I've been singing this song since 30 years when I was a teenager in USA..it is really "Trotz Teufel, Welt und Höllenpfort",,so don't you worry....just love God with all your heart and of course all those wonderfull harmonies, suspentions, cadences, dialogue and counterpoint...
DIETRICH BUXTEHUDE { BAD OLDESLOE , HOLSTEIN 1637~1707 LUBECK } ~ DAS NEUGEBORENE KINDELEIN { BUXWV 13 } ~.
Sorry guys you should look at the text before stating it wrong. It says: "Trotz Teufel, Welt und Höllenpfort", which meant 'in spite of the devil, the world, and the gates of hell". Small missreadings like this can utterly confuse what is meant ....
it actually says: "Trotz Teufel, Welt und Höllenpfort" which means: "Despite devil, world and gates of hell" It at least says this in my Bärenreiter original text.
that part of this beautiful song disturbs me as a turkish man Trotz [Türken, Papst] und Höllen Pfort, Das Jesulein ist unser Hort! (Despite Turks, the Pope and the gates of hell, little Jesus is our stronghold.) it still does not prevent me to listen it maybe 100 times since yesterday :/
It is meant Ottomans or Ottoman Empire which was conquering South-Eastern Europe at Buxtehude's time and due to uncertain information people in Central and Southern Europe were frightened of being invaded, too. The message means that the renewed (reformed) church is under thread of the old papal church and the other dominant religion. Therefore take the word "Türken" as a mere metaphor.

Greatest danish composer ever.
Well, comparison hard? Carl Nielsen? Niel W. Gade?

I have heard that the composer cam from Buxtehude, a place near to the German city of Hamburg, how can he be Danish?

it actually says: "Trotz Teufel, Welt und Höllenpfort" which means: "Despite devil, world and gates of hell" It at least says this in my Bärenreiter original text.
that part of this beautiful song disturbs me as a turkish man
