I love this drama. Shiyi's actions and hard work has finally paid off. It's because of her warm/forgiving nature that concubine Wen got a second chance. I really enjoyed seeing the character growth of Lingyi. Falling in love with Shiyi really changed his entire perspective. He became a hands on father. He started standing up to his overbearing mother. He fought tirelessly for her despite his mother's objections. The best part was his refusal to take in any more concubines. Such a beautiful/touching drama.
@D C He's a lot better than what she deserves. He put up with her scheming ways long before Shiyi entered the picture. Wen had every opportunity to change her relationship with Lingyi but all she cared about was using his power/prestige to help her corrupt family. She never gave a flying fig newton about him unless it was to gain his favor so she could continue to help her family. A family that used her as a pawn from day one when her family used blackmail in order to get him to marry her as a concubine. They wanted access to his name/power in order to benefit their illegal activity. She doesn't care about him....he even watched her bartering with his other concubines during the time they were supposed to be mourning for his late wife....even when he did visit her... all she did was talk about money. He didn't want to celebrate her birthday in the first place....she used their son to get him to come. She also tried to use the rain to get him to stay. If she showed any interest in him/tried to get to know him....instead of using him things might've been different. He didn't leave her to go and sleep with Shiyi....he left because he didn't want to spend the night with her/he happened to see Shiyi struggling to get up after her fall....he helped her back to her room/was going to leave but she did the unexpected/she apologized and admitted that she didn't want to lose him. As for admitting that he could've treated her better that was an honorable admission because in actuality he treated her...the way she treated him. She used the Xu family name to enrich the lives of her corrupt family...and she betrayed them to help her family after they were blackmailed for killing someone. She destroyed the gift meant for the Emperor...and act that could've gotten the entire family killed including her son...the one she claims to love so much...all to protect a family that abandoned her when she became useless to them because she couldn't manipulate Shiyi into working with them to defraud the people. He offered to take care of her... or allow her to live the life that she wanted...way better than what her family did....they turned their backs on her after she helped them solve their problem. He knew she had no backing/he offered to continue to take care of her. She plays a major role in how he treated her after he was forced to marry her for the provisions to feed his men. She used it as a business transaction/she treated him as such. She didn't try to change that until she realized that he was starting to fall in love with Shiyi. He treated her according to how she treated him.

This is my favorite drama, and first one I watched. Loved Shiyi and how smart she was and how she always got the Marquis to listen to her. All the concubines were jealous of her and she overcame soo many obstacles, and how the Marquis was always there for her. Shiyi definitely made the Marquis a much better person and more personable than he was at the beginning. Was nice they had the same thoughts at times.
They were great together. It's funny how neither of the concubines (with the exception of Lianfang) really cared for him until he fell in love with Shiyi. They were using his status to benefit his family or to take revenge. They never once tried to get to know him and that's the reason he was indifferent towards them. Concubine Wen was given a second chance because of Shiyi. I was pleasantly surprised when concubine Wen finally acknowledged Shiyi's worth

