I really need to work on not pulling away when they do those warning nips. They've never broken skin but I did have one come at me kind of hard one day but usually they're fine. Another channel showed her using an empty spoon to help them realize there's not always food so I've been trying that but this has been immensely helpful! Ty
When I adopted my one year old rat Coco she was very cage agressive. She would attack my hand just for moving something in the cage. I worked with her and she learned my hand was more for play rather than a threat. Now my kids can put there fingers by the cage with no problems and she is the sweetest rat.
I just got 2 more rats from a lady who was selling her cage and giving the rats away (her daughter's really). They are underweight and so skittish but I put them with my rat Teddy and they are now taking food from me and coming to me when they seem me, albeit still very cautious. This video series helps ton!
Is it possible that you turn on community-contributed subtitles? I'd love to help adding Spanish subtitles for the on growing Spanish and non-English speaking rat lover community. Thanks!
I've had a look. I think this is going to have to wait until I can get on a computer. I'm off on holiday at the moment so only got access to my phone and can't find any useful settings on the app or browser view. I'll have a go when I'm back
Thanks for this. My little Sam will eat off my hands but does NOT want to be touched, and for a while would not leave the cage voluntarily. I've been working with him to get him comfortable on my hands and arms but he's always been a bit nervous. I wish I'd kept working more with him early on, but I think I just got discouraged and gave up and let him be. He and his cage mate were my first rats so I wasn't very confident at all!
I needed this for my Rat Spook. I've had him for about 2 weeks and he still hides away from me. Shadow, who is younger, at least smells or climb on my hand. Ghost runs up my arm the first chance he can.
I tried the playing around in the substrate idea with Loki and Thor.. got a bit too close to Thor and he launched at me and chomped down on my finger. I couldn't follow your advice of not pulling away as instinct had took over and I'd snatched my hand away before I even knew what had happened. They're absolutely fine with me outside of the cage and have never bitten, but they often do warning bites (not really bites but more putting their teeth around my hand to say back off) if I put my hand in the cage. I'll keep working with them though, this video series is super useful ♥️
I need an aggressive rat really to show how you work with them. Bercow is too nice lol. If he's going to be that bad then pop some gloves on in the cage. That way when he bites he doesn't do the same amount of damage and it helps your confidence. Over time you'll be able to take them off
@@IsamuRatCare I'll try that :) thanks! He's a wee sweetheart outside of the cage and so is Loki, they just must be a bit territorial of me invading their space. I'm sure I'll get there eventually ♥️
What's the best gloves to buy. I have a very nervous rat, has bitten me and drew blood. Trying to get them used to me, my fist was relaxed but clenched fist. He bit my knuckle unexpectedly. I was completely still. I'm not sure I could pick him to tell him not to do this as I think he would try to bite again. He's an adoption/ rescue, about 5 months old and hasn't been handled at all I dont think x
I've got two does and have done in cage stuff for the past 2 weeks and it's been working really well, they both have built up a lot of confidence around hands. But one of them is extra confident and tries to 'investigate' the outside and has escaped before. After an hour of sniffing and digging she was temped out by food into a hide I put back in the cage 😂. But now I'm not sure about keeping the door open because she scales it to escape and I'm nervous about grabbing her since I'm less confident? Does anyone have any advice?
For a temporary cage? If so yes, if your thinking as a permanent cage then no it’s too small. However I’ve just uploaded a video on the coco large which is a great size for a group of 2-6/7 ish
For temporary cage with smaller babies sure but I upgraded very quickly to a critter nation and my girls were sooooo much happier. If you're gonna get rats definitely invest in a large cage. They need the stimulation and space to run, jump climb and play
Yes it is. It gives them less places to hide and avoid you. The same goes for limiting the amount of enclosed houses and such. It's a short term thing but a useful tool

It's so rewarding when you get through to a rat and show them that your worth trusting isn't it
@@IsamuRatCare yes it is great!

I will try. I'm a bit useless at RUclips lol so not sure how to turn stuff on. We will see what I can find in the settings

I think I've done this now. Can you test?

You can work with they at any age so definitely worth having a go. Even to get him to the point where he accepts handling even if he doesn’t love it
@@IsamuRatCare That's my goal! I want him to be willing to at least tolerate it. He's getting more comfortable but still a ways to go.

Is possible if I use that cage for 2 females

Is it easier to tame them from a smaller cage like this Alaska? Without too many hammocks and toys in the way. Thanks
