them not understanding the full picture. And it's not because you haven't paid attention to the plot. The issue is that they won't reveal why these characters had to be brought back until a bit into the next game. This is common in this series and that's why it's crucial when playing these games to keep an open mind and to speculate on your own, trying to fit it all together on your own.
    I get that keeping Crow dead would have made his story more impactful, but this was never an option because it would have broken the main plot. It was Crow's return that helped me put the pieces together. I realized that there was a special circumstance about him that could explain it, and based on other similar circumstances, I confirmed the theory. I don't think you're supposed to believe that Crow and Rutger staged their deaths. They actually did die, but were then somehow revived.
    Rean, Fie and the rest, and us players being left in the dark about their revival makes sense based on the circumstances. They themselves most likely had no clue that they'd return.
    Osborne did stage his death, but this was part of his own schemes.
    Angelica's rumored death was mostly about reinforcing to the players the narrative of Towa's group of friends falling apart. It was never confirmed and it had no impact on the story.

    Since everyone getting their opinions on death in the series, I gotta get my quip in too!
    The main issue with death is exclusive to just the Cold Steel Saga. Before that, the Sky Arc and Crossbell Arc have handled this subject pretty well. For pretty much every protagonist in the series they've had some sort trauma (death of family). These deaths have served to enhance character development and the overall growth of a person. There have been certain instances where they 'revived' but this has been exclusively in dream sequences or places like Phantasma where we know they are still dead but just brought back to remind characters of their growth. When narratively done well, as in Zero and Azure where the SSS did fail in their mission to take down Joachim. The player doesn't get whiplashed when they see them get revived because it is explained so well within the context of the story.
    Unlike Cold Steel's civil war where we barely got to see many casualities. Sky SC when the Enforcers invade Grancel, they each take out a squadron of soldiers and you don't even question that they aren't severely disabled or dead after that. We also get to see Red Constellation practically decimate the Crossbell Guardian force as well as Gideon's squad and you're pretty sure those people aren't alive after that. Shirley quite literally solo's a squad with a tank and you can't tell me the people in the tank didn't die. Not to mention just the general destruction they caused such as the IBC building getting destroyed and therefore you can't use it for the rest of the game.
    Now compare that to the Civil War in Cold Steel, the only real destruction we ever got to see was Celdic and whereby the sole casualty was the man, the myth, the legend, Market Manager Otto. The whole set up for the Civil war was great, a war between the nobles and the reformists. The breakdown of the long running class system of Erebonia. But unlike the previous Arcs... we never got to see much happening elsewhere if Rean and co wasn't there to witness it.
    As for major character deaths that we've seen so far. Crow is a big one in CS2 (provided you saw his bonding events) due to all the events after that point which was a 'soft' cliffhanger with plenty of questions. Osborne also 'cheated' death too which left a conundrum that wasn't explained until the end game events of CS3. But it still begs the question, how is he still running around without a heart?
    In CS3 we have Angelica getting shot. Olivier, Toval and Victor blowing up. Millium getting mauled. However due to the simple fact that people can cheat death, these deaths are questioned. The biggest problem is that all these questions are tied with one of the most brutal cliffhangers the series has done. There's also merit for these people to be around and also for some to just stay dead.
    There's something Falcom is trying to achieve by having Crow, Rutger, Arianrhod, Osborne who all pilot Divine Knights being alive. But what could it be?
    But in turn, Angelica, Olivier, Toval, Victor and Millium all staying dead would as stated earlier, boost certain characters development and growth. With Olivier, having sheathed his sword, his wings shackled and now his life? taken. Who else is there that can stand up to Osborne? Not even Ouroboros can stand up to him; they gave up and sided with him. Victor being dead would just boost Laura's character arc even further as she is trying to live up to her father's legacy and also Lianne Sandlots legacy as the Successor to the Arseid style. There's more that could be said for the others too.
    How this all wraps up in CS4 will have to be something Logan has to Play Trails to find out!

    • @TheTheoLogan898
      @TheTheoLogan898  9 месяцев назад

      Admittedly, I jumped to the last paragraph and can say that, given what I just learned in CS4, my complaint now seems a bit premature 😅. I need to just trust Falcom.

    I have to correct the general consensus about death here. Yes, major character deaths are severely cut down after Sky 2, but deaths do occur. As in we know for a fact General Aurelia was decimating armies and the Jaegers of the Noble Alliance were trigger happy in their scuffles with the Imperial Army and CS3 confirms the Western Front of the Civil War was rather bad with plenty of commoners dying. Basically death happens but because the games hyper focus on Class 7 they fail to showcase this.
    I do love the whole point that Rean pushing himself to the brink is also why a lot of death does not happens in the Cold Steel period because in the Crossbell Invasion and Northern Wars Rean is hailed as a hero BECAUSE he stopped the wars before they even truly began (by annihilating the forces of North Ambria and Calvard).

