Yes I use it, but expect life of hdd reduced over time. I have turned auto sleep on in wd windows app before connecting to router so when not in use it does not move the mechanical parts but is online and resumes whenever I want to read or write something.
I've been readysharing a 128GB USB drive on my Netgear R6050 AC750 router for years, and find that feature so useful that I don't want to be without it! But, it's so difficult to configure SMB1 sharing on modern Linux operating systems, I'm willing to buy a newer GB router (preferably with USB3) that supports SMB2 or SMB3. Do these things even exist? Official router specifications never indicate which versions of Samba are supported. Not in the specifications given on Amazon. Not in the specifications given anywhere else I've looked. Have you come across any modern routers that support SMB2 or SMB3? Thanks!
Yes it is so underrated useful feature that most brands skip. My netgear router actually dies and my new ISP Jio provided its own premium dual band dual core WiFi6 Router which also has USB 3.1 port but sadly its useless and it doesn’t have any File Sharing Server capabilities. I have seen brands like Netgear, TP Link has those features only. If I came across any such option then I will share.
If I do this in my small office of 20-30 persons, will there be speed issue in terms of uploading and downloading files in the HDD attached to the Router ?
Hi for some reason my HDD does not show up in the folders. What should I do when it does not show up? I have it plugged in and I tried 2 different HDDs already. Thanks in advance for your help.
Have you configured in Netgear Web UI on routerlogin.net/index.htm ? If still not working try reformatting HDD with FAT32 or NTFS File system and display auto off from hdd settings.
For that you might need to flash custom Firmware. I cannot recall the name, you need to do bit of research on this as this will also void your warranty.
So the native apple files app is not compatible? Wow that seems silly, I feel that apple has missed the mark there, unless it’s their way to get people to buy their iCloud product. Still sad tho.
Windows 7 SP1 is easy. I don't think you have to do a thing. But with Windows 10, you have to click the magnifying glass icon and search for "Windows Features" aka "Turn Windows features on or off," then turn on "SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support," and click OK. Having done that, the computer will download what it needs, reboot and everything will work exactly as shown in this video.
thats really good feature......thanks for sharing.....keep sharing knowledge👍
Thank you so much. Glad, you liked it.
Can i use external Hard disk 24*7 on router?

Yes it wont be able to handle this much traffic. Ram and CPU on your router is limited , it will slow down with more devices.

Can it be used on TV?
Yes I use to use it with ES File Explorer and Kodi on android TV. But my router dead due to water damage.
But sir I want know can access 4 drive in this router I mean 5 drive in my HDD but here show only 3 drive how can I show 5 drive
It should show all. Make sure folder is not hidden and HDD format is FAT32 not NTFS for max compatibility.
i can't do it. set up usb in my netgear r6300 and when i go on my laptop(windows 10) i cant edit anything, cant delete, move or add files.
It seems to be permission issue. On Router or in your Drive there would be some firewall blocking it.
Thank You
Glad, it was useful.
at least show the tv access for ftp . which application to be used for smart
tv accessing router
Its also ES File Explorer on TV.
Can I keep my python application and make it run inside this router?

I can access my server from my iPad but I only have read only permission
Try different file explorer, that could be an issue. Hope in netgear ready server settings you have both read and write checked ✅.
