Johnny went to my church in Port Arthur, Tx. since i was born, and im now 16. Sat in the pew in front of me. He was a very nice guy and always led the songs!Miss you man and im watching over your grandkids! See you again at the golden gates someday.
Sixty-one years after first hearing the song, likely on the six-transistor (Wow!) portable radio that my folks bought me for a birthday present, I now know that "Running Bear" was written by The Big Bopper! Thank you, RUclips.
Johnny was kind enough to re-record Running Bear with me in 2010. It is included on the Bear Family Records 35th Anny Boxed Set. His Bear Family CDs are worth searching out. A true gentleman.... Missed greatly.
Love ya Johnny I know your up there with Grandma and all of your family like it was back in the sixties all of us at Grand mas!You are fabulous entetainer!Carl Edward
I'm only 40 and I still have the original LP my parents had! Love ALL the songs on the album! It's great to hear his voice is/was the same after all the years!!!! Didn't know he passed. Sad to hear! Thanx for sharing this great moment! Take care. - Johnny
I was fortunate enough to see him as a youngster. This was probably 8-10 years after he had a hit with Running Bear. I was able to hook up with him in Branson and he would stay in touch with me as he might be coming through the area. I remember him as nothing more than a gentleman. I was asking him about playing guitar for him on the road. He will truely be missed. GOD BLESS and REST IN PIECE MY FREIND.
I was at this concert in 2009 and that is The Vees backing him up. They are the sons of Bobby Vee. I later sawe himm in Clovis NM and he was so good. His voice was still very strong and was a great entertainer.
Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake Iowa. Was the last concert that Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper and Richie Valance did. In 1973 I was was a forest ranger at nearby Mcintosh Woods State Park. Went to the famous Surf Ballroom often.
Not sure why it happens, but I sing this song to myself once a day, in its' entirety. I don't remember starting to sing, at some point I'm just in the middle of it, and so I finish it. It kinda freaks me out.
Precious! Those who enjoy the "Running Bear" song and its lyrics, will likely enjoy seeing the same basic story updated into a poignant science fiction video on DUST: @
Basically Bobby Vees band - sons Tommy Vee on Bass and Jeff Vee on drums, Ar Kriegel on lead guitar, Marvin Short on sax, Jeff Olson on piano. They made a pretty good career being one of the truest, most authentic and energetic backing bands for acts of the 50s 60s era
Lol, o was born Dec 31, 1959, in NWY, u have know idea of what we faced for precious against Americans and Americans blacks white males and females. I’m Grandpa was a real SOB when it came to women, black. Native Americans! He was no hero in my mind!
I always think of this song ..as racial song.. hearing on the radio as kid during the sixty's..it still gets me..I had native friend made me see it as remark toward his people..how White's painted them in the movies.as they painted my people too.. White's playing us as well other cultures in the movies..it was at the time of white America..
@@GFPunch to you . but. you can't speak for the entire Native Americans across America. ----------- I stand by my opinion as to that song. its racists, it was white America.
People say he has still got it , to that I say... Did he ever really have it ? I am not sure why this popped up on my youtube channel . People truly think this is good ?
You don't have to watch even if it pops on your feed. It's as simple as that, like common dude have common sense if you don't want to watch something then don't
Sad disappointment for some who first heard and witnessed the singing of "Running Bear" on television ~1959. If an artist is going to perform a song, especially for a special occasion, please sing it the way people enjoyed it and paid money to hear it originally. And, to honor the author of the song- sing it the way it was written. For anyone who is going to react and reply defensively to me, please view the 1959 version of Mr. Preston performing this song on TV. The performance and song hugely affected my 6 year old brother then and afterwards. My brother tragically, suddenly died in 1978. He would have been disappointed, I'm sure, to hear the way the song was sung in this 2009 performance.
Johnny's gotten pretty up there at that point. I don't think he cared too much at that point since his time was almost up, also he probably couldn't remember each lyric word for word anymore so simply as he got older either.
I've heard a lot of rock and roll heroes sing in their old age and they weren't good anymore.. Johnny Preston? He still had it!! RIP man!
50+ years and he still has the voice

Great band and johnny in fine voice , why do we have to lose all the great people in the world . RIP Johnny

The cello player is pretty entertaining and of course a great song
Not meaning to disagree, but that is not a cello. It's a stand up bass. Quite a big difference.
Still going Johnny.
Rest in Peace Johnny
Great performance by all, and terrific sound.
Perfect in every way. Thanks for uploading :-)

To all you pro wrestling fans out there (like myself): This was the #1 song in the USA when Marty Jannetty came into the world (February 3, 1960).
Best one
This is a very sad death. R.I.P. Johnny Preston.
A beloved and magnificent talent. For my money, Johnny Preston also did the definitive version of Chuck Willis' monster classic, What Am I Living For.

Nice catchy song but people forget running bear and white dove are names from indigenous native American who are left behind
anyone got tips on employing a us solicitor to enable me to move overseas and my daughter and I to be back together again.
Hank lll's FcBk page sent me. I can see him covering this in a heavier style/Hank style.
Anybody know who the upright bass player is? Name of back up band?
Basically Bobby Vees band - sons Tommy Vee on Bass and Jeff Vee on drums, Ar Kriegel on lead guitar, Marvin Short on sax, Jeff Olson on piano. They made a pretty good career being one of the truest, most authentic and energetic backing bands for acts of the 50s 60s era
He is my teachers father
Music teacher or just regular teacher?

I can't tell if you're offended or just pointing that out about how you feel on it and still enjoy it?
He sounds great!
(the bassist is annoying, though)
This is just a live performance you should just watch the original version instead.