    My Problem with Cold steel III is that its being drawn out for the sake of the tripple A price tag. The need to be a mandatory 100 hour game for the sake of the price tag makes the game worse in my opinion. Stuff like talk with every person inside the ship and be done after 1-2 hours just to get the story moving is in my opinion too much. I am working fulltime and i can play like 2-3 hours a day but most of the time it felt like i made zero progress in some of those seasons.

    Biggest agree on preferring New Class VII. Not only was there not enough time to let many of the OG Class VII shine, many end up feeling superfluous or having wasted potential. Elliot and Emma are the biggest victims of that. Emma should've been the main female character of the series, guiding Rean as an Awakener. I have so many thoughts on how they could've done her and a lot of other story aspects better.
    But yeah, because it was a smaller cast, you were able to appreciate them more, even if they kinda come off bland or one note. I feel like Kurt never really finds his place or develops, but he's young, and you can tell he's trying to develop himself as a man, which isn't something that's wrapped neatly in a bow. He works as the dependable guy with internal dilemmas he deals with himself more than Gaius did. And Musse being hot for teacher is so constantly pushed that it feels like her only aspect, but thankfully there's enough time to see that there is more to her, caring about all her friends and being a schemer hiding her true face.
    Ash, Altina, and Juna are all great with no need for further explanation.

      The problem for Elliot, Kurt, Gaius, Machias and in a lesser way even for Jusis is:
      They cannot out cool Rean at any point because HAREM!!
      I know I am saying it in a very reductive way, but just do the mental gymnastics, remove the harem aspects from cold steel, and imagine what a gem it could have been?
      Relationships and character development like we had for Schera and Olivier, Agate and Tita, Estelle and Joshua, could have been poping out of the screen all over the place, but no, Rean had to be the top single alpha male cool kid always.
      Not saying that what we got is bad, not at all, Cold Steel is a great arc, but it could have been greater.
      Thankfully Falcom course corrected in Kuro no Kiseki, I hope you all enjoy it next year, I already did and it was awesome. Sky SC>Azure=Kuro>Reverie in my top three.

    The death thing is a bummer for sure. Though there are a bit more deaths you forgot about (you monster!). Weissman, vulcan, Gideon, uhh.. I think there was one more I had in mind before logging in to comment but now I forgot too lol.
    I'm surprised you like Zero more than Azure. I personally do as well and I thought I was the only one!
    Also everyone talks about how Kevin is done dirty by not being involved as much, but what about Ries? She's a cool ass character too! Poor Ries, she's forgotten even by the people complaining that Kevin is Forgotten =P.
    I wonder if you'll ever have time to re-play sky FC. Honestly that game is a riot when you replay it and you realize how much stuff it foreshadows right in front of your face without you realizing it on a first playthru.
    edit: I just posted and now i remember. Joachim is another death.

    Jrpgs are typically single player, personal experiences, not something you'd typically play with an audience, be it a stream audience or with your friend/wife/whatever there and what have you. Due to that, I think that the "awkwardness" factor of certain scenes would be multiplied many times over when experienced in a twitch stream setting compared to just by yourself in privacy, hence, it's not entirely valid criticism to bemoan such scenes. I never even noticed the "back washing" that has been repeatedly mentioned as that is common Japanese skinship found in all sorts of anime content. Maybe cultural differences are an issue. But either way, Musse's great and very flirty which is a positive!

    i agree about death having no meaning in cold steel. not only is there not nearly enough death, considering the massive constantly battles taking place, they try to fake death shit repeatedly that doesn't work because they overplay the hell out of it.
    and just like you i really hoped angelica had really died. usually japanese games don't put all this gay shit in games, but for some weird reason cold steel is full of it. but i knew at that point she'd be back, and her and george and crow and towa would all be best friends again.

    I agree that the way they handle death is pretty terrible. I understand they may be shooting for the fan service angle, but when 95% of characters that are "killed" return, the emotional impact is stripped. They could have used death as a way to prune the character bloat, too, in addition to shrinking the cast size.
    Too much backwashing going on. Really wish that would get toned down.
    The series is like a pretty solid piece of art, but someone snuck in at night and drew a mustache on it. I'll still enjoy the series, but I try not to look too much at the mustache.
