  • westcoastdrumsh... Today we're putting the spotlight on Gregg Keplinger and his amazingly unique snares. Many drummers in the Washington area know the history of these drums, but we wanted to share with everyone else what they might be missing.

I inherited the brass from my dad, first brass snare I've ever had and am having trouble tuning and finding the right drum heads. Any advice?

Wondering how they'd be with die cast hoops?

Keplinger himself prefers just the basic Gibraltar triple flanged, as it keeps the drum super open and ringy. People have been known to modify with other hoops with great success, but they wont come standard with die-cast.

I love die cast hoops on MOST snare drums, but a few just dont like die cast heavy hoops....like supraphonics that are 5inch deep dont seem sound better, to me, but with a big heavy bastard like that it cant hurt is my guess if it matters.good luck!

I want one. They all sound great but I like the Black Iron specifically -- gorgeous tone no matter what the tuning.

Exactly! You can try to make a Keplinger sound bad, but it's not possible.