@@shontelagrone8713 I find that the relationship between the Marquis and his other concubines work both ways. Aside from Lianfang, they were all married for the sake of convenience during a day and age where a woman's primary responsibility is to produce offspring. Marriages were decided by parents and matchmakers, so the other concubines might have had about as much say in their marriage than Lingyi. Granted all the women had their own agendas, but women had far less freedom than men and were required to rely on their husband for everything and unlike Shiyi none of them had any initial plans to run away.
While the other concubines, initially don't seem too invested in the Marquis' interests, one could also argue that he didn't make much of an effort either. When Concubine Wen was listing the price of a single bowl of soup, Lingyi coldly brushed her off and told her to feed the soup to their son instead. He could have expressed his concern for the refugees who could not afford anything so extravagant like he did with Yuan Niang or comment on her head for investments like he did with Shiyi. As the daughter of a merchant family, Concubine Wen was married into the Xu family as the result of a business transaction, but she's also shown to have the makings of a decent merchant herself. She understands pricing and she knows how to a deal, but her skills are limited by her standing in the harem. The harem is the only outlet where she can display her skill, she can't apply them beyond the harem because her actions would have been considered shameful. Before Lingyi found out that Shiyi was helping the female refugees develop a trade, he initially frown on her displaying herself in public. The only reason he ended supporting her was because their ambitions often aligned. He even commented that Shiyi would have been very successful "if she was a man". While Concubine Wen has shown to be an opportunist, she makes the most of her current situation rather than expanding her horizons, and her horizons are managed by the man of the house.
Then there's Concubine Qin, during her first interactions with the Marquis, there is already some awkward tension. He tries to cut the tension by commenting on a painting in her room, but her lack of knowledge on the artwork makes it difficult for him to hold the conversation. Concubine Qin was sold into the Xu family when she was young, she was never given the same opportunities as the other concubines and she had been estranged from Lingyi for some time. The Marquis has never discriminated people for their background and status, but he's also never attempted to bridge the gap between Shiliu and the other women in the harem. Concubine Qin's only noticeable characteristic is her lack of a formal education, but the fact that she was able to live as the Ou family's spy for so long shows that she is easily underestimated. Her ability to read people rivals Shiyi's and they both share the ability to remain calm under pressure, but while Shiyi exudes a powerful presence, Shiliu maintains a more demure composure. Concubine Qin's hatred for the Xu family may have been caused by the Great Madame, but the Marquis didn't seem to do much to assuage her pain. Lingyi told her that while he understands her pain, he advised her to move on. It could be argued that since it was also Lingyi's child, he genuinely shares her grief, however, the Marquis also has responsibilities that often tends to primarily distract himself from his overwhelming family. Shiliu, on the other hand, had no responsibilities, she wasn't trying to secure a investments for her family like Concubine Wen, she wasn't trying to insert herself in a more powerful position in the harem like Lianfang and she wasn't trying to establish an independent venture like Shiyi, all she has is her anger and pain. She had the opportunity to let go of all of her hatred when the matter of Fengquing's adoption arose. When Shiyi first suggested having Concubine Qin raised him, he agreed that she was an apt candidate, but when they were reviewing the adoption candidates, he was concerned by Shiliu's lack of a formal education, beyond that he didn't seem to have any other complaint. Lingyi could have tried to find an alternative solution for Shiliu or maybe even given her more responsibilities in the household to show that while he did not love her, she was still valued, but he didn't seem to consider how his decisions would affect her on an emotional level. As a woman, Shiliu's primary responsibility was to give birth to an heir, but she had been robbed of that before she even had a chance
The Marquis also seems to have a very close minded opinion on women. Even if you don't take into the account the concubines' hidden agendas, his initial views towards women is almost as old fashioned as his mother's like when they both found out about Shiyi's sideline at the Xian Ling Pavilion. Both mother and son believed that a woman displaying herself in such a public manner was inappropriate. He didn't even realize how important embroidery really was to her, relegating it to a pastime. Throughout the show, Lingyi doesn't develop a higher opinion of women, he just develops a higher opinion of Shiyi, but she isn't the only ambitious woman in his harem she's just the only one whose ambitions aren't directly related to him. It wasn't until Concubine Qin's death, that he was forced to reevaluate his attitude towards women. In an era where arranged marriages and harems are the prevailing fashion, love isn't essential to a relationship, but there is something to be said about being considerate on both sides of the marriage.
@@ThePrincessCH I agree. Lingyi was just as responsible for maintaining a relationship with the women in his harem. Unfortunately he could never find a common ground with either of the women. Shiyi was a little different because she actually took time to care about his feelings which is something he never really experienced before so that opened the door for them to develop a relationship. If Lingyi hadn't witnessed firsthand how they were fighting over favors during the mourning period for Yuanniang he might've been a little more receptive to them. The feeling of being used as a chess piece was at the core of his indifference. He made the comment about women always scheming. He was so used to living in a vacuum where every woman including his own mother was constantly scheming. Living in such a manner will build distrust. Just like with the women dealing with a man that is constantly guarded against you will do the same. The lack of communication was also a key factor in the breakdown of their relationships. First impressions are often the hardest to get rid of...Lingyi suffered from this ailment...lol
Lingyi became distrustful of Wen because of her family's back alley deals they made with Yuanniang. So I can understand why he never showed any interest in her life beyond the harem. If he did connect with her on business then it's a sure bet that she would've passed this information on to her family. She was so loyal to them even though they really didn't care about her. She definitely had a head for business/it could've been the thing that brought her/Lingyi closer. Maybe if her family wasn't scheming behind the scenes he would've trusted her. Her apparent love for money was another draw back that created problems with their relationship. Lingyi is a very principled man/he values service over money. Unfortunately Wen didn't get the memo...lol
Qin was a silent killer. She was working to dismantle the Xu family for years/they never Once suspected that she was the traitor. I tell you when Shiyi arrived on the scene...things started to be revealed. They truly underestimated her/she did a lot of damage. She was the reason that Lingyi had such a hard time bringing down the Ou family. The enemy was hiding in plain sight. Honestly I'm not sure if she would've taken a different path if she was given the chance to raise Fengqing. It would've helped ease her pain but her hatred for the Xu family was rooted deeply in her soul. She had every right to resent the GM for causing her miscarriage/infertility. I would've wanted revenge too. The GM's lame a$$ excuse just didn't fly with me. Just because Lingyi hadn't married his legal wife yet was the excuse she used to justify what she did to her. However, she didn't use the same method with Wen...seeing as though Yu is older than Zhun. The GM randomly pick/choose which family drama she's going to support/which one she's going to oppose. She isn't very consistent at all.
Lingyi doesn't have a high opinion of women at all...but I think Shiyi is the reason for his change in attitude. It's the motivation that he needed to stand up to his mother...to give Shiyi the life that she desired. In the end her contribution establishing embroidery workshops gain recognition for the Xu family.
@@ThePrincessCH I agree. Their relationship should've worked both ways. He could've made more of an effort but he couldn't really accept how they became his concubines so he never tried to make it work. It wasn't the life that he wanted so it made it easier for him to keep his distance from them. It's Concubine Qin that got my sympathies because she was forced to marry him as an excuse to protect her reputation. Honestly I think the GM just used that as a way to get what she wanted. Her agenda has always been to keep the family lineage by providing as many off springs as possible. She didn't care about the methods she chose to ensure the future of the Xu family.. her only goal was to provide descendants. Qin was an innocent victim caught up in the GM's scheme.

The Sword and the Brocade is the name of the drama. You will love this one she is smart n not arrogant with it...nor is she annoying like some of the FL.....not that she is perfect same goes for the ML. Plus it has a bit of everything

Actually after she married into the family she was stripped of her power. The great Madam gave all the authority to Lianfang so it made it hard for her to deal with the concubines. They all looked down on her because she was an illegitimate daughter/the great Madam was leading the charge. Plus Shiyi had no desire to be involved in the family politics. She only married into the family to find her mother's killer. Once she gained the authority in the household she still treated them fairly. She was a kind and generous person. She was able to win them over because she had a pure heart.

太多的古裝戲，太多的感情線，太多的誇張，太多的不合情理...厭倦了這類戲劇。
知否其實都是這類戲劇。只不過知否劇情真的比這齣劇好太多，什麼劇情都環環相扣
