    Every time I watch a video like this - I throw something in the bin and put a pile of things by the front door for donation 😊
    I love seeing the truck full of donations and the one full of trash.
    Greatly reduces the fire hazard risk too.

    Incredible, it is so cozy there now. I would’ve felt relief when I came across some of the paper boxes having nothing in them 😂 this is why I love second hand buying because it can be well kept things that needed a new home to let people have some space back, and I feel less attached to the stuff knowing I’m getting saved money’s worth out of it and it didn’t go to waste. It’s amazing how having a time-frame goal can create the push to get actually more accomplished!

    That's not just a Depression-era mindset. Their grandparents and great-grandparents also hung on to every little thing. Things were used till they fell apart and anything that endured was passed on to their children. They were the original recyclers. The problem isn't the mindset, it's the amount of possessions we have compared to our ancestors. My father's 2nd great grandparents arrived from Ireland with just the clothes on their backs. His grandfather settled in Northern Texas with a rucksack and when he and his wife passed on in the 1940s, their entire household would have fit in one small room. We recently buried his niece, my great-aunt, who lived nearby on a small farm. Her husband died over 30 years ago and they had no children--I was her executor and her household good filled a 1200 Sq foot farmhouse, 2 sheds, a separate garage, and the barn. During the lockdown we tried to help her downsize so she could move to a smaller place near better medical care but it just never happened and we knew she'd die in that house. The estate sale lasted 3 days and there was still a ton of stuff that got donated in the end. If she had 10 kids, I don't think we'd have been able to disperse it all. And its not just an old people thing either--the amount of toys and clothes and knickknacks I see in the households of younger family members is insane. We need a sea change in our culture.

    • @reneeshull
      @reneeshull  Год назад +1

      Texas Red You bring up a thought-provoking perspective on the generational differences in possessions and the need for a cultural shift. It's fascinating to observe how attitudes towards belongings have evolved over time, and your family's experiences highlight the significant changes. Indeed, finding ways to downsize and live with less can be a beneficial change for both individuals and society as a whole. Thank you for watching the video! 😊

    All I do is wonder why they just kept on piling on stuff and keeping the things they marked as donations. And I wonder how big this house must be, seeing all those things and rooms... It must be big! (I live in The Netherlands and in a terraced house from social housing. Our house is fairly small for U.S. standards, but medium sized for our country.)
    I always enjoy watching video's like these. They encourage me to do a bit of decluttering after... (And all those bits add up to a lot of things in the end!)
    Keep up the good work! You're an angel doing this work!

I just know the parents and their family will be so happy with it. God bless you for the gift of yourself to so many! My mom is 85 with a huge five bedroom home and basement like this. She never gets rid of anything and even has grocery receipts, magazines, etc from 50 years ago. I pray she outlives me as the thought of ever having to do puts me right over the edge at the thought of it. She also went through the depression and guessing that’s why

      My mom is also 85 with so much more than this. I have tried to help her go through it. We don’t do a lot at once because it makes her upset and feel bad. I explain that she is welcome to keep anything that is useful or brings her happy thoughts. I try to just get rid of the garbage. If she doesn’t really want to use something but is just keeping it because it’s too good to get rid of, we post it for sale or donate it to someone who needs it. This makes it easier on her, especially if we do it slowly. She keeps all of the greeting cards she received and cuts out obituaries of everyone she knows. She doesn’t want to get rid of them, but she doesn’t ever really look at them. So I took them and put them in binders for her. Now she loves to look at them and think about her family and friends. Sometimes we just need to know why someone is hanging on to stuff that we think is useless, then we can either help them use it or help them let it go in a way they are comfortable with.

    • @reneeshull
      @reneeshull  Год назад +2

      Tammy's Treasures It sounds like you're doing a great job helping your mom with her belongings. Taking a gradual approach and focusing on getting rid of unnecessary items while allowing her to keep what is useful or brings her joy is a thoughtful approach. Selling or donating items she doesn't need but still holds value is a great solution. It is key to understand why someone is holding onto certain items and find a way to either help them use them or let them go in a way they're comfortable with. Your efforts to support your mom's decluttering process while considering her feelings and attachment to things are commendable. Keep up the good work! 🙂
