Call signs date back to the early days of radio. Spanish first authorized radio station was EAJ-1 Radio Barcelona. It is simply known as Radio Barcelona as they dropped the EAJ-1 from their jingles at some point. It's worth noting that American stations not only seem to love their call signs, but also make heavy use of their channel number. With the analog switch off those numbers no longer refer to the actual channel, but stations keep them as their "virtual channel".
